The book I'm reading involves a farmer from Iowa who refers to horses as "tractors with an opinion".

My father-in-law was born in Iowa in 1915 and, growing up, used horses to plow. I know from my husband’s stories that dear FIL was NOT a fan of uncooperative horses! Maybe one reason why FIL became a tractor mechanic rather than a farmer. Tractors don’t have opinions, and FIL was a magician at fixing them.

I remember little about Sugar, my grandfather's horse. I do, however, remember the tractor well. It had a very even temperament with a calm personality. I rode both, but Sugar was gone before I could remember much about him/her.

When I was last out by our family's former land a couple of years ago, the guy farming most of the land around there now explained to me all the technology now involved in the equipment (and how big they've become). With AI, the "tractors" will now also have an opinion (and AC).

I was a boy, riding in the Sierra Nevada with my dad and about twenty others, when one of the horses further up the trail suddenly bolted and turned around, and somehow he came down the trail at great speed, and hit my horse, spilling me from the saddle.

I was knocked out. Buh bye, cruel world.

And probably had a concussion, but there were no medical professionals on the ride, so they gave my horse to the guy whose horse had bolted (his horse returned to the stable, mine stuck around), and I had to ride double, since I was smaller, all the way back to camp.

Only time in my whole life I got completely konked out.

I fainted once, too also, but nothing to do with horsies.
