Trump says the network aims to 'give a voice to all' and 'fight back against big tech'

Former President Donald Trump announced Wednesday the forthcoming "TRUTH Social," a social media network that aims to "stand up to the tyranny of Big Tech." The app, which will begin a beta launch for invited guests in November 2021, is expected to make its full debut within the first quarter of 2022 and is a part of the newly established Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG).

Trump, who will serve as chairman of TMTG, released a statement announcing the planned arrival of the platform and insisted the effort will push back against platforms that lean left and that it will "give a voice to all." "I created TRUTH Social and TMTG to stand up to the tyranny of Big Tech," Trump said. "We live in a world where the Taliban has a huge presence on Twitter, yet your favorite American President has been silenced. This is unacceptable"

"I am excited to send out my first TRUTH on TRUTH Social very soon," Trump added. "TMTG was founded with a mission to give a voice to all. I'm excited to soon begin sharing my thoughts on TRUTH Social and to fight back against Big Tech. Everyone asks me why doesn't someone stand up to Big Tech? Well, we will be soon!"

Shares of the Digital World Acquisition SPAC were trading at $37.22 early Thursday afternoon—more than 270% higher than the price on Wednesday.

Trading was halted at three points on Thursday—once late in the morning when the price was up 111%, again shortly after noon when the price quickly dropped and once more at around 1:15 p.m. after soaring to a new high of up more than 240%.

Digital World Acquisition Corp. was the Fidelity platform’s most actively traded stock on Thursday, with “buy” orders outnumbering “sell” orders nearly three to one.

The company plans to merge with the Trump Media and Technology Group to fund the launch of a new social media platform called "TRUTH Social," which bills itself as a "rival to the liberal media consortium."

The merger will result in the Trump Media and Technology Group becoming a publicly listed company, according to a statement announcing the move.

The statement named Trump as the chairman of the Trump Media and Technology Group.

Huh. I wonder if this is another one of those pressure valves of 'too much money, not enough places to invest it'. With enough investors who have too much cash and not enough get rich quick opportunity, someone is gonna create deals that would appeal to them.

At that kind of share increase, someone has already made a pile of cash off this anncoucement.

The thing about all of this, though, is that when it comes to everyone’s favorite American President, truth is subjective, and “free speech” comes with more than a few caveats. So, too, is the case for Truth Social, the terms of service for which include a clause stating that users may not “disparage, tarnish, or otherwise harm, in our opinion, us and/or the Site.”

In other words, users can’t make fun of or criticize Truth Social, and it’s up to Truth Social to determine what constitutes said “disparagement.”

The section is an early indication that Truth Social might have a little trouble following through on its promise to provide a “Big Tent” utopia of free-flowing social discourse. If it’s not going to permit bashing the platform, what about bashing, or harassing, other users? What about bashing everyone’s favorite American President? Parler — remember Parler? — promised to provide a similar bastion of free speech but then wound up imposing a bunch of restrictions and banning people, including, at one point, its own founder.
