A cuckoo braved sandstorms, thunderstorms and drought by flying the 4,000 miles between west Africa and the marshlands of Suffolk in only seven days.

The bird, known as Carlton II, is the fastest to have made the migration in a nine-year tagging study run by the British Trust for Ornithology.

He beat his tagged rivals wings down: PJ and Senan are still feeding in Spain and north Africa, according to data from their trackers. The long-tailed birds typically take two or three weeks to reach British breeding sites from Africa. They usually stay loyal to their breeding grounds, visiting every year.
