This overcast Sunday is a bit warmer than the last 2 days.

Most of this morning a neighbor to the west has been using noisy devices to work on his lawn. Happily he seems to be finished now.

Mrs. V is watching the local Unitarian Universalist service on Zoom. She does not care for the new pianist. He tends to bang the keys loudly. On Zoom she has a volume control. ;)

Minivan warning lights have been showing. The North Fork being the North Fork the soonest I could get an appointment at the dealer was October 12th. At least it will get looked at before we drive back to Texoma.

This past summer was quite dry so this autumn's pumpkins are smaller than usual. This has not stopped local restaurants and breweries from featuring pumpkin and pumpkin spice flavored everything. ;)

Yesterday evening our daughter voice captioned a soccer game. Because the action almost never stops in soccer the only time off she gets is between the halves. Otherwise she has to sneak sips of water between words.

This afternoon she has a race. Should take an hour and a half.

She prefers sports because the pay is better than other events. $35 an hour and if the game gets rained out she still gets paid.

Sometimes she will get paid for a rainout and will be able to pick up another event at the last moment so she gets double pay.

So the next time you watch a live event with CC it could be our daughter creating the real time captions.

With the summer over the Circle is quiet most of the time save for lawnmowers. No kids. No dogs.

So the wild turkeys have returned. At this moment 6 of them are in the Circle.

Forecast here is for Ian's rain to drench us in a few days. We can use the rain and by then the winds won't be very fast nor will there be any significant storm surge.

One more day of highs in the low 70s then autumn will chill us to the bone with highs in the low 60s.

Mrs.V has a final hip surgery doctor visit on November 1st so we will be leaving to return to Texas a week or two later that we had been thinking.

“Lizzo makes history playing 200-year-old crystal flute”:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-63058818

Lizzo made history by becoming the first person to play a 200-year-old crystal flute, once owned by former US President James Madison, during her concert in Washington DC on Tuesday.
The US singer and trained flautist was granted permission by The Library of Congress to play the instrument, which arrived on stage with a police escort.

And one more story about Lizzo and the Library of Congress flutes. (I feel an affinity to Lizzo since I played the flute in high school and Lizzo first made a name for herself here in the Twin Cities.)

Florida and New York have had a close relationship for over 100 years. Many New Yorkers vacation there and retire there.

So our local Oldies station, a number of whose retired employees and former listeners now live in Florida, is reporting about Ian as if it is local news. ;)

Just a bit strange to hear so much storm news on a local station when the weather here is perfect.

Some of those retired DJs I had listened to for years. Hope they will be OK.

All my relatives who ended up in Florida have since passed away.

The County's water emergency has ended not because of rain but because summer people have turned off their sprinkler systems for the winter.

Our daughter heads back to Texas tomorrow. :(

I get to drive her to the airport thru the remnants of Ian. :( :(

This evening she is captioning a high school football game. Originally she was scheduled for a game in North Carolina. However it got a bit rainy there so she is doing a game in Pennsylvania.

It is amusing to hear her repeat the game announcer's words with no emphasis. She does this to help the AI to understand what is being said without fan noise or announcers' accents or excitement varied pronunciations getting in the way.

All the while her fingers dance on the keys correcting the AI's misinterpretations.

She tries to stay only 3 to 5 words behind the live action.

She really earns her $35 an hour.

And she's off.

I must admit that there is no way I could do live captioning.

Hours of uninterrupted concentration. Listening, repeating, reading, correcting all at once. She has 2 computer monitors on.

I tested for a job that was live captioning. I failed miserably. Passed the typing portion with flying colors. If I was able to just listen and type, no problem. But having to speak a few words behind someone.... Nope. Kudos to your daughter. That is talent.

I developed an appreciation for captioning back when I went through a British-show phase. I had a hard time with some of the accents and started using the captioning to help avoid rewinding and watching a scene again. I watched enough Brit shows that it was easier to just leave captioning on all the time. I found that it was also really helpful on American shows because between my husband's tv/music, his chit-chat with my caretaker (who's also his best friend) and the dogs' noises, it cut down on having to rewatch scenes from American shows as well.

I had no idea what it takes to do captioning and am seriously impressed by the skills your daughter and other captioners must have to do it!

This is your intrepid porch reporter braving the remnants of Ian to bring you the latest.

Compared to those directly affected by Ian we are getting off lightly.

Yesterday we had hours of heavy rain and high temperatures in the 50s.

Today it is very windy, gusts to 40 mph. Intermittent rain now and the next 2 days.

Minor coastal flooding with tides 1 to 2 feet above normal. Small craft warning with gusty winds. Not many beachgoers but they should stay out of the water due to rip currents.

Multiple east end fall festivals were cancelled this weekend due to the rain and wind. The North Fork Octoberfest yesterday was forced indoors which meant that there were multiple locations at participating breweries instead of one outdoor venue.

East end traffic has been light this weekend.

The temperature which reached 60F around noon has dropped to 57 and reach into the 40s tonight.

This plus a blustery wind has driven me inside where Mrs.V is preparing the minutes from yesterday's recorder organization meeting.

Her hip continues to improve. More PT tomorrow.

Our daughter, now back in Dallas, captioned a football (soccer) match in Sweden this morning. She reports that the crowd was given to loud union singing (in Swedish of course) which made it hard to understand the English sportscasters.
