Hey, if'n he came back today, he'd be pro-LGBTQ and against the death penalty and in favor of gun control ... you know we'd just have to crucify the bastid a second time, since the first one didn't stick. :|

The protestors are clearly wrong. The statue/sculpture/idol offends their fragile feelings, yes, but does it offend their god? If their god existed and were offended, wouldn't he/she/it smite the offending object? A quick thunderbolt to display displeasure, very traditional?

The absence of smiting confirms that there is no offended deity in this case.

Actually, getting hit by lightning was seen as a sign of Gods blessing in the middle ages and further back. The Oak tree was seen as sacred to Zeus because they get hit by lightning more, not in spite of it. Martin Luther getting hit by lightning in the ass in his youth spurred him on to see why he was so blessed. (No I'm not joking, Luther got hit by lightning, reputedly in the ass.)

Honestly, I don't know what drug induced fever made someone put up that statue but its ugly as sin. I can call my Feces "Earth Mother" too, but it will still look like shit.

The article says they'd be okay with it if " the name is changed so that it is an abstract piece of art with no spiritual element. "
Are they confused about the difference between spiritual and religious? Why would religious leaders care about a 'goddess' statue anyway? Would they feel the same about an indigenous spiritual icon?

Personally, I like it. She has put a lot of thought into the design by using native materials and symbols. And the colors are beautiful. Maybe they're offended because it's more of a fertility goddess shape.

Yeah, here's the only thing I know about fertility goddesses (and gods) - you gotta specify.

I know this on account of how I have a nice t-shirt that I got at Pike Place Market in Seattle in 1995, and it features a fertility god named Juma - allegedly from Africa - on the front of the shirt. Still in good condition, I wore it last week.

And I do apologize, but as a lifelong red-blooded American male Earthling, when I see the word fertility I think about Earthlings reproducing like we do, which is fun and results in more Earthlings sometimes. As you know, five thousand years ago the question whether someone was fertile or not was a very, very big deal, important to the survival of the tribe. I am not just talking about women. Lots of menfolk are infertile.

But in the picture on the front of my t-shirt, Juma is blowing a horn in one hand and is throwing seeds with his other hand. So he is definitely a fertility god, but he does fertility of crops, which is also important, but the point is, not all fertility gods (or goddesses) are concerned with human fertility.

Some of them just do crops. :|
Edit: Probably a few generalists out there, they do fertility of anything, even space aliens and stuff.

Yes, quite a few, actually :) Among the Norse pantheon, we've got at least 3 fertility generalists - Frey, Freyja and Thor. In traditional wedding ceremonies, a representation of his hammer Mjollnir is placed in the lap of the bride to help ensure her fertility (sadly, there's no corresponding male ceremony, though that may be in part because it could be rather painful is you're not careful.) Thor was also popular among farmer, though, because of his association with rain and it's role in the fertility of crops.

Actually, the only fertility specialist I know of is Ceres, the Greek or Roman goddess of grain. Her name is where we get the word "cereal" from. There's probably more out there - I'm not familiar with every pantheon , but generalists are a lot more common AFAIK.

ETA: Speaking of fertility stuff, years ago, while I was waiting to hear back from the Social Security office on my disability application, I went to a spring fertility ritual to ask for financial fertility, in case it would help me get the disability approved without having to mess with denials and appeals and so forth. A couple weeks later, not only did I get a letter saying I'd been approved (on my first try), but it include a check for a few thousand dollars. Social Security decided I'd actually been disabled for 18 month prior to my applying for the payments, and apologized that they could only provide 12 months of back benefits. I know it could be a total coincidence that it worked out that way - I fully accept that as a valid possibility - but who's to say there wasn't a little nudge thrown in there, eh? :)

:panic: NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

You know, I really enjoy the Marvel movies (I haven't been able to see the Love and Thunder one yet, though) but they sure do mess up a lot of the mythology.

I went to a couple Marvel movies and my wife and son would discuss them in the car on the way home, and how they fit into the MCU at large. They knew this whole thing that I didn't know, so I learned. And by about 2015 I was hooked. I've seen a ton of Marvel movies, and Thor Ragnarok was one of the most enjoyable. Cate Blanchett was a deliciously, appallingly evil Hela, the flick was worth it just to see her.

I didn't say it was accurate, though.

Oh, that movie was great! But no, not accurate at all :D

I love the MCU stuff, though. I think I've seen all the movies that have been made available for home viewing and a few of the Disney+ shows, too. It can be a bit crazy to keep everything straight, but the whole thing is just so much fun!

Yeah, there's an app a wiki for that. Honestly, that's a good resource for keeping the movies straight. Haven't really looked at it in a while, but I liked it when I used it. Very comprehensive.

I really wish they had done a proper Hela and had half her face look like a corpse. But then its the MCU's Hela, and we cant distract the teenage guy hormones with Mythological accuracy.

Going back to fertility Gods, the Celtic God was Cernunnos, the Antlered male God of Fertility, Life and Animals. Yes we made a guy the fertility one, deal with it. His imagery was used in the TV series "Robin of Sherwood" as Herne the Hunter.

Not a limerick, but...

Where are you going, my pretty maid?
Why do you pass me by?
"I'm on my way to danthing thkool"
She lisped and heaved a thigh.

I read that decades ago in Scientific American, but I can find no trace of it on the web.

I did find this very similar verse from 1922...

That's cool, but I think that was before God invented high-powered rifles and deer hunting season. Deer are pretty much just victims now, sad to say. Not a symbol of male virility in this great nation, they can't even shoot back, haha!

A church in Texas has apologised to Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and agreed to pay legal damages after staging an unauthorised production of the hit Broadway musical whose songs and dialogue had been changed to include Christian themes.

Produced by nondenominational church The Door McAllen, the production was followed by a sermon stating that God could help people struggling with homosexuality.

It was first livestreamed on Friday 5 August. Clips were subsequently shared on social media and lawyers for the official Hamilton sent a cease-and-desist letter.

In a statement posted on Instagram on Tuesday, church pastor Roman Gutierrez personally apologised to Miranda and the writers and producers of Hamilton for staging a production without permission that “infringed on the rights and copyrights of many”.
