Re: Meanwhile on the North Fork...........
Volkie, , I so enjoy your North Fork musings. I think I could come blindly there and know where to shop, eat, and probably even recognize folks you write about. This all reminds me of an Andy Griffith episode about a stranger coming to town who knows all about it and it's residents. Suspicions rise and the townspeople want to run him out of town. Turns out his Army buddy was from Mayberry and the stranger read the local newspaper and decided he wanted that to be his hometown. Also, one of my favorite scenes with Barnie.

Yesterday protesters blocked Montauk Highway in Northhampton carrying signs saying "Tax the 1%ers". Six were arrested. The rest of them left when asked to do so by the police.

Mrs.V and I finally got around to putting up the new lights on the upstairs front porch today.
Might have happened earlier but Mrs. V was distracted by her trip to France.

Re: Meanwhile on the North Fork...........
The July 4th week folk have all left so the Circle is very quiet.
Trash pickup is imminent this morning. Good old European American will probably be a little late this morning because people who stayed thru the weekend put their trash out when they left on Sunday or Monday so there's a lot to pickup. We have three trashcans in front of our cottage only one of which is ours.

South Fork
The Long Island Railroad has resumed its summer commuter service to the South Fork. The South Fork is very expensive so most folk who work there can't afford to live there.
The LIRR commuter service takes workers from up Island to stations on the South Fork where they can catch buses to their workplaces all for one low price.

No. Trash pickup is provided by the town. Paid for by property taxes. Doesn't matter how much you put out.

Re: Meanwhile on the North Fork...........
Trash truck finally arrived almost 2 hours later than usual.
I recall decades ago when we had to contract individually with private trash services Mrs. V's parents would take their trash up Island after the weekend and add it to the pile in front of their primary residence.

At Maybelot we have to take the trash to the landfill (2.5 miles away). It’s free for household trash, but you have to pay for construction debris and yard waste. We voluntarily recycle and the landfill makes that easy - they have dumpsters for glass, plastic, aluminum, steel, and cardboard. At home we have separate trash cans for each of those things. We go about once a week; more often if we have a lot of people here and it’s piling up.Volkonski wrote: ↑Tue Jul 12, 2022 10:56 am Trash truck finally arrived almost 2 hours later than usual.

About lawn mower noise — when I was on the board of our HOA I suggested that we require the landscape contractor to use electric tools. I was the only one on the board working from home at the time. I got shot down because of the added cost, and left the board after a few terms. When the pandemic hit and everyone was working from home, *then* the board finally voted to require it.

Re: Meanwhile on the North Fork...........
We pay $4.80 per week, added to our water bill, for trash pick up. No limit on cans or bags and every other second day pick up (ours is Mon and Thur, so every other Thurs for us) they will pick up appliances and furniture and other large items. Our yard trimmings must be bagged and sticks and limbs cut to 3' and bundled no higher than a 4' pile. The only thing they won't pick up is paint and batteries and oil and that sort of thing. If you can put construction debris in a garbage can they'll pick it up. We have a paint recycle drop off and monthly roll off dumpster days for large construction debris and quarterly electronics drop offs. The only thing we pay for is the weekly garbage service and $35 per trailer load if we have to go to the dump.

Windy all day. Not cold but with the wind it feels cool and a flannel shirt feels good now that the sun is below the tree tops.
Rain is forecast overnight.
Tomorrow is cardboard and paper recycling so I am looking out at a pile of Amazon boxes.
There was an unusual lack of lawnmowers today.

Re: Meanwhile on the North Fork...........
Mrs.V's sister who was planning to visit here next week broke her ankle water skiing and is in a large cast.
This means she will miss their youngest brother's funeral.
Seriously, water skiing when you are almost 70?

Here we are under an air quality alert for the next 12 hours. Ozone is the problem.
Medical experts here are advising that people wear masks in indoor public places due to a large increase in Covid cases on Long Island.

Another shark attack reported this morning at a local south shore beach.
I can't recall so many shark incidents over such a short time period in Long Island beaches.

Re: Meanwhile on the North Fork...........
Turns out there were two separate shark attacks at LI beaches yesterday several hours apart. Both were at south shore beaches on the Atlantic Ocean.
Authorities expect more.
So far no sharks have been spotted in the bays between the Forks or off the north shore in the LI Sound.

South Fork
The Shinnecock Canal connects the Great Peconic Bay and Shinnecock Bay. Shinnecock Bay is connected to the Atlantic Ocean by the Shinnecock Inlet which was created by the 1938 Hurricane.
The result of this is that when the tides are going in or out the water flow in the Canal can become very fast. There is a lock in the Canal to raise and lower boats when the current is fast. When the current is flowing fast swimming across it would, I think, be impossible.

Sorry, deleted my humorous post because I didn't think it was funny.
But you make my point.
