Textbook authors told climate change references must be cut to get Florida’s OK
The directive appears similar to requirements the state imposed on math and social studies textbooks said to include “critical race theory” and “social justice” material

Textbook authors were told last month that some references to “climate change” must be removed from science books before they could be accepted for use in Florida’s public schools, according to two of those authors.

A high school biology book also had to add citations to back up statements that “human activity” caused climate change and cut a “political statement” urging governments to take action to stop climate change, said Ken Miller, the co-author of that textbook and a professor emeritus of biology at Brown University.

Both Miller and a second author who asked not to be identified told the Orlando Sentinel they learned of the state-directed changes from their publishers, who received phone calls in June from state officials.

Miller, also president of the board of the National Center for Science Education, said the phrase “climate change” was not removed from his high school biology text, which he assumed happened because climate change is mentioned in Florida’s academic standards for biology courses.

But according to his publisher, a 90-page section on climate change was removed from its high school chemistry textbook and the phrase was removed from middle school science books, he said.

The other author said he was told Florida wanted publishers to remove “extraneous information” not listed in state standards. “They asked to take out phrases such as climate change,” he added.

Florida officials determined this week that Ron DeSantis wasn’t required to disclose that a donor gifted him a $28,000 golf simulator in 2019, the Tampa Bay Times reported. The decision means the Florida governor has skirted any trouble for the exchange by claiming the simulator, which was installed inside his Tallahassee mansion, was a gift to the state and not to him personally. The state’s commission on ethics, which is led by the wife of DeSantis’ former chief of staff, released a statement Wednesday to announce the ethics complaint was dismissed. That statement said the decision was reached in part because the simulator’s donor, Morteza “Mori” Hosseini, told state investigators it was meant for DeSantis but was also “to be used more broadly by public employees.” Hosseini is the CEO of one of the state’s largest residential home builders and is a key DeSantis ally. He donated over $1 million to DeSantis’ super PAC before DeSantis crashed out of the presidential race in January, the Times reported.

In the end, it wasn’t culture war feuding over restricting LGBTQ+ rights, thwarting Black voters or vilifying immigrants that finally broke Republicans’ DeSantis fever in Florida.

Nor was it his rightwing takeover of higher education, the banning of books from school libraries, his restriction of drag shows, or passive assent of neo-Nazis parading outside Disney World waving flags bearing the extremist governor’s name that caused them to finally stand up to him.

It was, instead, a love of vulnerable Florida scrub jays; a passion to preserve threatened gopher tortoises; and above all a unanimous desire to speak up for nature in defiance of Ron DeSantis’s mind-boggling plan to pave over thousands of unspoiled acres at nine state parks and erect 350-room hotels, golf courses and pickleball courts.

The outcry when DeSantis’s department of environmental protection (DEP) unveiled its absurdly named Great Outdoors Initiative last week was immediate, overwhelming and unprecedented. The Republican Florida senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott penned a joint letter slamming an “absolutely ridiculous” proposal to build a golf course at Jonathan Dickinson state park in Martin county. The Republican congressman Brian Mast, usually a reliable DeSantis ally, said it would happen “over my dead body”.
