This woman had to evacuate Bucha, Ukraine, when it was attacked. Her cat Sima escaped during the evacuation. For 45 days she went back to the house looking for the cat. Yesterday she found him. Photo: A. Hocpinchenko. ❤️🇺🇦❤️

This reminds me that 50 years ago while I was in college and collecting LP records to the extent my meager budget allowed, one of the orchestras recording for London Records (Decca in Europe) was the Philharmonia Hungarica which was made up of musicians who had escaped Hungary during the 1956 Soviet invasion. During my college years they recorded all the Hayden symphonies under the direction of conductor Antal Dorati.

The Philharmonia Hungarica, based in Germany, existed from 1956 to 2001.

I’ve seen comments about the fact that so many Ukrainians speak Russian with claims that of course those Ukrainians must be pro-Russia. Below is the start of a long twitter thread of a Ukrainian who grew up speaking both Ukrainian and Russian who explains about why you see those two languages both being spoken in Ukraine and why, just because someone speaks Russian, does NOT make them pro-Russia.

Wait, Nancy Pelosi went to Kyiv and met with Zelensky?

But Fox News said she was too old to be in Congress!

How could she do that? :confuzzled:

Russian compensation and reparations cannot be allowed to be paid in rubles. Insist on EU Euros and at least ten thousand dollars worth per recipient.
Russia’s ruble hit its strongest level in 7 years despite massive sanctions. Here’s why
Published Thu, Jun 23 2022
Russia’s ruble hit 52.3 to the dollar on Wednesday, its strongest level since May 2015. On Thursday afternoon in Moscow, the currency was trading at 54.2 to the greenback, slightly weaker but still near seven-year highs.

That’s a world away from its plunge to 139 to the dollar in early March, when the U.S. and European Union started rolling out unprecedented sanctions on Moscow in response to its invasion of Ukraine.

The ruble’s stunning surge in the following months is being cited by the Kremlin as “proof” that Western sanctions aren’t working.

“The idea was clear: crush the Russian economy violently,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said last week during the annual St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. “They did not succeed. Obviously, that didn’t happen.”

In late February, following the ruble’s initial tumble and four days after the invasion of Ukraine began on Feb 24, Russia more than doubled the country’s key interest rate to a whopping 20% from a prior 9.5%. Since then, the currency’s value has improved to the point that it’s lowered the interest rate three times to reach 11% in late May.

The ruble has actually gotten so strong that Russia’s central bank is actively taking measures to try to weaken it, fearing that this will make the country’s exports less competitive.
