1 9 5 5 – 1 9 6 0 (USA)
206 x 30 minute episodes

Each week, never-seen billionaire John Beresford Tipton (Paul Frees) had his secretary Michael Anthony (Marvin Miller) present a million-dollar cashier’s cheque to an individual.

The drama was provided by the reactions and plans of the recipients.

The only catch for recipients was that they were told never to reveal where they received the money from, nor to search for the donor – or they would forfeit the gift.

Despite disclaimers featured in each segment of the series emphasising that persons and situations featured in the program were fictitious, Millionaire‘s viewers refused to acknowledge that no such man as billionaire philanthropist John Beresford Tipton existed.

This is largely because nobody is buying CDs, not because more people are buying vinyl...

Partially true. Vinyl sales have increased dramatically, but they are still woefully low compared to CDs at their peak.

I remember those days. My employer had multiple task forces working for months to identify and fix every vulnerability in every bit of software especially software critical to operating the plants most of which had been developed in house. News Years Day came, everything worked just fine, thousands of engineers breathed a collective sigh of relief.

Yep.

I still hear that 'You guys lied. Y2K was a fizzer' thing once in a while. I can't be bothered to explain it to them anymore, so now-a-days I just say 'You're welcome'.

Perry Mason Screen Tests!

It is easy to see in the test for the Hamilton Burger role why Executive Producer Gail Patrick Jackson wanted Raymond Burr for Perry Mason. He had to lose weight to try out.

ETA:
"We couldn't afford a big star," Patrick later said.[4] Among the hundreds of actors she saw audition in April 1956 was Raymond Burr,[13]: 61  who initially read for the role of district attorney Hamilton Burger, with Tod Andrews standing in as Mason. Patrick had been impressed with Burr's courtroom performance in the 1951 film A Place in the Sun, and told him he was perfect for the title role in Perry Mason, but at least 60 pounds overweight. Over the next month, Burr went on a crash diet. When he returned, he tested as Perry Mason,[4][c] and was chosen from a field of 50 finalists.[13]: 61  By July 1956, word was out that Burr had the role,[15] and an announcement was made at the beginning of August.[16]
