"Greater Idaho"? Stupid or Idiotic?
So a bunch of right wing cranks came up with a brilliant idea (by which I mean Really Freaking Stupid), of having referendums in Eastern Oregon (Phase 1), and later on Southern Oregon and Northern California (Phase 2), and Eastern Washington (Phase 3). Where the people in counties in those states would vote on if they wanted their county to leave their current state and join with the right wing paradise of Idaho to form "Greater Idaho"
Main Website of the Derp
This would be simply pie in the sky....
...except majorities in 11 Oregon Counties have approved the idea. And the State of Idaho's house passed a resolution to "enter talks with Oregon" to admit those counties.
Idaho House passes nonbinding measure calling for formal ‘Greater Idaho’ talks
Greater Idaho movement passes House, heads to Senate
The thing is that the lawmakers in Idaho go on and on about how this would "add resources to Idaho" (to exploit), would increase Idaho's tax revenue, and would drive the "drug problem" farther away from central Oregon. (Oregon has legal cannabis and relatively law laws on other drugs, Idaho does not).
And in phase 2, they would gain coastal ports (Coos Bay and maybe Humboldt Bay), with phase three being major airports and cities (Spokane)
What they FAIL TO EVEN MENTION is why the flaming hell would Oregon (and presumably Washington and California) would even think that just giving Idaho huge chunks of their state was even remotely a good idea. They fail to even think about what would be in it for those states, other than wishful thinking that "heh, we got rid of those damn red counties, let's smoke a bowl".
Besides, "moving the state line" won't solve Idaho's meth problem, and the people in Idaho going to Oregon and Washington pot shops will just go to the new locations. The counties that have voted to leave Oregon take more from the state budget than they contribute, and I suspect many of those who voted for it would be disappointed in the fact that Idaho's social safety net is.....rather less robust. Plus, Oregon has no sales tax. Idaho does. But hey, they could pump their own gas!
It's not even like the US Congressional make up would change, since the reps from those counties are all GOP.
Basically, it's a batch of people who are too damn lazy to sell everything and move to their red state paradise, so they want to move the state to their house, and fuck over all the damn commie pinko liberal antifa types in their counties that voted against it.
The quality of the derp is particularly strong with this one.

It's inbred.

How would this fit in with the "New California" movement...
Thread: "The State of New California" "The 51st State"
They also think Humboldt County would join with them?

I think they saw "bay" and "Northern California leans conservative" and failed to take anything else into account.

I'm not fully up on the county boundaries you are discussing. Would Greater Idaho inculude Corvalis Oredon? If so there is another advantage for Oregon, it would mean that Oregon and Oregon State wouldn't be 'tied' together and Oregon could move to the B1G without pushback from the legislature.
This would mean the implosion of the PAC12(-2) and essentially allow Arizona (and Utah and Colorado) to move to the Big12 (if the B12 would accept ASU too - ensuring ASU would experience humiliating mediocracy for at least the length of the B12 contract) and Cal, Stanford, Idaho State (Pullman) and Idaho State (Corvalis) to go to the West Coast Conference where they really belong.

Stepping aside from this particular argument, it's an intriguing question as to whether boundaries for administrative entities should be drawn to create homogeneity within the region (be it state, county, whatever) or to give a heterogeneous mix of city and country, industrial and rural, high income and low income, etc.
As several have pointed out, a uniformly rural, poor, right-wing region will find itself short of tax income to provide the services that residents will continue to demand. And richer areas might well think "yeah, not our problem."
On the other hand, mixed regions find themselves with these tensions as sub-regions quarrel about funding decisions. But that's life: we're not all the same, not individuals, not families, not populations.

No. Corvallis is on the west side of the Willamette Valley which is in western Oregon. Portland, Salem, Eugene/Springfield, Albany, Corvallis - the major population centers are in the Willamette Valley. Eastern Oregon is mostly desert.
Just some. Humboldt is not one of them. There are many counties north of SF that are very progressive, like Marin, Sonoma, Napa, Solano, my own Sacramento, and more. Some north eastern counties have been talking about forming the State of Jefferson for a long time.John Thomas8 wrote: ↑Fri May 12, 2023 11:14 pm I was under the impression that counties north of San Francisco were hotbeds of reichwing fucktardery.
"California’s rural far north, sometimes styling itself as the “State of Jefferson,” has long viewed itself as a land apart. Its dozen or so counties, mostly north and east of Sacramento, voted for President Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020.
In Shasta, Lassen, Modoc, Siskiyou and other State of Jefferson-friendly counties, more than one in six voters signed the petition to recall Newsom, according to the Secretary of State’s data. And, as The Sacramento Bee and The Los Angeles Times have reported, members of a Shasta County militia have for months been threatening violence over the governor’s pandemic health restrictions. (Those rules, Newsom has said, will end on June 15.)
Last week, in a nonbinding but revealing election, five counties in eastern Oregon endorsed a plan to secede from the liberal-leaning parts of their state and take a chunk of the State of Jefferson with them. The master plan: to become part of Idaho and then add all or parts of Siskiyou, Shasta, Tehama, Del Norte, Modoc and Lassen Counties on the California side of Oregon’s southern border."
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/26/us/c ... ssion.html
Also, Backwards San Bernardino Co. just voted to study secession last year.
"A November ballot measure directing county officials to review how to secure more resources and funding — “up to and including secession from the State of California” — passed with 50.6% of the vote." -LA Times

Bunch of farkin' loonies.

IIRC, part of the danger of the regions of California (rural) wanting to form their own state is that they would then hold essential water resources needed for other areas and have in some forums discussed that they would use this power.

Here's a county map of the US showing percentage of votes for the presidential candidates in the 2020 election.John Thomas8 wrote: ↑Fri May 12, 2023 11:14 pmI was under the impression that counties north of San Francisco were hotbeds of reichwing fucktardery.
As you can see, all of the coastal counties in California voted for Biden with the exception of Del Norte County at the extreme north.

Fortunately, acres don't vote; people do.

Here's the same kind of map, but with the areas resized according to population.
It's a lot bluer.

But still kind of ugly.
Makes the red stuff look like some kind of blood poisoning.

Now do it as Takers versus Makers.
I’m all in on the Truth In Taxing Act. What’s that? I made it up. What it says is that no state can TAKE more in payouts than it MAKES in taxes. Fuck these red states. Implement the Act at a state level for this crap at the county level. Let’s stop subsidizing the hate.

It would be if land voted. But land doesn't vote, people do. And the GOP has long been courting the rural vote
