Looks like George Sands Bryan died in 1943, when George Sloan Bryan was running the Hydrographic Office (he didn't pass away until 1964, when I was 11).

HOKAY! I have ordered a hardcover first edition used copy of Sam Houston (1917), by George Sands Bryan.

I will now note that the book I have is also a first edition used copy, published in 1926.

Sam Houston was published by Macmillan in 1917 and it says it was "in publisher's True Stories of Great Americans series."

Aha!

Edison: The Man and His Work was published by Alfred A. Knopf and a flyleaf says its recent biographies included Dostoevsky, Renoir, and Catherine the Great, none of whom would be a good fit in a series about Great Americans. :blackeye:

But Edison was a Great American, and if the same author wrote both biographies, you'd think that the Edison book would be one of the Macmillan series. Or maybe not, but I'm calling that a clue for lack of any real clues.

There are a ton of old, out of print books at archive.org, they have like 4 million books scanned and it's a great resource to find out of date publications. Books are at https://archive.org/details/internetarchivebooks.

Or -- Did you ask crack investigative journalist Sharon Rondeau to run this down? It could be a multi-part series at Post & Email and maybe -- just maybe -- some of the brain trust there like Joe DeMaio, Chuckles, Miki Booth and Rev Dr Laity Esq could put their detective hats on. Sharon is tight with Mike Zullo, maybe he'd come out of self-imposed exile to research this as the incredible detective he's shown himself to be. You've seen how effective at investigations they are. And they adore you, it would be a labor of love for them.

I have the book! I have an original copy, printed in 1926! This thing has a LOT of photos, it's a very high quality publication.

Even better - and I have been dawdling, I'm only at page 74 so far, I keep putting it down in favor of muttering and puttering - but even better, the man who wrote this book really understands the principles of electrical engineering, and he is explaining Edison's inventions, because he knows how they work.

But George Sands Bryan wrote a biography of Sam Houston, which is wending its way toward me as I write this. He wrote a lot of books. Did he really understand all of Edison's inventions, like deep into the weeds of the mysteries of electricity?

And the author is writing just 50 years after Edison moved to Menlo Park and opened up his first real "invention laboratory". It is totally cool to see the author, who thinks he lives in a world far beyond the scope of his imagination and thinks it's a totally modern world, writing about the dawn of the electrical revolution. He is amazed when another inventor manages to send NINE separate messages on a single wire simultaneously.

'Course, these were telegrams. Not streaming video on fiber optic.

WE live in a truly modern world. There probably won't be a lot of changes in tech over the next fifty years. :rotflmao: :liar:

Oh, wait ...

Now here's the sad and embarrassing part of this whole story - my grandfather, Thomas Edison, and all their contemporaries lived in a world of exclusively white men. By 1880 Edison had a hundred white men working at Menlo Park.

Were there any brilliant women or people of color in 1880? No, of course not, don't be silly. :liar:

I was really enjoying this one, right up until I read that.

Y'know, I was born in the old world, women were just beginning to work and go to college, but they couldn't have bank accounts, couldn't own real estate ...

And I lived long enough to see almost equality of the women, don't try to tell any of them "you can't do __ because you're a woman" ... I have seen MASSIVE changes in the status of women, and I can't help but think, Was that so bad? Was that so painful? And wouldn't my grandfather and his elk have had a better life, if they had just treated their women like equals?

The book isn't so much fun now. I'm a feminist.

Foggy,

Have you considered contacting the publisher? The publisher has to have an archivist who specializes in matters of this sort. You might find out from this individual where this author purported to live at the time of publication, or any other salient personal information that might confirm or refute whether your grandfather was indeed the author.
Off Topic
My mom was a Navy nurse in WWII. Before she was shipped off to Australia, she tended the wounded sailors and Marines at the San Diego Naval Hospital. My mom was a very attractive woman (at least my dad and I thought so.) Anyway, TIME magazine sent a writer and photographer to the hospital for a feature story, and my mom was shepherded into the center of several people surrounding a hospital bed with a wounded sailor. Her photos were published in the magazine. I contacted TIME/LIFE in the 00s to see if I could get a copy of the original photo sized larger than the magazine pictures. They were unsure if the negative was still available, but they charged something like $250/hour for research plus whatever for the processing of the negative, if they even still had the negative. She also had her picture taken with Bob Hope and his troupe when he made the rounds during the war. My mom had a real interesting life in her youth. She was aces.

Alfred A. Knopf has been acquired by some giant publisher now. I received the Sam Houston biography in the mail today, and I should have a report soon.

Cool story about your mom.

On a more serious note ... a more important mission ... I have somehow injured my so-called "good" shoulder, the one that doesn't currently get a cortisone shot every 90 days. The left shoulder was an old football injury, you may recall, and I often played football with both shoulders, as one does.

And the only time I could get an appointment with my shoulder specialist is 7:50 am Thursday. And I hate fighting traffic to get down there, but I don't mind getting up early, SO (here comes the serious and important part):

At 6:30 a.m. I will report to the Denny's that's virtually across the street from the doctor's office, and will enjoy a leisurely breakfast while I convene an official session of the Fogbow Unified Grand Jury and indict the 45th president of the United States of America on about eleventy high crimes and misd- ... no, just high crimes.

I know a quorum for the grand jury at Denny's is four, but we learned with Mr. Christopher Bruce that if I sit at a table for four and use funny voices, the effect is astonishingly authentic. And there might be pole dancing!

Then I have to go to the stupid doctor. :(

This Denny's news is SO COOL! Please, please, photos and video of this historic Grand Slam Grand Jury event! GIL takes dozens of hours for his fake Grand Juries... when there are some clips will post them on GIL's Twitter to show him how Grand Juries SHOULD be run. The dotard is going to go nuts on Pravda Social when he sees he's finally been INDICTED!

And square and/or pole dancing makes it even better. Any chance Walt Fitzpatrick will be there? He could help make a quorum. Or. if your pal Amy Kremer got in the car toot sweet, she probably could get there in time with her daughter Kylie. If you asked her really nicely, maybe she could make a quick run to Pensacola, pick up The Spork and BunnyDog, and then meet you at Denny's. Most leisurely. You'd have a quorum + a hopping dog. Everybody wins!

Do you think this will be your server at Denny's?

And here's something inspirational for your journey:

It is a novelty. Customers might find it cool... a bit. But the novelty will wear off.

I was a server in some previous lifetime. But, it's Denny's so their customers don't expect much, I guess. Are they supposed to tip the robot because their server doesn't know how to move because it is busy? Lazy.

I have had a long, terrible, annoying day. At 3:30 my doctor said if I was going to be combative, maybe I should think about getting another primary care physician. I told him I tried to get a different one twice already but he keeps telling me the other doctors aren't seeing new patients. But I wasn't being combative, I was mocking him by that time. I told him ol' Wifehorn and I tell jokes about how he has seen me 13 times in 4 years (would have been more but pandemic) and every time he orders a full blood test, even though I am not ill. Dr. Blood Test.

The notes on the last one were slightly elevated white blood count, don't know why, test him again next time.

And I kept saying, I don't know why I'm even here. I never have asked to see him, he insists on follow-up appointments and then he insists on major blood tests, and I finally explained to him that I was not getting any blood tests today unless he gave me a medical reason for it.

"Oh, I have medical reasons you wouldn't be able to understand," and then he was ticked when I quoted his notes on my chart.

So then he said he needed to ask me some questions.

"Do you smoke, sir?"

Yanno, fuck you. I didn't say fuck you, but I quit smoking 13 years ago. This asshole has never known me a day when I've smoked. He saw me in JUNE and ordered a series of blood tests, and he knew then that I DON'T SMOKE ANY MORE.

So I said, "You're asking me whether I started smoking again, at age 69, since last JUNE, and that's why I'm here today, so you can ask me every four months whether I'm smoking again yet, and then order blood tests?"

Oh, harrumph, harrumph, if you want to be combative.

:boxing:

He never did give me any medical reason why he requested the appointment, and he never gave me any medical reason why I needed another series of blood tests, and he was seriously pissed when I said, "How about I call you when I get sick or injured?"

OMG, I wanted to leave without making a follow-up appointment for more major blood work that he refuses to explain to me!

So then he stormed out, and that's the last I will ever see of him.

What a jerk. Sound like he's trying to make money by scheduling unnecessary tests and appointments. Did you ask if he's another graduate of Taft Law & Med Skool n Stuff?

1. He sounds like he DEFINITELY also needs to be indicted on Thursday at Denny's.
2. Did you show him your cool new Fogbow avatar?

Doctors so often forget THEY work for US. I literally have a medical notebook that goes with me to any appt, that has my questions and their answers written in it. If they are not willing to answer questions or explain procedures, I'm not willing to see them. Every single one of my doctors (and I have a bunch) will answer any question I ask and make sure I understand it. That also includes their nurses and staff. They're also willing to listen to my input when necessary. My endocrinologist has added 2 tests to my regular blood work after I asked him to test for something specifically that wasn't on the usual list. I'm now on a pill for one of them and he even said "good catch" after I requested it and the value was low.

Over the last year, I have learned how critically important it is to have doctors you trust, and who trust you, and who are willing to work with you. I know my own body better than anyone and my doctors, without fail, listen and take into account what I tell them. I also realize how incredibly fortunate I am to have that relationship with my medial team.

Yeah, ol' Wifehorn is going to set me up with a lady doctor she knows.
orlylicious wrote: Tue Oct 04, 2022 7:27 pm What a jerk. Sound like he's trying to make money by scheduling unnecessary tests and appointments.
That's the thing - he's not the kind of doctor I had growing up. If you get sick or injured, you can't see him, he's fully booked up with follow-ups so he can find out if they started smoking recently. Go to Urgent Care or the Emergency room with your stupid illness.

I don't know why I didn't get combative a long time ago. I didn't get any infection, but I gave blood samples for testing THIRTEEN VISITS IN A ROW and I was done. Fuck that guy.
Edit: And Sugar, my question was, "Why am I here?" and I never did get an answer.
To those helping with the book project, I have now read the Edison biography and much of the Sam Houston biography, and I will say that they are very, very different books. The Edison biography has footnotes, appendices, a very good index. It is meticulously researched and documented. The Sam Houston biography has none of those. I think the writing style is different, but not wildly different. That may be explained by the fact that the books were written 9 years apart, Sam Houston in 1917 and Edison in 1926.

Bottom line is, I'm still working on it.

But not this morning, I have class.
Edit: Last edit - he was treating me for two illnesses - hypertension and type 2 diabetes. He prescribes pills, and I have to do the diet and exercise. My A1C was 6.4 yesterday, and my blood pressure was 112/60, which is mighty gaudy for a 69 year old man, so he has done well on that. But I don't need to see him 3x a year.

I'm also a type 2 diabetic and, because of that, my very good doctor wants to see me twice a year. However, he does a full range of blood tests just once a year, and the tests relating to the diabetes before every visit. That seems fair. I also, like many women in my family, take thyroid medication, but that condition is very well controlled now. My most recent A1C was 6.5 and my BP was 110/64, so we are very similar.

By the way, to anyone with diabetes, I highly recommend getting the FreeStyle Libre glucose sensors. It allows you to see what your glucose level is doing at all times. Because it's testing interstitial fluid instead of your blood like a finger prick, its readings lag the blood test by a little bit.

My Seattle sister, who is a type I diabetic, started using the sensors three years ago when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The treatments played havoc with her blood sugars, so her doctor recommended the sensors so she could see at any time what her glucose levels were doing. She still relies on finger pricks before giving herself insulin, but she loves that the sensors show her how her glucose level is trending which is very important to her.

For me, the sensors act as my conscience. I'm much more likely to pass on buying candy when I know what it will do to my glucose level.

To get the sensors, you need a doctor's prescription. The sensors last 14 days. If you have an iPhone, you can download a meter app to read the sensor. I don't know if there's a similar Android app. Or you can buy the standalone monitor. The sensors are not cheap. Because she's insulin dependent, Medicare pays for my sister's sensors. My doctor realizes that some people are on strict budgets, so when he recommended that I try them, he said that I could just get one to see, over 14 days, how food and activities affected my glucose levels. After that, he said I could just occasionally use one when I felt that I needed the information again. Because it fits into my budget, I use them all the time. I buy 6 sensors at a time - basically 3 month's worth - at Costco. With my Costco membership and without insurance paying, I paid $228.68 for six sensors in August, so about $38 each.

(If you do get any brand of sensor, double check before you buy it to see if there is an app which you can use instead of buying their dedicated meter.)
