Naiyozcsia Thomason, who owns Mz. Jade’s Soul Food, saw the post and paid off the negative lunch balances so that all of the children could have ice cream.
Mike Rowling, with MSR Transportation LLC, also donated $5,000 so that lunch balances would remain caught up.
We need more people like Ms. Naiyozcsia and Mr. Mike in the world.

Outside speakers and honorees released from attending given ‘highly publicized circumstances’ over main-stage commencement program
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/worl ... 31986.html
The University of Southern California has scrapped commencement speeches by Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M Chu and other honorees amid an uproar over the cancellation of a graduation speech by pro-Palestinian valedictorian Asna Tabassum.
On Friday (19 April), USC announced the decision in a letter posted to the university’s website.
That update came as a follow-up to an announcement earlier in the week calling off Ms Tabassum’s speech over a growing furore relating to the war in Gaza that had drawn in “many voices outside of USC” and had “escalated to the point of creating substantial risks relating to security and disruption”.
“We cannot ignore the fact that similar risks have led to harassment and even violence at other campuses,” the statement continued.
“As always, and particularly when tensions are running so high across the world, we must prioritize the safety of our community.”
Friday’s letter states that “given the highly publicized circumstances surrounding our main-stage commencement program” it was decided to “release our outside speakers and honorees from attending this year’s ceremony”.
It continued: “We’ve been talking to this exceptional group and hope to confer these honorary degrees at a future commencement or other academic ceremonies.”
Chu, a USC alumnus, was scheduled to deliver the school’s commencement speech at the main ceremony on 10 May in front of approximately 65,000 attendees.
In addition to Crazy Rich Asians, Chu has directed and produced a wide range of movies, notably In the Heights and the highly anticipated movie adaptation of the musical Wicked.
Also scheduled to attend and receive honorary degrees were tennis legend Billie Jean King, National Endowment for the Arts Chair Maria Rosario Jackson, and National Academy of Sciences President Marcia McNutt.

Big Episcopal churches, and particularly cathedrals, used to have mid-week services, usually quiet and low-key. I believe that such services have become less common since Covid.
When I was at a cathedral choir school we had three services a day Monday-through Friday: morning prayer, communion at noon, and evensong. We only sang at evensong.
The cathedral currently has weekday communion at noon, but morning and evening prayer have gone online.
The big NYC congregation I belonged to and (briefly) sang at a decade or so ago now has an 8:00 am communion service on Wednesdays. Three services on Sundays.

Many decades ago ago my brother brought home from a used book store a tattered copy of a volume that struck us as slightly comical and somewhat deranged (we were young): Building Up the Mid-week Service, by William Le Roy Stidger (1885-1949), a prominent minister of the Methodist-Episcopal church. Stidger was described in a recent biography as “Evangelism's First Modern Media Star."

To say that the prayer meeting is dead would be a gratuitous piece of generalization to which we do not commit ourselves. It is far better to maintain the judicial attitude of the French minister at the English court, who reported to his government: Some say that the Pretender is dead; some say that he is not. For myself I believe neither story. The church is not nearly so much interested in Inquest as she is in Conquest. How to make all her forces into full strength regiments in the march and battle of the Kingdom is her first concern. Her command to each is Eyes front!

Actually, I'd love to see an impeccably credentialed WIccan (someone with an actual degree or certificate from one of the few established neo-pagan seminaries, just to have all the Is dotted and Ts crossed) set up an outdoor nature worship sanctuary, where the cycle of life is taught through life lessons, explorations, and services. You know, just wander the grounds enjoying the old swimming hole, or the flower garden, and discussing the journey of life.
Let's see what happens.

A few Anglo-Catholic parishes in Chicago do a daily Eucharist and may also have morning prayer and a weekly Evensong. Obviously city churches with bigger staffs can run morning prayer since it will often be attended by at least the staff. Sometimes the weekly Eucharist services in cities is around noon allowing some to attend during their lunch break.chancery wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2024 3:20 pm Big Episcopal churches, and particularly cathedrals, used to have mid-week services, usually quiet and low-key. My parish does a weekday Eucharist during Advent and Lent (some years ago they did it in other seasons but attendance was shrinking among the retiree population). We will sometimes have a morning prayer once a week on Zoom only, if somebody wants to run it.
During choir season, there is usually a spoken Compline service at the end of rehearsal which, while not advertised, is an official public service and would welcome others if they attended. We have sung it from time to time.
One reason cathedrals tend to run daily services, sometimes both daily offices (morning and evening prayer), even for a very small group, is how they see the place of that type of service. Whereas a parish prayer service is a liturgy of the local community, which is usually a Sunday-only thing, Cathedrals represent the entire diocese with continuous prayer and not just a Sunday service of the local community.

CALL TO ACTIVISM @CalltoActivism wrote: THIS MOM MEANS BUSINESS:
Holy shit: A mom stood up at her school board meeting and delivered an AMAZING speech expressing frustration that conservative extremists were interfering with her child’s education.
Adrienne Martin of Granbury, Texas, boldly confronted the school board and held nothing back:
Here is what Adrienne Martin told her school board:
"I do not want random people with no education background or experience determining what books my child can read, what curriculum they learn, and what clubs they can join.
Just because you can get up at every meeting and rant and rave does not give you authority over my child's education.
Your personal religious beliefs- people in this room and on this board- should not be affecting my child's education either. Our schools are not to be used for personal political agendas.
And our children are here for education, not religious indoctrination.
I implore the board to put an end to trying to appease these extremists. Focus on retaining staff, providing excellent public education, and a safe and welcoming learning space for all students.
The speakers speaking about what great Christians they are... Great! Go tell your pastor. Our schools are not your church.
Thank you."

Thank you to this BRAVE mom for speaking out!

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — The Oklahoma State Department of Education is mandating public school teachers use the Bible in classrooms.
The public school superintendents were sent a memo on Thursday announcing the new rule.
“The Bible is an indispensable historical and cultural touchstone,” said State Superintendent Ryan Walters. “Without basic knowledge of it, Oklahoma students are unable to properly contextualize the foundation of our nation which is why Oklahoma educational standards provide for its instruction. This is not merely an educational directive but a crucial step in ensuring our students grasp the core values and historical context of our country.”

Tuttle Twins books, which push libertarian and anti-woke messages on kids, now sit in the libraries of 29 Scottsdale schools.
A book for elementary school students calls social safety net programs a form of government control. Another “shows how things begin falling apart when socialism creeps in.” And one for middle and high schoolers about “true conspiracies” includes a chapter about Hunter Biden’s laptop.
They’re the Tuttle Twins books, a series of illustrated tales that purports to help “freedom-loving parents” who “have been at the mercy of professional curriculum developers” by teaching right-wing, free-market principles to school children. Written by Connor Boyack, the president of the libertarian think tank the Libertas Institute, they’ve been called the “conservative answer to ‘Sesame Street.’”
“Libertarian Cartoons Promise to Turn Your Kids Into Little Ayn Rands,” blared the headline of a 2022 Bloomberg article.
Now, Tuttle Twins books can be found in the libraries of the Scottsdale Unified School District.

Texas middle school cheerleaders suffer first and second degree burns after ‘punishment’ from coach
Julianna Washburn
Sat, October 12, 2024 at 6:23 PM GMT+2
LUBBOCK, Texas — Thirteen cheerleaders at Evans Middle School in Lubbock, Texas are suffering from first and second-degree burns on their hands after they said their cheer coach made them perform “bear crawls” and “crab walks” on a hot outdoor track as punishment.
The girls, who are all eighth graders and on the “red” team for the squad, told EverythingLubbock.com they were punished for performing a cheer at a football game that she didn’t want them to do. They said the coach found it “disrespectful.”
What came next for the parents and the kids was a nightmare.
“I had asked [my daughter], ‘Are you okay? How was school?’ She put our stuff down in the car, went to sit down and said, ‘Mom, you want to know how my day was in cheer?’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ She told me that they got a punishment, and shows me her hands,” Angel Thompson, a mom of an Evans Middle School cheerleader said.
