Not really a joke, but…

Jokes
A little boy asks his mother "Mommy, where did I come from?".
With a sigh, the mother calls her husband and, together, they give the boy the whole "Birds and Bees" speech, describing everything completely and accurately.
When they finish, they ask the boy if he has any questions.
"Yeah. That's all good, but where did I come from? My friend Timmy came from Pittsburg".

Jokes
Whenever I go to a new country, I typically memorize a couple of humorous phrases to explain that I'm an American tourist, and I apologize for not speaking their language. My ear is good enough that even if I have no idea what I'm saying, I can sound OK in most Western languages by just saying it phonetically.noblepa wrote: ↑Tue Jan 02, 2024 1:44 pm What do you call someone who speaks two languages? What do you call someone who speaks only one language? An American.
When I went to Italy for the first time in 2022, one of my little speeches was based on the joke above: "I'm sorry that I don't speak Italian. I'm an American tourist and this is my first visit to Italy. Everybody knows that, unlike Europeans, Americans can only speak one language... I think it's some sort of genetic disorder." That usually got a laugh and some kindness.

I grew up with a lot of people who would take exception to that. As in you had better not call them unAmerican because they speak more than one language.noblepa wrote: ↑Tue Jan 02, 2024 1:44 pm What do you call someone who speaks two languages? Bi-Lingual

Jokes
Think about how many Americans are outraged when they hear someone speaking a foreign language near them. Or are outraged that the bank teller or sales clerk is speaking Spanish to the business's customer. While they may have no problem with a blond haired gentleman speaking Norwegian next to them in Minneapolis, they'll be outraged to hear anyone speaking a southeast Asian language in their vicinity.
