Didn't know where to put this but this is huge.

FTC ruled to ban non-compete agreements for non-executives. This is pretty big in my industry. I've been hamstrung at times with going to competitors and usually had to wait out clauses in order to move on in my career.

Hopefully Michael Che hits him hard next weekend. I can see how the weekend update format wouldn’t translate well to an MC gig.

But I bet he was still better than Rich Little, who got the gig after Stephen Colbert humiliated all the conservatives that were stupid enough to believe he was one of them.

Biden: what would Trump have done if the Capitol riots had been led by Black Americans?
The US president Joe Biden asks at civil rights event: ‘what do you think he would have done … if Black Americans had stormed the Capitol?’

David Smith in Detroit
Mon 20 May 2024 07.44 CEST

Joe Biden has launched one of his most scathing attacks yet on Donald Trump’s record of racism, suggesting that the former US president would have acted differently to the January 6 2021 insurrection if it was led by Black people.

The remarks, at a dinner hosted by a civil rights organisation in a critical swing state, pointed to an intensifying battle between Biden and Trump for African American voters ahead of November’s presidential election.

“Let me ask you,” Biden said during an address to an NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) dinner in Detroit. “What do you think he would have done on January 6 if Black Americans had stormed the Capitol?”

There was a collective gasp and murmur in the cavernous convention centre, where an estimated 5,000 guests had gathered. The president insisted: “No, I’m serious. What do you think? I can only imagine.”

Ohio Moving to Exclude Biden from Ballot
This is heading for the courts.

In 2010, the Ohio legislature passed a law creating an arbitrary deadline that candidates for each political party must be nominated 90 days before the election to get on the ballot. That provision has never been enforced to keep a candidate off the ballot - until now.

Both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions took place after the 90 day Ohio deadline in 2012 and 2020. Both times the legislature passed a bill to extend the deadline so there were no issues. However, 2024 is the first time that only one party has their nominating convention after the deadline, and it just happens to be the Democrats which will nominate Biden on August 22, two weeks after Ohio's arbitrary deadline.

The Republican supermajority was asked again, just like in 2012 and 2020, to extend the deadline so there will not be an issue. They have refused to do so. Now, Republican Secretary of State Frank LaRose has just send a letter to the Chair of the Ohio Democratic Party stating that he does not believe the legislature is going to grant an extension so the DNC is going to be forced to either change the date of their nominating convention to satisfy Ohio Republicans, or take them to court.

The convention can't be changed. So are they going to court?

Geez, Alabama had the same issue and even they did the right thing.

A variant on changing the date of the nomination convention would be for the DNC to change the nomination process. I.e., rewrite the rules so there's a pre-deadline nomination (held by mail, etc.), and the show convention could still continue as planned.

DNC prepares to nominate Biden via ‘virtual roll call’ before convention
The Democratic National Committee is preparing to nominate President Biden as the party’s presidential nominee through a “virtual roll call” ahead of its August convention in Chicago, an unusual step to ensure that Biden can meet a deadline to appear on the ballot in Ohio.

The move comes despite a special legislative session in Ohio this week that Gov. Mike DeWine (R) said would resolve the issue. Democrats are not optimistic about the special session, given that DeWine has added an unrelated proposal on campaign finance to the agenda that Republicans want considered alongside legislation that would allow Biden on the ballot.

“Joe Biden will be on the ballot in Ohio and all 50 states, and Ohio Republicans agree,” Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison said in a statement. “But when the time has come for action, they have failed to act every time, so Democrats will land this plane on our own.”

A virtual roll call, Harrison added, will ensure that the GOP “can’t chip away at our democracy through incompetence or partisan tricks.”

The exact timing of the virtual roll call remains to be seen, but party officials emphasized it will be before Ohio’s Aug. 7 ballot certification deadline. The DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee is set to meet June 4 to vote on a resolution to clear the way for the virtual event. If approved, the resolution will then need approval from the full DNC.

It would not be the first time Democrats finalized their presidential nominee virtually. In 2020, during the coronavirus pandemic, the Democratic National Convention was conducted almost entirely remotely, with the roll call featuring prerecorded messages and live shots from across the country.

Given how the Overton Window tends to move on this sort of thing, and with surprising swiftness, I am assuming that by 2028, either virtual roll calls will be normalized, *or* schedules of all states' ballot deadlines will be compared to schedules of nominating conventions so that this doesn't happen again.

But I can also see cynical arguments about why I'm wrong and how the controversy is helpful to drive news cycles so ad hoc solutions every 4 years that allow for complaining about the process is also a thing.

I agree. I'm not a football fan, either, but a politician should know better than to insult a sport that regularly draws enormous TV ratings. That means that a hell of a lot of people, most of whom are voters, does not find football boring. Every year, the Super Bowl draws the highest ratings of any TV show, scripted or unscripted.

You're also right that he is probably still smarting from the CFL debacle, in which he almost single-handedly killed the league.
