South Carolina State University says a 19-year-old student was arrested Tuesday in connection to shots being fired in an academic building.

Rolando J. Ifill, of Charleston, has been charged with carrying a firearm on school property, SC State spokesman Sam Watson said. Additional charges are pending.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

Campus police responded and immediately subdued Ifill after a foot chase, Watson said.

4 students shot in Benjamin Mays High School parking lot in SW Atlanta

https://www.fox5atlanta.com/news/shooti ... ol-atlanta
A police officer with Atlanta Public Schools was on the scene as shots, which injured four students, were fired in the parking lot of Benjamin E. Mays High School in southwest Atlanta on Wednesday.

That revelation came during a joint press conference late Wednesday evening with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, flanked by representatives from both the Atlanta Public Schools Police Department and the city of Atlanta Police Department.

A fight broke out around 4 p.m., just after students were dismissed for the day. Officials say that led to gunshots being fired.

Four students, only identified as three 17-year-olds and one 18-year-old, all male, were rushed to an area hospital and are expected to survive. No other students, faculty, or staff were injured, according to the school district.

"There was an officer on scene while those shots were being fired, he broadcasted over the radio, requested additional support," said Atlanta Public Schools Police Chief Ronald Applin.

The campus was quickly flooded with officers from both APS and the APD, as well as firefighters and medics.

Student faces attempted murder charges in an alleged plot to carry out school shooting after classmate raised concerns

https://www.cnn.com/2024/02/15/us/schoo ... index.html
A high school student in California was arrested and is facing attempted murder charges in a plot to carry out a shooting on campus that was uncovered after a classmate expressed concerns the teen was “fixated on school shootings and had access to weapons,” police said.

Sebastian Villasenor, 18, was arrested Saturday and at his home investigators found seven rifles, two revolvers, a handgun and a shotgun, along with more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition, Ontario Police Chief Mike Lorenz said at a news conference Wednesday.

Villasenor had five intended victims – all students – and was considering a sixth, Lorenz said. The five intended victims were girls, according to a criminal complaint.

Villasenor “had every intention of carrying out a school shooting,” Lorenz said. He “was obsessed with school shootings and police response times. He researched tactical supplies and was in the process of choosing a specific date.”

Villasenor is charged with one count of attempted criminal threats and five counts of attempted murder, according to the complaint and a news release from the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office.

CNN is working to identify Villasenor’s legal representation. He is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday, the district attorney’s office said. He is being held without bail, jail records show.

The investigation began February 8 when officials from Ontario Christian High School contacted police after a student reported concerns about a classmate, Lorenz said. Ontario is about 40 miles east of Los Angeles.

At least 2 wounded in shooting outside high school basketball game near Kansas City

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/shooting-o ... -injuries/
Shots were heard "at the conclusion" of the game at North Kansas City High School, the city said in a statement provided to CBS News. North Kansas City is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area.

Two Clay County Sheriff's deputies who were providing security for the game itself responded to the entrance of the school's football field, where they found a crime scene with one victim, the city said.

It was later learned there was a second shooting victim, a juvenile, the city said. Both were rushed to local hospitals in critical condition. The juvenile was later upgraded to serious condition.

The shooting occurred outside the building where the game was being played, the North Kansas City Schools district said in a message it shared with families and staff.

Uvalde Police Chief Announces Resignation
The news comes less than a week after an investigation by the city of Uvalde found that city police officers made mistakes during a 2022 mass shooting, but did not violate policy.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/12/us/d ... 595e2e6e66
The police chief in Uvalde, Texas, who was out of town during the school shooting that left 21 people dead in May 2022, announced on Tuesday that he would step down. His resignation is the latest fallout from the turmoil in law enforcement over the length of time it took for officers to confront the gunman.

The chief, Daniel Rodriguez, did not give a reason for his decision to resign.

His department and others that responded that day have come under criticism for the more than 70 minutes it took officers to enter the classrooms where the gunman was holed up with teachers and students. His announcement comes less than a week after an investigation by the city concluded that Uvalde officers who were on the scene acted in good faith and did not violate department policy.

Mr. Rodriguez, who has been the police chief since 2018, was in Arizona at the time of the shooting, but was in communication with the officer he had left in charge, Lt. Mariano Pargas Jr. Mr. Pargas resigned in November 2022 after 18 years on the force, and has since been re-elected as a county commissioner.

Former assistant principal of Virginia school where 6-year-old shot his teacher has been charged with child abuse

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/fo ... rcna147041
Ebony Parker is facing eight counts related to the day of the shooting, according to the online docket, each of which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. A warrant has been issued for her arrest, the docket shows.

Court records filed in Newport News Circuit Court were unsealed Tuesday, about a month after a grand jury filed the charges.

NBC News could not immediately obtain a copy of the indictment for details on the charges.

The Newport News Commonwealth Attorney's Office did not immediately respond Tuesday to a request for comment. It was not immediately known if Parker had legal representation and she could not be reached for comment.

The Jan. 6, 2023, shooting of first-grade teacher Abigail Zwerner raised concerns about potential security failures at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News and in a school district rattled by other incidents of gun violence at other campuses.

Authorities say Zwerner was intentionally shot by one of her students but escorted her panicked class to safety. A bullet ripped through Zwerner's left hand, rupturing bones before it lodged in her upper chest, leaving behind fragments.

Three months after the classroom shooting, she filed a $40 million lawsuit against the school district alleging that administrators failed to listen to multiple warnings from staff and students that the child had a handgun. Parker resigned in the wake of the suit.

Lawyers for Zwerner welcomed additional charges in the case on Tuesday.

“These charges are very serious and underscore the failure of the school district to act to prevent the tragic shooting of Abby Zwerner,” attorneys Diane Toscano, Kevin Biniazan and Jeffrey Breit said in a statement. “The school board continues to deny their responsibility to Abby, and this indictment is just another brick in the wall of mounting failures and gross negligence in their case.”

Absolutely, but this is a step further. This is the assistant principal at the school where the shooting occurred, who apparently failed to heed some warnings.

I agree, and it is refreshing to see. In a way. Although the whole situation is very, very sad.

Nashville teacher threatens to ‘shoot up’ preschool, police say
One teacher said she overheard the teacher saying things such as, “when I start shooting, you better run,” according to police.

A Nashville teacher threatened to pull a gun on another teacher and preschool students on Thursday, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department.

At about 11 a.m., Metro officers on MNPD’s Rapid School Safety Team were dispatched to The Academy of McCrory Lane on Newsom Station Road to a report that a teacher had made a threat toward a colleague and students. When officers arrived, they were met with an employee in the parking lot, who said the school had been placed on lockdown after the alleged threat.

Sheneca Cowart was taken into custody. Staff told police Cowart, 29, threatened to “shoot up” the preschool and that she keeps a gun “on her.”

One teacher stated she overheard Cowart saying things such as, “when I start shooting, you better run,” police said.

Cowart initially denied this claim, police said. She told a teacher that she was going to shoot them in the “kneecaps because it would not kill them,” according to a police report. She also denied having a gun on her. Police said they later found a gun in her purse and in her car.

Cowart was charged with threat of mass violence at a school, two counts of carrying a gun onto school property and one count of assault.

She’s being held on a $37,000 bond.

Teen suspect, victim identified in fatal shooting at Arlington's Bowie High School

https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/teen- ... n/3524378/
A 17-year-old police say gunned down a classmate outside Arlington's Bowie High School on Wednesday afternoon has been identified.

In a statement Thursday morning, Arlington police said 17-year-old Julian Howard had been arrested and booked into the Arlington City Jail on a murder charge in connection with the death of 18-year-old Etavion Barnes.

According to the Arlington ISD, both Barns and Howard were students at the high school. While police have not revealed a motive for the shooting, they said Thursday morning they believe Howard specifically targeted Barnes.

Arlington police said Howard was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon and refused to speak with investigators without an attorney. According to jail records, Howard remains in custody and a bond amount for the murder charge has not been set. It's unclear if Howard has obtained a lawyer to speak on his behalf.
