I am now getting messages from the county about orthopoxvirus, the renamed "monkeypox." Three new cases here, to a total of five, I think.

This is an opinion piece.
By reducing monkeypox risk to a simplistic binary equation, public health leaders are prioritizing fighting stigma over their duty to directly inform the public about the true contours and drivers of this global outbreak. In particular, they are failing to properly convey the seriousness of this burgeoning crisis to gay and bisexual men.

Here is what we can discern from data collected about monkeypox so far: This viral outbreak isn’t just mostly occurring among men who have sex with men. The confirmed cases, at least to date, have consistently almost entirely occurred among this demographic, which accounts for 96 percent or more of diagnoses where data are available.

Per capita, the few monkeypox cases in women and children remain minuscule compared with the rate among gay and bisexual men. Of course, substantial transmission could always occur among such other groups. But researchers at the WHO and elsewhere have speculated that the monkeypox reproduction rate will likely remain significantly lower in such demographics — meaning the virus will more likely hit transmission dead ends among them than among gay and bisexual men.

A New York resident has tested positive for polio, the highly contagious viral disease that can cause muscle weakness, paralysis and death, state health officials said Thursday.

The New York State Department of Health said the person who tested positive for the disease lives in Rockland County, about 30 miles north of Manhattan.

The last known case of polio recorded in the U.S. was in 2013, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Both the New York State Department of Health and the Rockland County Department of Health are urging healthcare providers to be on the lookout for additional cases.

It's not just the disease itself, it's when they put you in the barrel with all the other monkeypox victims and then make dad jokes. Those are the worst jokes ever.

New York is ground zero for several “new” diseases.
Polio found in New York wastewater as state urges vaccinations
WASHINGTON, Aug 1 (Reuters) - The polio virus was present in wastewater in a New York City suburb a month before health officials there announced a confirmed case of the disease last month, state health officials said on Monday, urging residents to be sure they have been vaccinated.

The discovery of the disease from wastewater samples collected in June means the virus was present in the community before the Rockland County adult's diagnosis was made public July

Newly identified Langya virus tracked after China reports dozens of cases
Virus, which causes symptoms including fever, fatigue, cough, loss of appetite and muscle aches, is believed to have spread from animals to humans

Researchers have begun tracking a newly identified virus in China, with dozens of cases recorded so far.

The novel Langya henipavirus (LayV) was first detected in the north-eastern provinces of Shandong and Henan in late 2018 but was only formally identified by scientists last week.

The virus was likely transmitted from animals to humans, scientists said, and Taiwan’s health authority is now monitoring the spread. The researchers tested wild animals and found LayV viral RNA in more than a quarter of 262 shrews, “a finding that suggests that the shrew may be a natural reservoir”. The virus was also detected in 2% of domestic goats and 5% of dogs.

Initial investigations into the virus were outlined in correspondence published by scientists from China, Singapore and Australia in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) last week.

In people, the virus caused symptoms including fever, fatigue, cough, loss of appetite and muscle aches. All of the people infected had a fever, the scientists said. The virus was the only potential pathogen found in 26 of the 35 people, suggesting that “LayV was the cause of febrile illness”.

People in 8 states should be aware of the signs of yet another tick-borne disease as cases rise, CDC says

Catherine Schuster-Bruce
Fri, March 17, 2023 at 3:31 PM GMT+1
  • People in eight states should know signs of another tick-borne disease as cases rise, the CDC said.
Babesiosis is caused by tiny parasites that infect red blood cells and are spread by certain ticks.
The disease can cause a mild illness with no symptoms to a serious illness with multi-organ failure.
People in eight states should know the signs of the tick-borne disease babesiosis as cases rise, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said.

Babesiosis cases are on the rise in the North East (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont), and the disease is newly endemic in three of those states (Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont), according to a CDC report based on data collected between 2011 to 2019 from 10 states.

"Members of the public and health care providers in states with endemic babesiosis and bordering states should be aware of the clinical signs of babesiosis and risk factors for Babesia infection," the CDC said in the report published on Friday.

The latest report comes amid a 25% rise in the number of US tick borne disease cases overall, including Lyme disease, the CDC said. According to the CDC, the number of babesiosis cases reported increased from 40,795 in 2011 to 50,856 in 2019.

Babesiosis is usually spread by blacklegged ticks

According to the report, most babesiosis cases in the US are caused by tiny parasites spread by blacklegged ticks, called Ixodes scapularis, in northeastern and midwestern states. People can also catch it from contaminated blood transfusions, and organ transplants from infected donors. Babies can catch it from mothers with babesiosis.

Candida auris fungus spreading in U.S. hospitals - CDC

https://www.reuters.com/business/health ... ce=twitter
Potentially deadly fungal infections with Candida auris are spreading rapidly in U.S. healthcare facilities, with cases nearly doubling between 2020 and 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

The number of cases rose by 44% to 476 in 2019, up from 330 in 2018, and subsequently 59% to 756 in 2020 and by an additional 95% to 1,471 in 2021, the agency's researchers reported on Monday in Annals of Internal Medicine.

Also concerning was a tripling in 2021 of the number of cases that were resistant to echinocandins, the class of drugs most often recommended for treatment of the disease.

A high fever with chills that does not get better after taking antibiotics may be a sign of Candida auris infection.

People who are very sick, have invasive medical devices such as mechanical ventilators, or have long or frequent hospital stays are at particular risk for the infections, the report said.

Research involving Danish babies’ dirty diapers has provided a plethora of information on previously unknown viruses — and the best view yet of the makeup of the infant gut microbiome.

Writing in the journal Nature Microbiology, an international team of researchers reports it has uncovered 10,000 new viruses in infant feces.

The study looked at the feces of 647 healthy Danish 1-year-olds enrolled in a long-term asthma and chronic inflammatory disease study. The kids’ dirty diapers yielded a surprisingly diverse set of viruses — many of which have yet to be described by science. Overall, the researchers uncovered 10,000 viral species from 248 viral families; of those families, just 16 were already known.

Dang - now the former guy will have to rewrite history to accomodate the spread of a virus from Denmark babies rather than a Wuhan lab
