I'm just here to say that every single one of the people who tolerated that made the wrong choice. And this is one of the great ills of humanity.
Firstly this isn't an attack on you, P0rtia. I just see this kind of thought all the time and its a dangerous one.

It's very easy to say that "Oh I would have been the one to stand up and face off the narcissist/bully" when you are not in the situation, but I'm telling you all right now that in all likelihood you would not.

When you are in the situation its a whole different story. Its a constant battering of your psyche day after day after day to the point you just give in as its easier than smashing off a brick wall. It's not one point where you just acquiesce, it's over time that your resistance slowly fades, the people who support you all quit or are fired which just leaves you more and more alone, everyone tells you that if you tell people whats really happening you are betraying the organization, and after 6 months you are browbeaten and longing to quit, but you are afraid to as if you do that's one less person offering any resistance at all, and you know if you resist too much you will be fired which means one less person offering any resistance at all

It took Trump a few years to really get control of the white house. Time wears people and organizations down, and Trumps internal shame is never ending so he never stops trying, never quits as if he stopped he would confront the ugly loser that he deep down knows he is.

The real story that inspired "the Caine Mutiny" had a Narcissist Captain turn a whole crew of US Navy sailors into compliant emotional wrecks inside 3 months. Don't be so arrogant to think you are better than them.

Quite frankly everyone in that white house is a victim, worn down by living in fear of having to drop everything to deal with the next tweet.

I would add that Suranis is also talking to me. As much as me standing from the distance could say, oh I would get myself out of that, I fear that is not how things would go. I have seen dysfunction such as this many times and you wonder why they don't run out but the fear of leaving, and the isolation while staying paralyzes you. To me, leaving the White House would not seem all that much because, it is always a temp job anyway, but I a not in their position. I am not sitting around worried that quitting will look bad on me when I try to back to the rest of the world. I sit around worried that the abuser or his supporters will continue their assault even after I leave.

Remember, abusers, spend their time blaming the victim and making the victim do what they must, recognize, resist, and report. We keep teaching those three words to youth and adults with the hope that they will have the strength they use it if needed, but it really is not that easy. We must refrain from blaming the victim. To do so reduces the chances of being strong enough to get out.

Obviously I should have clarified that when I said that the people working with/for Trump "made the wrong choice," I meant "made the wrong choice for themselves."

Yep.

Their initial leap into that universe was not well thought out.

This sort of spurious claim, you recall, is one often made about the Nazis: “I would have stood up against Hitler” or “…with the Jews.”

Easy to say. In the actual situation, not so much.

On the contrary, I'm sure they thought they could handle it; the point of interest for me is the first moment they realize that they are dealing with a malign abuser. I often with all children were taught in school to recognize the traits of these sociopaths, and to realize that they cannot win/break even--they must leave.

The abuse doesn't have to be aimed at the imaginary individual we're talking about; if you see it aimed at another, and still say, you're also making the wrong choice (for yourself).

Of course it is true that I believe that, in general, what is good for the group is good for the individual, so I don't exclude the truth that great harm occurs in the group when individuals make that critical wrong choice (for themselves).

After my bit about the dysfunctional and abusive world of the Trump WH and how the people who joined it were not making the best choice to join it, I started thinking back on the experiences I had while teaching. Some of the students had mothers who were currently with their boyfriend/husband du jour. As I am a rather independent type, I never really understood how they could go from one abusive relationship and then jump into the arms of some predator for yet another abusive relationship (watched some students do this as well). I realize some of the psychology behind it but I also do see it as people who were never comfortable with themselves. They were defined by who they were with or that they were with somebody/anybody, which is an instant invitation to abusers.

These WH staffers are likely not much different and their need for acceptance or to be seen a the top of the game blinds them to the danger of the abuser in chief.
Edit: While I was finishing my post, I was thinking about adding something about them thinking they could somehow go into this and resist the ugliness, which, of course, they can't but then Portia said it for me.

:yeahthat:

The wonders of experience combined with the survival (in the sense of not having been destroyed) of the questing mind we are born with, have led me to conclude in my dotage that the greatest scar/flaw/destructo-mechanism of humanity is our ability to abuse one another, in an ugly rainbow of ways from the snide remark to the rack. And abuse is fucking everywhere, mostly taken for granted and often admired. I'm for actions that push back against abuse without being abusive. That's it; that's my current guiding principle.

Eggs ackly. Didn’t the Great Orange Stain do that with the Parkland High shooting? “I would have rushed in and disarmed him”.

Yeah, sure.

Read Peril yesterday during travel day. It goes pretty fast if you skip the chapters on Biden.* My reaction was :panic: :panic: :panic:

But what pissed me off even more than trump's buffoonish behavior was all the Republicans talking among themselves about the train wreck that was trump, then going on Fox to sing his praises.

*I read the few few Biden chapters about his campaign but it wasn't anything I didn't already know so I kindled thru.

I was dozing in and out of sleep, so grain of salt and all, but I think CNN/New Day said they're going to have Grisham on tomorrow morning. This might shake out for an interesting book tour, I can't imagine Fox booking her anytime soon for tell-all about Trump bad dealings.

FYI, Peril has almost as many pages of notations in the back as it does text. Also, a lot of chapters on Biden's campaign that's nothing new. Sticking just to the trump chapters, I finished it in about four hours.

I’m about 1/3 of the way through Grisham’s book. So far, disappointed. More when I’m finished.

* Some authors should not read their own books.

* She likes(d? Maybe later) FLOTUS.

* Lindsey Graham liked hanging with celebs and all the food and drink he wanted. That’s why he cozied up to tfg, for the grift.

* No one likes Jarvanka

In the new book by Trump’s former WH Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham, she alleges that he was so upset that Stormy Daniels said he had a small penis shaped like a toadstool, that he called her from Air Force One to insist it wasn’t true.

Thought it was interesting that Peril went so far into the Afghanistan situation at the end, they really went till the last minute to the publishing deadline. We had the audiobook from the library (Overdrive) and really enjoyed it, went back a few times. Woodward & Costa are a new team.

Broward County Library hasn't purchased Grisham's book which is unusual. We "recommended" it. If you haven't taken advantage of the public library's free ebooks, audiobooks and movies, check it out, there's a ton of content.

When is the Mike Lindell book coming out? You know it's coming. Not the old book, a fresh book, "Me and my PCaps" or something. Expecting the next wave of books to be election fraudsters and grifters with their "memories" of the election challenges. Jesse Binnell, Matt DePerno, Doug Frank, "The Professor" et al (maybe not The Squid with all her litigation). Maybe Foggy's skeered to tell us he's started Fogbow Publishing to put out his pal Amy Kremer's book and others.

Is there a publisher that would touch it with a 10 foot pole? "Fortean Times" maybe?

Oh, sure. Not the usual major publishing houses, but yes.

Right-wing-anger porn and right-wing conspiracy theories have known publishers. WND Book used to be the go-to. There's Defender Publishing, etc.

Now, in fairness, a late friend and I would pore over issues of Fortean Times, over a few rounds of tea at a local Starbucks or equivalent, for really cool RPG campaign ideas. So Fortean Times has *value*, dammit. :)

Heard Grisham on the radio this morning, she said the colonoscopy was performed without anesthesia because tfg didn't want to have Pence in charge for even one minute.
