Federal investigators launch civil rights probe into Southlake, Texas, schools
Southlake, a diversifying suburb, has been at the center of a growing political battle over the ways schools address issues of race, gender and sexuality.

The U.S. Department of Education’s civil rights enforcement arm is investigating allegations of racial and gender discrimination at the Carroll Independent School District in Southlake, Texas, the school district confirmed Wednesday.

The department’s Office for Civil Rights notified the suburban school district’s officials last week that it had opened three investigations into complaints about racial and gender discrimination. The agency declined to provide details on the allegations and doesn’t comment on pending investigations, a spokesman said.

Karen Fitzgerald, a Carroll spokeswoman, confirmed that the district had received three notification letters and is “fully cooperating with this process.”

“Our focus will always be what is best for our students as we prepare them for their next steps in their educational journey,” she said, noting that federal law prohibits her from commenting on cases involving specific students.

Ever wondered what it takes to get into Harvard? Stellar grades, impressive extracurriculars and based on a recently published study, having deep pockets and a parent who either works or went there. Those last two are pretty important for Harvard’s white students because only about 57% of them were admitted to the school based on merit.

In reality, 43% of Harvard’s white students are either recruited athletes, legacy students, on the dean’s interest list (meaning their parents have donated to the school) or children of faculty and staff (students admitted based on these criteria are referred to as ‘ALDCs’, which stands for ‘athletes’, ‘legacies’, ‘dean’s interest list’ and ‘children’ of Harvard employees). The kicker? Roughly three-quarters of these applicants would have been rejected if it weren’t for having rich or Harvard-connected parents or being an athlete.

Here’s the thing– Harvard is insanely competitive. The admittance rate for the class of 2025 was 3.43%, the lowest rate in the school’s history, in a year that saw an unprecedented surge in applications. But as more and more comes to light about Harvard’s admissions process, it’s clear that the school’s competitiveness is not just based on academic strength or great test scores, but also whether or not your parents or grandparents have donated significantly to the school.

This dynamic is inherently racialized, with almost 70% of all legacy applicants at Harvard being white. According to the study, a white person’s chances of being admitted increased seven times if they had family who donated to Harvard. Meanwhile in stark contrast, African American, Asian American and Hispanic students make up less than 16% of ALDC students.

This kind of systemic favoritism of the white, wealthy and connected is not new when it comes to elite academic institutions. It’s always been a bit of a rigged game, one that overwhelmingly favors rich white people.

I visited the elementary school last week where my grandgurlzz attend school in Southlake. The student population was the most diverse I have seen anywhere. The teaching and administrative staff was all white.

At the gurlzz's bus stop were two Pakistani (?) children, two Asian children who had just moved from California, my two white gurlzz, and one white boy. We saw a Chinese family at the park near their home - the little girl rides on their bus.

Their daycare is diverse in children and staff including two Black teachers.

In Texas the lower the age group the more diverse. The current school age population is minority nonHispanic white. Most of the teachers are from generations that are majority nonHispanic white. Over time teachers will become more diverse.

WATCH: “INFORMED PATRIOTISM” 🧐

@GovBillLee announces he’s hiring a Christian school in Michigan [it's Hillsdale] to teach TN kids to be better “patriots” with “true 🇺🇸 history” (according to who? ☹️) — calling colleges “centers for anti-American thought” (because they teach the truth).

Yikes.

New study shows more than half of teachers ready to leave profession

https://www.kcci.com/article/national-e ... n/38982143
A new study shows teachers are more burned out now than ever before. They're quitting their jobs at a record pace because of exhaustion.

The National Education Association reports 55% of teachers are ready to leave the profession for good for a different job.

Sara Earleywine at Hoyt Middle School says she's constantly covering other classrooms, even if it's a totally different subject. She says her peers just can't take it anymore.

"To lose that passion for a job is incredibly sad. So, it just makes me sad when I have great educators come to me and say, I just can't do this anymore. I just want to go to an office, sit in a cubicle and do my job," Earleywine said.
At my pre-retirement employer we hired many former teachers for jobs that only required at most a 2 year degree. Working in industry they got better pay and benefits and much less stress.

I've had another one of "those" interactions on Twitter.

Fucking educators. All ya want is to "teach" from home in you pj's. All you do is indoctrinate the youth of America with your vile socialist swine ideology. How dare you complain about covid! Frickin ingrates. You're lucky to have such an easy job!

I had hoped that 6-9 months of remote learning would help parents and taxpayers be more appreciative of what teachers do. Esp k-12 teachers. Ya would think that by now parents/taxpayers would realize teachers aren't babysitters.

Nope. Teachers demands for masks and enforced quarantine is the last straw for people. And teachers are just being histrionic when we ask parents to send cleaning supplies to school with their nose picking precious angels.

And now parents/taxpayers demand to know why the fucking teachers ingrates no longer show up at their cushy job.

I've never seen k-12 teachers so demoralized. Higher Ed teachers are demoralized, but we have much more control in our jobs that those in k-12. And we can't legally give parents any info about their adult children, so we don't hear from parents often.

If teachers are so horrible, why aren't parents homeschooling?

Oh, that's right. They don't want to, don't know how to, or both.

Now parents are being called in to help as subs, bus drivers, cafe workers, etc. Where are they??

Whining on social media about how lazy and horrible teachers are.

My friend called me hysterically sobbing because she found out that her kiddo's (my godchild) teacher took her hearing aid away because "she wasn't listening anyways". The school quietly sent the teacher home and didn't say anything to us. I am gonna catch a charge over this.

Indiana school counselor tells parents their kids can opt out of Black History Month lessons
The district said it is “gathering more information on the matter.”

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/in ... d_nn_tw_ma
“Studies show that students who have a greater understanding of diversity in the classroom and outside world will demonstrate improved learning outcomes such as improved grades, better peer relationships, and greater career success later on,” White wrote. “These lessons can provide a great impact on students and help facilitate a better learning environment for all.”

But the memo ended with: “If you would like to opt your child out of receiving these lessons then sign the form below and have your child return it to the school to give it to the teacher.”

The memo circulated on social media this week and prompted backlash against the school in Brown County, about 40 miles south of Indianapolis.

In a statement Wednesday, Emily Tracy, the superintendent of Brown County Schools acknowledged the memo and said district officials were “gathering more information on the matter.”

To be fair, everyone knew there’d be an invasion so they were likely getting out and it’s sheer luck it was before, not after.

Indiana teacher granted early retirement after slapping student in the face, charged with battery
:snippity:
After a police investigation, Hosinski was preliminarily charged with battery, which is a felony, the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office said in a news release posted to Facebook Thursday evening. A request for formal charges has been submitted, the sheriff's office said.
:snippity:
Hosinski, a 40-year teaching veteran who a school social media post named its Teacher of the Year for 2020, had planned to retire as a World Civilization and Sociology teacher in June, according to school board meeting minutes from January.

Less than two hours after Hosinski hit the student on February 25, he requested that the Baugo Community School Board grant him early retirement, Superintendent Byron Sanders said in a letter to families on Sunday.

On February 28, the school board unanimously approved the early retirement request. Hosinski will receive all usual retirement benefits, a source familiar with board policies told CNN.

What triggered the confrontation

The altercation began after Hosinski confronted the student about wearing a hooded sweatshirt to class, Sanders said in a February 25 news release. Hoods are not allowed in school except on special days, the school's handbook shows.

From there, a verbal exchange ensued, and Hosinski slapped the student in the face and the student's head hit the wall, causing "visible injuries," Sanders said.
