A quiet Saturday morning. At least until the lawnmowers start. ;)

A cool front went through last night so the humidity is lower.

Mrs.V has said she wants to give me a haircut today. :? She has an online early music meeting today. Not such if the haircut will be before or after that.

I don't know about up there, V, but if we didn't mow for a few years, you'd need a machete to cut a path to our front door. It would be like the ending of Logan's Run.

The rain which the radio said would end an hour ago continues and the temperature has dropped to 68F.

I have changed into long jeans and a flannel shirt. Mrs. V has put on a jacket.

No need to put ice in my tea this morning. ;)

Fear not, temperatures are forecast to be in the 90s by Friday.

South Fork

Yesterday an eastbound LIRR Montauk Line train struck and killed a person on the South Fork. Few details have been released so far. The passengers were moved into the rear 3 cars which were moved west to the nearest station where they were provided buses to their final destinations.

Texas may be heading back to school but the North Fork is heading into the busiest time of the summer season.

Come this weekend every cottage on the Circle will be occupied.

Fire department carnivals and parades continue every week.

The Riverhead Polish Festival has been canceled for the 3rd year in a row. :( However the Hallockville Museum Farm Harvest Festival is back.

What sorts of things do they polish at the Polish Festival? Furniture? Classic cars? Brass and silver? Oh.... never mind...

Mrs.V's DC cousin's husband returned 2 days ago after extending his stay near DC for a week due to illness. Their daughters, SIL and 2 granddaughters whom were originally expected last week finally arrived late last night again due to illness.

DC cousin's husband is mowing the Circle just now but it is not very noisey since his mower is electric.

European American trash company just picked up today's trash and heavy trash.

Mrs. V and one of her early music buddies will be playing at the local Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on Sunday. Later today she will be heading to Greenport to rehearse.

No Greenport Band concert tonight because of a Shakespeare performance in Mitchell Park.

Mrs. V scheduled for hip surgery in mid September. Our younger daughter will be flying up to help me take care of Mrs. V after the surgery.

This evening is our annual potluck dinner in the Circle.

Mrs. V and some of her cousins are already arranging tables in the Circle.

Mrs. V made a big broccoli salad based on her mother's recipe yesterday which will be our contribution to the dinner.

Another warm humid day. :(

Looks like we are in for another week of this.

Dinner in the Circle went well.

At our table we had Mrs.V's Bay Cousin and Buffalo Cousin, who are sisters and our neighbor to the west who is the oldest fulltime resident of the Circle.

As tends to happen among Mrs.V's siblings and cousins who spent decades of summers here together old stories get told. Last night they told the story about Bay Cousin's first date with her husband. They had met one evening at a night club on the South Fork. Soon thereafter he drove to the North Fork looking for her. He could not find the Circle. He went to a nearby marina and asked 2 young ladies where he could find Bay Cousin. They started laughing and Buffalo Cousin him that Bay Cousin was her sister.

They gave him directions to the Circle. When he got there guess who he found sitting on Bay Cousin's parent's porch. It was the future Mrs.V.

Now some guys after all that might have given up but he was a determined young man so he stuck around. He and Bay Cousin will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary next month.

But why go back 50 years?

Earlier last week-

Bay Cousin and her husband have a house full just now with their son, DIL and some others.

Because of the visitors they moved their new boat from the marina to an Anchorage just off the beach near their house. One day husband and son went to play a french version of bocce in a league that plays in New Suffolk a few miles to the east. Buffalo Cousin took her granddaughters to the town beach. DIL was in the house and Bay Cousin was alone on the beach.

Suddenly she sees that their new boat has slipped its anchor and is drifting away.

She runs into the water and grabs the line, as she put it a 75 year old 5' 0" woman trying to hold onto a boat. She yells for her DIL for help. DIL comes out but explains that she doesn't know how to swim. :o

Should mention it was very windy that day

Bay Cousin recovers from this shocking revelation and sends DIL to the town beach to get Buffalo cousin.

Buffalo Cousin arrives and dives into the water in her clothes. She holds the boat line while Bay Cousin runs inside to call her husband and son.

The 2 cousins can't just pull the boat into the beach because son failed to raise the outboard motor after anchoring the boat.

After about 30 minutes husband and son arrive.

Son swims to boat, gets motor started and takes it to the marina slip.

Anchor line had detached from the anchor.(someone didn't know how to tie an anchor bend knot?)

The next day at low tide they recovered the anchor.

Our full Circle didn't last long. Buffalo Cousin's daughter, SIL and granddaughters left yesterday morning for the long drive back to Buffalo.

Buffalo Cousin left this morning to make the same trip.

The cottage to our east will likely remain dark until Bay and Buffalo Cousins' brothers come down to shut it down for the winter.

Mrs. V's DC Cousin and her husband plan to leave on Aug 23rd. Still some chance they may return for a week in the Fall.

Our NC niece and her family arriving Saturday for a week.

Friends from our former city in Texas will arrive sometime after that for a week or two.

Then our younger daughter will be here to help with Mrs.V's hip surgery recuperation.

The toilet in the little cottage that Mrs. V owns with her #2 brother developed some serious cracks in the bowl. So the plumber came this morning to replace it. Since we are all getting older we went with an elongated bowl and a comfort height seat which makes it easier for old folk to get up.

We had been concerned that the wood under the toilet might be rotten. Happily this was not the case. The larger elongated toilet base definitely was supported by strong dry wood.

This is good because our NC niece and her family are arriving on Saturday and will be staying there.

Speaking of NC, Mrs. V's #2 brother's foot problem turned out to be gout.

They missed their trips here and to Boston (his wife's hometown) but they will get to Nebraska even though they will fly instead of taking their RV.

Might get here in the Fall.

For height challenged individuals, moi, for instance, the toilets of yore are the best. I can touch the floor with my feet and get up easily.

I need to have my bathroom completely redone and, at my age, I think I'll have them add grab bars where it makes sense. Since both my mom and an older sister have had hip replacements, I want to be proactive on being able to continue to live in this house.

Hubby put grab bars in his mom's house. They were lifesavers, especially as she became more debilitated. Lifting someone's full body weight as opposed to the person themselves pulling up and holding the grab bar is consequential day after day and month after month.

The recipes with cocaine instead of flour can be problematic. Getting the texture right is the trick. ;)
