I remember watching that episode when it first aired. Since we lived in Massachusetts it would be 17 years before I first visited Disneyland when a business trip took me to Los Angeles.

In the '90s, for a year I lived about a mile from Disneyland. In the summer, they have a fireworks show every night, and we could watch from our kitchen table.

I got a little jaded about fireworks. :bag:
Out from under.

The refreshed Jungle Cruise opened Friday! After all the whining from the RWNJs about not changing the Jungle Cruise (what's wrong with a little racism), it's done with new audioanimatronics, and as discussed, starts putting the Adventure Club brand back in play.

Here's the full ride through. Set it at 3:20 with Rope Drop. Before that is the dude in the parking lot & going through the gates & stuff. This shows the huge crowd first. He gets on the first boat through on Opening Day (there are videos of the soft opening days, but this is the first official day). He rides it a second time, shows the merchandising and Dole dessert. Terry the Skipper is cute. :P The second time the boat is called the Congo Queen, which is a great choice for a Fogbow Username. The Skipper on his second ridethrough reminded me of the awesome Doc Conspiracy, did he move to Disneyland?

For reference, here's the old version:

In a remarkable coincidence, Jungle Cruise the movie with The Rock opens July 30! Seems like Dwayne had a few drinks before shooting his intro

Since this is a Jungle post: This is the song I always think of Foggy singing (it's a big compliment). Yes, he's a rooster, but for this scene, he's in a bear costume. I joined in as Mowgli :P

That's a shot of the upper right piece of casing you can see in the photo of "Mickey and the Magician," a recently added attraction at Disneyland Paris. 4" x 16", in Basswood. We made the whole set, 12 pieces, from their CNC-produced patterns.

Didn't get to mention how incredibly cool that was, Roadscholar, love photos like that and would be awesome to see more! :lovestruck:

Boo to this, it's going to make a caste system of those who can pay. Guess it'll work but FastPass was a fine feature, it's already a fortune to go to the parks.
To Skip the Line at Disney, Get Ready to Pay a Genie
For the first time, line-skipping privileges at Walt Disney World in Florida will cost $15 per person, an added cost for what is already an expensive destination.
Disney is introducing a new digital tool called Disney Genie to help visitors navigate Disneyland and Disney World.
By Brooks Barnes Aug. 18, 2021 Updated 4:56 p.m. ET

Walt Disney World in Florida is permanently retiring its free, line-skipping FastPass system and for the first time will charge $15 a person for the privilege, opening up a potentially colossal new revenue stream. Before the pandemic, the No. 1 theme park at the resort, the Magic Kingdom, attracted 21 million visitors annually. Disney World introduced FastPass in 1999. The decision to retire that offering and join theme parks like Universal Orlando and Seaworld Orlando in charging for speedier access to rides reflects the era: Consumers have become increasingly accustomed to paying surcharges for special access and perks, many of which used to be included in the base price. The airlines have led the stratification.

For most people, Disney vacations are already formidably expensive — entry to one park for one day can easily approach $500 for a family of four. But the company has long signaled that Disney World would eventually charge for what it is now calling Lightning Lane access to rides. That may minimize grumbling. Disneyland in California eliminated FastPass in 2017 and began charging $20 for a perk called MaxPass; after the initial displeasure wore off, MaxPass became popular. Disney World and Disneyland will now offer the same line-skipping options, which the company unveiled on Wednesday as part of a broad new digital navigation tool. Called Disney Genie, the free service creates personalized itineraries for visitors based on their selected preferences. You say you like princesses? Head directly to Fantasyland and ride Journey of the Little Mermaid, which currently has a short wait, and then perhaps have an early lunch with Belle at the Be Our Guest restaurant. If you change your plans on the fly (or park conditions change) the service will update with a revised itinerary, much like the way GPS apps reroute as people drive.
***
Disney Genie’s itinerary function will be free. It will also integrate other planning features, including mobile food ordering. For the first time, visitors will be shown both current ride wait times and a wait-time forecast — better hurry to Splash Mountain because the line is only expected to grow, or vice versa. Every ride at the resorts will continue to have a traditional standby queue. For those willing to pay $15 per person at Disney World and $20 per person at Disneyland, there will be Genie+. The upgrade, charged per day, allows visitors to choose the next available time to use the Lightning Lane at a variety of rides, including classics like the Haunted Mansion and newer favorites like Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run. One of these selections can be made at a time, with the ultimate number of fast boardings that people can squeeze into a day depending on length of stay and overall attendance. (In other words, no stockpiling.)

Someone mentioned Family guy making a joke about Walt Disney being frozen. Sadly, despite rumours to the contrary, Walt Disney was Cremated. Which normally puts a stop to being frozen.

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/suspended-animation/
Despite the persistent rumors, available documentation indicates that Walt Disney was in fact cremated. Although Disney’s preferences regarding the disposal of his body are not public record (instructions or provisions for his funeral and burial were not included in his will), other publicly-available material is entirely consistent with the claim that he was cremated:

o Walt Disney publicly stated — ten years before his death — that he wished not to have a funeral.

o Disney family members have confirmed that cremation was Walt’s wish.

o Disney’s death certificate shows that he was cremated two days after his death. The name, license number, and signature of the enbalmer appearing on the death certificate are those of a real enbalmer who was employed at the Forest Lawn mortuary at the time.

o A marked burial plot for Walt Disney (and other family members) can be found at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale (the logical resting grounds for someone whose cremation was handled by Forest Lawn’s mortuary), and court papers indicate that the Disney estate paid $40,000 to Forest Lawn for interment property.

Nothing wrong with rabbits, but B'rer Rabbit leads back to Song of the South and before everyone starts saying 'nope', it's certainly associated in my mind.

Somebody got mad on Twitter about that, bringing up Song of the South and Brer Rabbit. The thing is, the ride never once mentions Song of the South, and Uncle Remus isn't in it. While yeah, Brer Rabbit & Brer Bear are from the story, what kid knows about that? We just love the rabbit on the ride (but we love rabbits in general, rabbits should be on every ride). Not asking for Brer Rabbit, just a rabbit. Or a wiener dog in a bunny costume. Maybe. Not backing down  :cantlook:

For the weekend, here's a look at our favorite trippy Disney ride from the 60's, Adventure Thru Inner Space. This 30-minute docu is great fun and explains how Monsanto got involved and used many World's Fair elements to create it. And the cast members' costumes were made of... polyester, a Monsanto product. Of course, Monsanto also made Agent Orange (along with Dow Chemical, who got most of the blame).

It also explains why this dark ride was a teenager favorite and they had to first make it a C ticket attraction (originally one of the few rides in the park that didn't need a ticket), then sped it up (which just made it more of a challenge). Those darn kids!

Defunctland: The History of Disneyland's Adventure Thru Inner Space.

Paul Friess, the Ghost Host of the Haunted Mansion, does the narration and the soundtrack is equally trippy.

Transcript
13:51 Claude Coats plans for the dark ride were unlike any ever created. The majority of the ride would
13:56 be in pitch black darkness, with only certain props and shapes illuminated throughout the’
14:00 journey, an experiment in minimalism. Coates' son Alan would later say “it was the psychedelic ‘60s
14:07 after all, a real ‘head trip’ they used to say.” This experience was exemplified by the
14:11 ride’s music, composed by musician Buddy Baker. In May of 1967, Baker conducted an orchestra,
14:18 performing 47 different, unusual scores. Baker attempted to add a unique musical experience that
14:24 would reflect the strangeness of the ride’s story, with unexpected instruments that represented each
14:28 part of the cell. A more standard Disney song would be featured in the ride, written by the
14:33 famous songwriting duo The Sherman Brothers. This theme was titled Miracles from Molecules.

Disney announces 7,000 layoffs while teasing Toy Story and Frozen sequels
Cuts represent an estimated 3.6% of Disney’s global workforce in effort to save $5.5bn in costs and follow major job losses at other top US companies

Sian Cain and agencies
Wed 8 Feb 2023 23.51 GMT

Disney has announced a sweeping corporate restructuring that will result in 7,000 people losing their jobs as part of an effort to achieve US$5.5bn (£4.5bn, A$7.9bn) in cost savings, at the same time as revealing plans for sequels to Toy Story and Frozen.

The layoffs represent an estimated 3.6% of Disney’s global workforce and come after major job cuts at other US giants including Alphabet, Amazon, Ford and Meta.

The chief executive, Bob Iger, outlined the cost-cutting plan to investors during the company’s fiscal first-quarter earnings call, in which Disney net income came in at $1.28bn, below analyst estimates of $1.43bn.

On the same call, Iger also teased future sequels for Toy Story, Frozen and Zootopia, telling investors the upcoming films showed how “we are leaning into our unrivaled brands” and stressed the importance of franchises.

No further detail was given on the new films. There have been four Toy Story films since 1995, and a spin-off, Lightyear, which was mildly received by both audiences and critics. Frozen and Frozen II have each earned more than $1bn at the box office, as did Zootopia in 2016, with a sequel expected ever since.

Disney, which is under pressure to turn a profit from its global streaming business, said it would reorganize into three segments: an entertainment unit that encompasses film, television and streaming; a sports-focused ESPN unit; and Disney parks, experiences and products.

The restructuring would streamline operations, making its business more efficient, and reduce costs, the company said.

Iger really comes off as an out-of-touch jerkwad in this clip.
Qasim Rashid, Esq. @QasimRashid wrote: Disney CEO Bob Iger—who makes $27M/year—complains that writers & actors aren't realistic in their demands, refuses to answer what’s unrealistic, & admits a strike will be devastating.

Yes—that’s how strikes work. That’s why they’re effective.

Pay Workers
An interesting technological tidbit I learned on NPR- actors used to make 2-3 weeks pay as extras in crowd scenes and whatnot. Now, instead, they bring in an actor, scan them, and then do the crowds digitally. The actor only gets one day pay for that.

There is something drastically wrong when the CEO makes more in a day than a writer makes in a year.
Tyler Evans @tylerevansokay wrote: Hollywood writers, on average, are paid $69,510 a year.

Bob Iger is paid $74,175 a DAY.

That is "very disturbing" to me, Bob.

Copyright for original Mickey Mouse persona to run out 1 January 2024
Steamboat Willie, created by Walt Disney, to enter public domain after 95 years – taking earliest Minnie with him

Richard Luscombe in Miami
Thu 28 Dec 2023 16.45 CET

It’s been a challenging centenary year for Disney, and the world’s largest and most prominent entertainment company is having to end it with an emotional “so long!” to its oldest friend, Mickey Mouse.

To be clear, it’s not the Mickey Mouse, iconic centerpiece of countless elementary school lunch bags, T-shirts and baseball caps, who is leaving the happiest place on earth when his copyright protection expires on 1 January.

Rather, it’s Mickey’s original Steamboat Willie persona, a rat-like figure with spindly legs created by Walt Disney for the groundbreaking 1928 movie of the same name, who is entering the public domain after 95 years in the Disney nest. His shipmate in the animated short, the earliest version of Minnie, is joining him.

The loss of exclusive rights to the historically important first draft of a character who went on to capture the hearts of millions worldwide will cut deep, as proven by the decades of legal maneuvers the company made to try to preserve them.

The episode is also reflective of the turbulent waters in which Disney currently finds itself, including a bruising culture war fight with Florida’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, over LGBTQ+ rights, and strong financial headwinds from its loss-making streaming service Disney+, as well as a worrying series of movie flops.

“I always say any of us going past 100 years will usually have issues, but this whole original Mickey Mouse thing is something to think about as we look at Disney going into its second century with a good deal of troubles,” said Robert Thompson, a trustee professor of television, radio and film, and founding director of the Bleier center for television and popular culture at Syracuse University.

“Disney has a lot of things to worry about right now, and the expiration of Steamboat Willie’s Mickey Mouse probably shouldn’t be on the top of their list. The original Mickey isn’t the one we all think of and have on our T-shirts or pillowcases up in the attic someplace.

“Yet, symbolically of course, copyright is important to Disney and it has been very careful about their copyrights to the extent that laws have changed to protect them. This is the only place I know that some obscure high school in the middle of nowhere can put on The Lion King and the Disney copyright people show up.”
