These days you often hear reporters and commentators saying matter of factly that legislation requires 60 votes in the Senate. This is truly McConnell’s greatest accomplishment. People say this like it’s in the Constitution, like the two-thirds requirement for conviction at impeachment or to approve a treaty. But it is a novel development and it has radically altered U.S. politics. It transforms the federal Senate into a genuinely Calhounian body in which minority factions exercise a de facto and permanent veto over the majority.

It’s what creates gridlock, the breeding ground of political disaffection and extremism.

It also lays the groundwork for McConnell’s other great accomplishment, the corrupted federal judiciary and especially the corrupt Supreme Court. By throwing a wrench into the engine of legislation you create a vacuum that is inevitably filled by an increasingly activist judiciary. They are the yin and yang of today’s federal government, a broken legislative branch whose vacuum is filled by a right-wing activist federal judiciary. Thus McConnell’s only affirmative goal as Senate leader: the confirmation of right wing judges, who in this system amounted to the appointment of a permanent Republicanized federal legislature

The irony of McConnnell’s rise and fall is that he is now ushered off the stage by the Trumpian politicos who he is not equal to but whose rise he made possible by breaking the legislative branch..

He, of course, won't be personally affected by any of this insanity, so off he trots to his safe little house and safe little life, never to be affected by the crazy RWNJs or the court he created.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell delivered a scathing assessment of the modern Republican Party in an upcoming biography, saying the “MAGA movement is completely wrong” and that Ronald Reagan “wouldn’t recognize” the party today.

“I think Trump was the biggest factor in changing the Republican Party from what Ronald Reagan viewed and he wouldn’t recognize today,” McConnell told the Associated Press’ Michael Tackett for the upcoming biography “The Price of Power” obtained by CNN ahead of its release.

McConnell added that the former president has “done a lot of damage to our party’s image and our ability to compete.”

In the aftermath of the January 6 attack—in which hundreds of then-President Donald Trump's supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol and interrupted Congress' certification of the 2020 election, then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was tasked with reconvening the chamber to continue its formalities.

As detailed in journalist Michael Tackett's coming biography of McConnell, the Republican leader had known ahead of January 6, 2021, that a handful of conservative lawmakers planned to object to the certification of two critical states—Pennsylvania and Arizona—over baseless claims of voter fraud.

Two Republican senators helped lead the efforts when Congress first convened on January 6: Texas Senator Ted Cruz and Missouri Senator Josh Hawley. But, as Tackett writes in his book, The Price of Power, McConnell was hopeful after returning to the Capitol that the riots would "deter senators" from "going through with their fruitless objections" to President Joe Biden's victory.

"His wish was half granted," Tackett wrote in a copy of the biography obtained by Newsweek. Cruz backed off his plans to object to the electoral votes after the mob ceased. McConnell reportedly told Tackett that Cruz even went out of his way to ask the Republican leader for advice, which came as a bit of a surprise.

"Believe it or not, Ted Cruz, who sort of made a career out of being wherever I'm not on issues, called me up last night to get my advice on how to deal with it all," McConnell told Tackett in a later interview. "That was almost an out of body experience."
