When you get to the UP (upper peninsula), be sure to find Christmas MI. It's along the Superior shore. Quaint little town with a year round population despite all the snow. It piles so deep in winter, everybody parks their car, and drives around on snow mobiles. No point clearing the roads. They'll just get dumped on again.Tiredretiredlawyer wrote: ↑Thu May 12, 2022 12:33 pm Next week I will have photos that ALMOST compete with bill's.► Show Spoiler

I've been to the UP, but only drove past Mackinaw. We will also be there in September.

I had occasion to look at lists of local wildlife rehabbers and what their permits allow. Imagine my surprise that almost all of them explicitly say, “NO SKUNKS.” Why is that?

Thanks! I knew it was a clever fake, but the who/what/why were not at the source for the image.pipistrelle wrote: ↑Fri May 13, 2022 3:25 pm

Re: Hijack This Thread
While it's a nice bit of schadenfreude, I suspect Candice is wrong once again. She doesn't cite the study, or flesh out the story. A tiny bit of Google Fu came back with a 2018 study on the neurological effects of ivermectin on humans that were treated for tropical diseases that fell in line with the intended efficacy. People generally handled it well, but some suffered quite a bit.Flatpoint High wrote: ↑Fri May 13, 2022 4:00 pm When "don't get your bowels in an uproar" becomes meaningless 1afqTMoGZLI3fTead8Xbt8Lq8rjN4wnmRP9MMKhQc_0.jpg
Of course, the majority of the Google returns were absolute garbage.

Re: Hijack This Thread
To expand on that, many states have explicitly made it illegal for wildlife rehabbers to rehabilitate skunks, raccoons, bats, coyotes, foxes, feral pigs, and opossums. Feral pigs because they are not native and are extremely destructive to habitat, opossums because they are considered a food source for other animal species (and in many states are not native wildlife), and the others because they are vectors for rabies.Azastan wrote: ↑Sat May 14, 2022 8:24 amRabies?pipistrelle wrote: ↑Fri May 13, 2022 10:57 pm I had occasion to look at lists of local wildlife rehabbers and what their permits allow. Re: Hijack This Thread
The only exclusions are deer (different permit), bats (possibly because they can carry rabies and you can't tell if you've been bitten by one), and skunks. My guess is it's the stench.Azastan wrote: ↑Sat May 14, 2022 11:45 amTo expand on that, many states have explicitly made it illegal for wildlife rehabbers to rehabilitate skunks, raccoons, bats, coyotes, foxes, feral pigs, and opossums. Re: Hijack This Thread
No, seriously, it's because of rabies. Wildlife rehabbers in states which permit rehabilitation of skunks usually must show proof that they have received pre-exposure rabies vaccinations.

Re: Hijack This Thread
For at least a week after birth it’s nearly impossible to tell a skunk from a squirrel or a chipmunk. Except maybe spotted skunks. Their spots appear on skin.
