Thanks, we did see it. Good explanation of what it was. I didn’t know what it was at the time.Mrich wrote: ↑Tue Apr 09, 2024 9:07 pm The red dot at the bottom of the total eclipse that some of us saw is explained here (the 2nd video on the page):

It's called a solar prominence, and it's unusual to see one during an eclipse. So those of us that saw it got a bonus!

In 2017, Numbah One Son and I drove down to South Carolina to see the totality, standing on the shore of a beautiful lake in a state park.
That was my second total eclipse, so I just couldn't get too excited about this one.
But Numbah Two Son went up to Ohio with a couple of homies to see the totality. He's back in Wilmington now. He had a blast.

We had a great time at my twin’s Eclipse Champagne Brunch party. Perfect spot to watch - top of a mountain in western Little Rock. We won’t have as good a view for the next eclipse because the tree foliage will block the sun.

I bought eclipse glasses in the hope that I would be able to see our 75% coverage. However, with the cloud coverage, I couldn't even tell where the sun was in the sky.
So I thought it was great when I found that I can donate my eclipse glasses to Warby Parker -

In addition to distributing free, ISO-certified solar eclipse glasses at our stores (of which we are completely out of stock), we’re thrilled to partner with Astronomers Without Borders (AWB), a non-profit organization that builds community through astronomy.
To help AWB achieve their goal of cultivating a diverse, international community that engages astronomy enthusiasts and educators, we're providing a financial contribution to the organization. We’ll also collect gently-used solar eclipse glasses on AWB's behalf following the solar eclipse on April 8!
To donate your solar eclipse glasses, please bring them to any Warby Parker retail location any time before April 30. We’ll send all donated eclipse glasses to AWB, who will distribute them to educators and students around the world.
Not near one of our stores? No problem. Astronomers Without Borders lists a few additional donation spots here!

Great photos!
Meanwhile, in the bifurcated world I live in where my family is based in reality and our environment is maga/christian nationalists/2a folks: Dr Rolodex took a few pairs of glasses to the office. The staff all went out to look at the eclipse. Patients in the waiting room were invited to come, too, but they said NO it's dangerous to be outside during an eclipse.

I assume they don't go out after sunset either when the earth, instead of the moon, is blocking the sun.

Bama gonna bama. Makes me wonder why they're at a doctor's office. Just go out in a full moon, catch a frog, put it in a jar, pray and voila your wart will just fall off.MN-Skeptic wrote: ↑Wed Apr 10, 2024 1:21 pmI assume they don't go out after sunset either when the earth, instead of the moon, is blocking the sun.

The day after my 100th birthday there will be a total eclipse viewable in the city in which I was born. I plan to watch.

I looked to see if there was a total solar eclipse in the future near the Twin Cities.
It turns out that there is one in the future which will be directly over the Twin Cities!
In 2099. Sigh.
However, my niece gave birth to twin daughters in St. Paul last week. They'll be 75 in 2099. I like to think that they'll view it.

Yesterday NPR's "All Things Considered" interviewed a biologist that did a study of how animals at the Fort Worth zoo reacted during the eclipse:
It's a 4 minutes listen, or you can just read the transcript. I thought the bit about the tortoises was interesting!

There's an annoying FaceBook page, also annoying because it's extremely popular, that hoovers up "greatest hits" astronomy photos from NASA and similar sources, including the work of expert amateur image processors, and republishes them without the real source credits as "Marvels From The James Webb Space Telescope."Walt Tuttle wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2024 6:32 pm Not really from the James Webb. Think about it. Why would an eclipse happening in Texas also align with something in orbit well beyond the Earth?
