The good news is...no surgery yet. Usually, once typhlitis has progressed enough to produce symptoms, the bowel is already perforated and emergency surgery is required but, even then, survival is about 50%. Remember, these are usually leukemia patients with very low immune systems so surgery is a BFD. In Hubs case, I've monitored his temp obsessively since his pneumonia last winter and, once it started rising, refused him Tylenol which would have masked the progression of the disease. So, yay me, I guess.
Hopefully, with the quick response, blood cultures and new antibiotic, he won't need surgery but they'll be monitoring him in the hospital for a few more days, at least.

Thanks all. And he'd been doing so well. They were even going to reevaluate him at Moffitt in September to see if maybe he could be placed on the bone marrow transplant list. Pretty sure that's not gonna happen now.

Hubs is home and doing pretty good. His vitals are stable. His fever is gone. The surgeon said that, as long as he isn't symptomatic, he doesn't need surgery but we need to keep a close eye on him in case they develop. It apparently was a side effect of the chemo and not, as I was concerned, a errant bug that snuck into his system. The surgery is pretty harsh on people with his medical history, only about 50% of them survive, but of the symptomatic patients who don't get timely surgery, none of them survive*, so quick response is the key. I'll keep monitoring his temperature and, if it starts rising again, I'll put his medical team on alert.
He feels so well I practically have to follow him around with a switch, telling him to sit down and rest.
Kudos to his medical team. They done good.

Hay nao, whatever happened to "one foot in front of the other"? (Please pass that along to him, especially if it makes him laugh. )Slim Cognito wrote: ↑Sat Aug 19, 2023 2:17 pm He feels so well I practically have to follow him around with a switch, telling him to sit down and rest.

First, Hubs is doing great!! We head to Moffitt in Tampa later this week and hopefully get some good news and a new treatment plan.
But this post is just me patting myself on the back. I finished training with The Calendar Girls, a (ahem) mature womens' dance troupe here in SWFL that performs in nursing homes, rehab facilities, farmers' markets, etc, and raise money for Southwest Guide Dogs to gift seeing eye dogs for visually impaired vets. (SWGD dogs are available to anyone who needs them, but the seeing eye dogs are VERY expensive, $60K. Also, the puppies who don't quite meet seeing eye dog standards are trained to be [real] service animals.)
Anyhoo, tomorrow I get my costumes. * Here's a pix from recent local ABC7 story featuring TCG to promote the upcoming Pirate Festival.
These women have been lifesavers for me. They're a wonderful sisterhood who made me feel welcome the moment I showed up. I don't know where I'd be in this journey if I didn't have them for support.
*They have a closetful of cool costumes. Hubs told me the only reason I was joining was to dress up. (it's not the only reason.)
