Iceland's Blue Lagoon evacuated as volcano erupts

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c844em2ey7eo
Another volcanic eruption has begun in south-west Iceland, forcing the evacuation of the famous geothermal Blue Lagoon spa and the small fishing town of Grindavik.

The new fissure opened up near Sundhnuksgigar on the Reykjanes peninsula, the fifth eruption in the area since December.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) said the fissure was longer than 2.5km (1.5 miles) and was continuing to grow.

Footage from the site shows a wall of molten rock shooting up to a height of 50m, and huge plumes of ash covering most of the sky.

Officials also reported "intense earthquake activity" prior to Wednesday's eruption.

A state of emergency has been declared - a step that has been taken following all recent eruptions.

According to state broadcaster RUV, power had been cut off to the largely abandoned town of Grindavik to protect a high-voltage line that was at risk.
The nearby Svartsengi power plant, which provides electricity and water to thousands of people on the peninsula, has also been evacuated.

Barriers have been built up around the facility, as well as Grindavik and the Blue Lagoon, to try to protect them from magma flows caused by the ongoing eruptions.

I’m back in the states right now, but drove by this on the way to the airport in Reykjavik. You could see the new crater and steam rising above it, even in the daylight. (Come to think of it, I haven’t seen darkness in more than a week.)

That’s a good video. It was kind of sobering to drive by that yesterday.

Kyushu escapes major damage from magnitude 7.1 earthquake

By Francis Tang Staff writer
Aug 9, 2024

The Kyushu region appeared to have escaped major damage after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture on Thursday, causing a small number of injuries and triggering a first-ever alert over the risk of a megaquake along the Nankai Trough.

The injury tally from the Fire and Disaster Management Agency totaled 13 as of 8:30 a.m. Friday, including one person who had fallen unconscious. Three residential buildings, all located in Kagoshima Prefecture, suffered damage, with one totally collapsed, the agency said.

The quake, which registered a lower 6 on the seven-point Japanese seismic intensity scale, occurred at 4:43 p.m. at a depth of 30 kilometers, with its epicenter in the Hyuganada sea off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture. The Meteorological Agency initially issued a tsunami advisory for parts of Kyushu and Shikoku, but only small waves were recorded, and the alert was lifted by 10 p.m.

Earthquake strikes off Japan’s coast and triggers tsunami warning

No immediate signs of damage reported after powerful quake hits off eastern coast of Kyushu

Associated Press

First published on Thu 8 Aug 2024 10.54 CEST

A powerful earthquake struck off Japan’s southern coast on Thursday, triggering a tsunami advisory, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said, but there were no immediate signs of major damage.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake registered a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 and was centred off the eastern coast of Japan’s southern main island of Kyushu at a depth of about 30km (18.6 miles).

The agency said tsunami waves of up 50 centimetres (1.6ft) were detected along parts of Kyushu’s southern coast and the nearby island of Shikoku about half an hour after the quake struck.

The quake most strongly shook Nichinan city and nearby areas in Miyazaki prefecture on Kyushu.

Seismologists were holding an emergency meeting to analyse whether the quake had affected the nearby Nankai trough, the source of past devastating earthquakes.

Operators of nuclear plants on Kyushu and Shikoku said they were checking to see if there was any damage to them. Earthquakes in areas with nuclear power plants have been a major concern since a massive earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 triggered the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

Japan’s NHK public television said there were reports of broken windows at the Miyazaki airport near the epicentre.

Japan warns of heightened risk of megaquake

Shaimaa Khalil BBC News Reporting from Japan
Flora Drury BBC News Reporting from London

Japan has - for the first time - issued a warning about an increased risk of a "major earthquake" striking in the near future.

The advisory was issued on Thursday night local time, telling people to be alert but not to evacuate. It also stressed that the warning did not mean a large earthquake was imminent, but that the probability was higher than usual.

It came hours after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake occurred off the southern island of Kyushu, which reportedly caused no major damage.

But experts were put on heightened alert because of where the epicentre sat - at the edge of the Nankai Trough, an area of seismic activity which stretches along Japan's Pacific coast.

 Yes. I enjoy Willsey, I have two Iceland windows open because I also love this guy who does the drones. He's lost a couple of them in the past, but he just goes and buys a new one and gets right back out there.
