Finally some justice.
And now get that former district attorney!
And now get that former district attorney!
https://www.ajc.com/news/former-glynn-d ... QAJN3XG5I/Johnson is charged with obstruction of a police officer, which is a misdemeanor. On the day of the Feb. 23, 2020 shooting, the indictment says she allegedly instructed two Glynn County police officers not to arrest Travis McMichael, the man who shot and killed Arbery.
She is also indicted for allegedly violating her oath of office, a felony, for “showing favor and affection” to Greg McMichael, who is Travis McMichael’s father and is also charged in the case. Johnson failed “to treat Ahmaud Arbery and his family fairly and with dignity,” the indictment states.
Johnson, 49, lost her bid for re-election last November after facing sharp criticism and calls for her ouster over the way she handled the Arbery case.
She had been district attorney since 2010 and had faced a number of controversies about her decisions and prosecutorial style. Those included a 2010 fatal police shooting of Caroline Small, an unarmed mother of two. A graphic dashcam video showed a barrage of bullets fired by two Glynn County officers spraying across the windshield of Small’s car. Johnson was accused of favoring the local police and steering a local grand jury that cleared the officers.

I am so glad for these verdicts. I hope the DA who is charged with obstruction also gets handed her ass by a jury. I can't even imagine what Mr Arbery's family suffered with the loss of their son and then the lies being told to them by the DA and others in the justice system. They painted him as a criminal and his shooting as having been justified when it was clearly a modern day lynching.
The McMichaels just couldn't stand it when a police officer told them that the "black man" is not suspected of having stolen anything from the construction site and that he was not even committing trespassing. I had not even heard until the testimony in the trial that they had already been told by a police officer that Arbery was not suspected of any crime. That really shows how deep their hatred really is, after a police officer told them Arbery was not suspected of a crime nor was he committing a trespass. They just couldn't stand to hear that the black man hadn't done anything wrong. I understand why they weren't charged with first degree murder, but I'm pretty well convinced they brought along their guns just hoping something might happen that they could whip up some kind of justification in their minds as a reason to shoot him. I hope the elder McMichael reminds himself every single night how he told his son to "grab your gun and let's go get him".
I hope for a similar outcome in their federal hate crimes trial.

Hateful Candace Owns is being slammed by her fellow black Trump supporter Pastor Scott. She has continually called Arbery a criminal. All she does is post hateful shit about other black people. Finally another black person has had enough.

I forget which talking head on teevee said it, but how amazing is it that you have this huge crowd of mostly black people at the courthouse, cheering on the white prosecutor like she was a rock star.

I didn't watch much of the trial cuz working. Also, I was too emotionally involved. But what I saw of the prosecutor, well, I thought she was great. She was smart and blunt & she didn't take any shit from the killers. Also it helped that the judge wasn't the one in Kenosha.

I'm so glad this went the right way. After that punkass was acquitted in WI, I can't bear to read that thread.

Gov. Kemp's statement was good; as well as can be expected.

I wonder what Greg McMichael was thinking as his son's verdict was being read.

I was thinking the same thing.
I also noted how Bryan looked over at the elder McMichael after hearing his own verdicts. The McMichaels yelled at him to join them in their criminal endeavor and then, ironically, he decided to record the whole thing. It was only after his recording went viral and caused anger and outrage that they were no longer walking free and clear. The McMichaels invited him to join their lynching and he thanked them by providing the video that got the three of them arrested. I bet they spend the rest of their lives blaming each other for their "misfortune". Bryan sure as hell seemed to be shooting an angry look at the elder McMichael after hearing 6 guilty verdicts, including three for felony murder.

Yes, I never knew about that either. And every time the officer would tell McMichael that Arbery had done nothing criminal, McMichael would bring up
"well, what about such and such" only to be told no, the black man has not committed any criminal acts and is not suspected of taking anything from the construction site. The owner of the construction site has personally told this officer that he had video showing a white couple that came in with what appeared to be an empty or mostly empty bag and left with that same bag appearing to be full. They are the ones suspected of stealing the only items known to have been taken from that site. But in the officer's camera you can hear McMichael just not taking no for an answer. He was absolutely not OK with the officer's information that Arbery had committed no crime and was not suspected of committing any crime. That was probably the most disturbing piece of information I got from the trial aside from the actions taken during the chase and killing itself. The fact that McMichael simply could not accept, even from a police officer, that Mr Arbery was not a criminal or suspect.
There's a lot of things that need to change. One specifically? Police brutality.

It hurts to imagine past injustice that didn't have this equalizing force to help correct it.
I never imagined that everyone having a movie camera in their pocket would have this effect.

A small nit to pick… As I understand it, while Georgia has second degree murder, it doesn’t really have first degree murder. Instead, it has malice murder and felony murder, and those usually fall into the definitions other states have for first degree murder.RVInit wrote: ↑Wed Nov 24, 2021 5:41 pm

There are two ways for the state to prove malice: (1) express, meaning that the killing was intentional; or (2) implied, where “all the circumstances of the killing show an abandoned and malignant heart.” (The second one the common law definition of malice). And to prove felony murder they have to prove all of the elements of the underlying felony.
Malice murder and felony murder can both get you the death penalty in Georgia if the prosecution seeks it. Otherwise, the maximum for both is life without parole. Although the mandatory minimum for a first-offense murder is life with parole, they won’t be eligible for parole for 25 years.
