I think the bigger problem isn't the anti-science, but the individualism. Too many of the people who DO value science and education have the attitude that it something they can seek to have an advantage over others and see other people being educated as a threat instead of a source of wealth.

The anti-science crowd supports its own, but too much of the pro-science crowd actively works against OTHER people learning it.
