My expectations of US juries have been adjusted (downward) a lot in recent years..

To kill a mocking bird is as relevant today as when it was set.

Roger Stone: convicted by a jury. Paul Manafort: convicted by a jury (despite an insane judge). I could go on.

As I said, depends where the jury is located and who the jurors are.

Kenny the truck thief - not guilty
Bundy’s not guilty

I haven’t yet reached despair at the US court system - but it doesn’t inspire confidence in me.

This is an almost all white jury in Georgia, right?

My hopes are not high. I am expecting to be puking after the verdict comes in. But, I didn't hear the prosecution final closing, she may have wrapped it up. I wish prosecutors tried harder to be more "warm" towards the jury. I know they are supposed to ignore that, but juries are supposed to use the actual evidence to come to their decisions and look at the trash that walked last Friday. What juries are supposed to do and what they actually do are not necessarily the same thing.
There's a lot of things that need to change. One specifically? Police brutality.

I cried a lot when the murder of Ahmed finally was finally exposed. Now I'm avoiding news about the trial - so much racism, led by a defense attorney. Don't have a lot hope for justice....

All three guilty of murder. There is some vestige of justice in this country, especially since this happened in Georgia.

Sorry--updated with more accurate info: Travis McMichael was found guilty on all charges. Gregory McMichael and W.R. Bryan were both convicted of felony murder but acquitted of some other charges. All now face the possibility of life imprisonment without parole.

Not quite.

Travis McMichael: guilty on all counts

Greg McMichael: Guilty on all but one count. I think he was acquitted on "Malice murder"

William "Roddie" Bryan:" Guilty on all counts, exec Malice murder and felony murder.

I thought it took a lot of chutzpah for the defense to argue that, if Arbury had just stopped to talk to them, nothing would have happened. If you were a young black guy, in Georgia, being chased by three white guys with guns, riding in pickup trucks with confederate flags on them, would you have stopped? Would any sane person?

Troo fact: Was just playing a game of Civ 6, minding my own bidness, when I saw an alert on my phone that a verdict had been reached. And my first thought was "Must alt-tab to desktop, open browser window, and see The Fowbow Reaction."

That's how much I love y'all -- you break the spell of the game famous for "just ... one ... more ... turn ... before ... bed."
But the sunshine aye shall light the sky,
As round and round we run;
And the truth shall ever come uppermost,
And justice shall be done.

Just a reminder, each faced the following nine charges:

malice murder
four counts of felony murder
two counts of aggravated assault
false imprisonment
criminal attempt to commit a felony

The son was guilty on all charges, dad on all but malice murder (convicted of eight total), and neighbor on all but malice murder, one of the felony murders, and one of the aggravated assaults (convicted of 6 total). This seems to me a reasonable mix, given each person's actions.

I wonder if the defense attorney does a lot of rape trials? Some of her most egregious statements seem to work in rape trials. :vomit:

Of course there will be appeals. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the defense have to appeal each invidivual count for each individual? This will sit at the appellate level for years.

Off Topic
Meanwhile, that other William Bryan, the one who is responsible for "a great deal of criminal mischief," according to Lt. Cdr. Walter Francis Fitzpatrick, III, Ret. ... the William Bryan who conspired with his BFF Robert Mueller lo these many moons ago, the William Bryan who is far less than marginally responsible for the internationally unknown Madisonville Hoax, you know who I'm talking about, yeah, that guy ... he's still at large. They're calling him the "Teflon Rooster" now, didja know that? Will there never be justice?

Narrator: No, there will never be justice. :violin: :crying:

Each individual will get his own appeal. The content of the appeal will depend on how the appellate defense counsel views the record.

IIRC, Bryan’s attorney made a motion to sever his client’s trial from the others. It was denied. It was pretty late in the game, and I suspect that an appellate court would likely conclude that you don’t get to wait and see how it’s going for your client before you need to file a motion to sever. But if he’s successful on appeal, all of Bryan’s convictions would be set aside and he’s be entitled to a new trial.

Similarly, any successful issue on appeal that affects the fairness of the trial as a whole would result in all of the convictions being set aside. Depending on the issue, it could implicate all the convictions for all the defendants of only some.

Some evidentiary or instructional issues might affect the whole trial or only some of the charges with respect to some of the defendants.

A lot of my clients get convicted on multiple counts, and it is often the case that I don’t have a good argument for at least one of the charges. But if I can get most of it tossed, we can usually get a new sentencing hearing.

But yeah, it’ll take a couple of years, I think.

Governor Kemp's statement on the verdict:

Ahmaud Arbery was the victim of a vigilantism that has no place in Georgia.

"Vigilantism." Because of course it would be racist and divisive to call the killings racist. :torches:
