Star Trek had different warp tables over its various iterations, but twice the speed of light would be around warp 1.25.

I always considered Warp 1 = C; Warp 2 = 2C, etc. But I also considered that it might have made sense if Warp 1 = C and Warp 2 = C², etc.

I never looked up to see if Roddenberry had a 'style manual' to ensure consistency.

Back in my younger years, I had a ST tech book. Warp speed was exponential, not linear. (kinda like how we measure earthquakes on the richter scale)

To a point since warp speed is not actually going faster than the speed of light. It generally involves, if I understand correctly, theoretically going around the rule. When you can't break the rule, you go around it. When you can't do that such as with transporters, you compensate, by making a compensator named after that annoying prick who said you can't do that, like Heisenberg.

The real reason for "warp 9.8" in TNG etc was that in the Star trek cartoon they had a linier scale and speeds of "Warp 15" were common. And Gene Roddenberry hated the hell out of it. So he invented a really complicated scale that would always have warp always referred to in a single digit, even though the Enterprise D was supposed to be faster than the Original Enterprise.

Basically warp 10 in that scale was occupying every part in the universe Simultaneously - infinite speed.

Really though I think the effect was to actually hinder give people a sense of the real speeds involved. People don't generally think exponentially.

Only a pissosito would want to go past WARP 10 anyway.
