I don’t know why they need to know your purpose. That seems over the the top to me, freedom lover that I am.

Commercial border crossings in El Paso slow to snail's pace after Texas steps up security

https://www.reuters.com/world/us/commer ... ce=twitter
Hundreds of commercial trucks waited in an hours-long line on Saturday to cross the border from the Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez into El Paso after Texas Governor Gregg Abbott ordered state troopers to step up inspections of north-bound vehicles.

"I've been here since 3 p.m. yesterday, I still haven't been able to cross," Mexican truck driver José Alberto Marin said as he waited to reach the port of entry.

"Who knows how much longer it will take," he added, saying that he was hauling a load of lamps bound for the United States.

The commercial border crossings between Ciudad Juarez and El Paso slowed to a snail's pace after Abbott directed the Department of Public Safety on Wednesday to begin conducting "enhanced safety inspections" of vehicles at the international ports of entry into Texas.

Well this will help supply chain problems. Maybe that's the intention, to exacerbate.

Someone should remind the Texas law enforcement members that they're not the Gestapo and being assholes isn't helping.

Or, maybe they are and enjoy fucking up everyone's life.

Perhaps but that is ill-considered. Much of the cross border truck traffic supports industrial activity that is partly done in Mexico and partly done in Texas. When Texas factories shut down because parts they need from Mexico haven't arrived Abbott will get some blame.

Also, another avocado shortage? Could happen if the trucks can't get thru. Avocados have a short shelf life.

Abbott won't get blamed by the people that matter: the morons that voted him into office.

Wouldn't it be federal officials who would conduct border searches, not state? Or is that just quaint?

I dunno, this seems a lot like Abbott interfering with federal immigration policy to me

Did Reuters make a snafu with their image description in the artice (in tweet further above):
Trucks wait in a long queue to cross into the United States, after the U.S Department of Public Safety (DPS) announced increased security checks at the international ports of entry into Texas, at the Zaragoza-Ysleta border crossing
That would be the TX - DPS ?

What has TX police to do with this, isn't it DHS and its Custom and Border Control who make the border checks? IS TX now stopping vehicles for extra inspections after crossing the border?

Once the trucks clear immigration and customs and drive on TX highways they are subject to TXDOT regulations. TX law enforcement can stop them for spot inspections.

Ah, but these aren't border searches, they're "vehicle safety inspections", of course.

Predicting food shortages, Sid Miller calls on Gov. Greg Abbott to stop new vehicle inspections at the border
Abbott’s new policy has resulted in hourslong delays and protester blockades at border crossings. The state’s agriculture commissioner criticized the measure as an “economy killing action.”

Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller called on Gov. Greg Abbott to halt his recent policy of additional commercial inspections at the border, calling the measure “political theater” and predicting it will leave grocery store shelves empty within weeks.

In an open letter addressed to the governor Tuesday, Miller said Abbott’s “economy killing action” is exacerbating already strained supply chains and causing massive produce shortages resulting in “untold losses” for Texas businesses.

“Your inspection protocol is not stopping illegal immigration,” Miller said in his letter. “It is stopping food from getting to grocery store shelves and in many cases causing food to rot in trucks — many of which are owned by Texas and other American companies. … The people of Texas deserve better!”

Desantis can now thank Abbott! 10 of the migrants bussed to DC by Abbott are from Venezuela. They said they knew they were being used as a political prop but said they didn’t care because they are on their way to Miami, and it will be easier to get there from DC than the border.
