I remember someone told me that women carry things in front and men to the side because women usually have more narrow shoulders and wider hips as compared to men. There is a word for that, but I can't remember it, it's colloquially known as wide, childbearing hips though. It's 'cause women are sometimes built to pass babies through their pelvis and men aren't.
