In addition to the other responses : one thing to keep in mind is that 'assault weapon' isn't, well, really a technical thing. It is more of a marketing term and aesthetic, and one of the big appeals is the message it sends to your own community about the brands and group affiliation the symbol brings with it. Before the famed 'assault weapon ban' of the 80s, the market for things like the AR-15 was pretty small because, well, people didn't really want them. But after that, they became a symbol, and buying symbols means telling people who you are.

That being said, I have heard they are pretty good for medium sized game like pigs, which have become an invasive species in parts of the US and thus farmers actually do make use of them. Which kinda makes sense since pigs often make good human analogs, so makes sense that weapons designed for killing humans would also work really well on pigs.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WWSB/Gray News) - An 11-year-old boy in Florida was accidentally shot and killed by his older brother on Friday, according to authorities.

St. Petersburg Police said Amir Williams was at home with his two siblings, aged 13 and 14, when the shooting happened.

The 14-year-old allegedly told police that he accidentally shot Williams while playing with the gun, WWSB reported.

The gun was reported stolen on April 24.

As of now, detectives are still trying to determine how the 14-year-old had possession of it.

This is an ongoing investigation and no one has been charged at this time.

Hmmm… let’s see… one possibility..
Child steals gun*
Child shoots sibling
Child claims it was an accident
No charges laid…
(So far)

* after breaking into both the gun safe and ammo safe as no responsible gun owner wouldn’t have it stored otherwise.. oh wait..

Pretty sure the no permit law doesn't apply to 16 year olds.

I checked Florida law and similar to Rittenhouse’s exception it would appear (790.22(3)a) that 16 year olds are cool as long as they are “legally hunting”. FWIW.

Two dead, four injured during officer involved shooting at Market Square[/b wrote:
Fiesta celebrations came to a violent end late Saturday night.

It was just after midnight when San Antonio Police Chief William McManus says two men opened fire on each other in Market Square. One died. Officers returned fire on the other suspect, killing him.

According to SAPD, officers patrolling near the stage at Conch Alley heard gunfire and witnessed an 18-year-old fleeing the scene. Two officers pursued the 18-year-old, who allegedly turned and fired a handgun at a 20-year-old man, striking him. The officers returned fire, striking the 18-year-old.

Police say the 18-year-old was pronounced dead on the scene and the 20-year-old was transported to the hospital where he died.

“We have a very busy crime scene here. We had two individuals open fire on each other right in the middle of Margarita Alley," explained Chief McManus. "So two individuals that were shooting at each other. One is dead on the scene. The other was transported to the hospital, and he was just pronounced dead."

McManus says four innocent bystanders were shot as well. Two were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The other two were treated at the scene.

Charlotte shooting latest: Suspect named as Terry Clark Hughes after four officers killed in shootout identified

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/worl ... 37199.html
Four officers were killed and four others injured in a gun battle as they served a fugitive arrest warrant at a house in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The fugitive, who opened fire on officers, was himself fatally shot during the gunfight, and two other suspects were arrested after an ensuing standoff on Monday, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD).

Authorities identified the suspect as 39-year-old Terry Clark Hughes Jr.

He was wanted for possession of a firearm by felon and felony flee to elude out of Lincoln County, North Carolina, police wrote.

“The preliminary investigation indicates officers were attempting to serve active felony warrants on a male subject,” the CMPD said.

Three officers of the slain officers were members of the US Marshals Fugitive Task Force. Two officers — Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott — worked for the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction and one unnamed officer was a deputy US marshal, according to the US Justice Department.

CMPD officer and 6-year veteran Joshua Eyer was also killed in the tragedy.

14-year-old suspect dead after active shooter reported outside Wisconsin middle school: Sources
The individual did not breach the school entryway, the district said.

A 14-year-old suspect is dead following a confrontation with police Wednesday after an active shooter was reported outside a Wisconsin middle school, sources told ABC News.

The teen had approached Mount Horeb Middle School with what appeared to be a long gun, the sources said.

A vehicle associated with the suspect is being searched for evidence by bomb technicians, according to sources.

The Mount Horeb Area School District said police responded to help "scope out" an active shooter at the school.

The threat was "neutralized" outside the building and no injuries have been reported "with the exception of the alleged assailant," the district said.

"The individual did not breach [the] entryway," the district said on Facebook.

"The threat was 'neutralized'" - the threat was a 14yo boy. And he was killed.

This language disturbs me.

Therein lies one of the sadnesses of American life: perhaps this argument could happen anywhere, and anybody in any country can lose their temper, and some will will progress to violent intentions or actual violence.

But because guns are accessible, instead of a fist fight, a complaint to authorities, a dogshit-related prank or, an attack with a knife, not only are two people dead and their family traumatized but the perpetrator has ruined his own life.

He has killed two people and he didn't even win the argument because he won't be going home again to stress about property boundaries.

I don't know anything about the killer, but it's quite possible that absent guns he would have led a full and productive (if occasionally angry) life. The availability of guns took that away from him. So many victims.

Florida deputies who fatally shot US airman burst into wrong apartment, attorney says

Deputies responding to a disturbance call at a Florida apartment complex burst into the wrong unit and fatally shot a Black U.S. Air Force airman who was home alone when they saw he was armed with a gun, an attorney for the man’s family said Wednesday.

Senior Airman Roger Fortson, 23, who was based at the Special Operations Wing at Hurlburt Field, was in his off-base apartment in Fort Walton Beach when the shooting happened on May 3.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump said in a statement that Fortson was on a Facetime call with a woman at the time of the encounter.

According to Crump, the woman, whom Crump didn’t identify, said Fortson was alone in his apartment when he heard a knock at the door. He asked who was there but didn’t get a response. A few minutes later, Fortson heard a louder knock but didn’t see anyone when he looked through the peephole, Crump said, citing the woman’s account.

The woman said Fortson was concerned and went to retrieve his gun, which Crump said was legally owned.

As Fortson walked back through his living room, deputies burst through the door, saw that Fortson was armed and shot him six times
, according to Crump’s statement. The woman said Fortson was on the ground, saying, “I can’t breathe,” after he was shot, Crump said.

Fortson died at a hospital, officials said. The deputy involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
