Haaland announces new Indigenous Missing & Murdered Unit

Haaland, herself a Laguna Pueblo woman who made history as the first Native American Cabinet secretary, stated the unit will expand on the already existing Operation Lady Justice task force. Both will be housed within the Bureau of Indian Affairs of Justice Services, and the bureau will provide support to the new unit.

“Violence against Indigenous peoples is a crisis that has been underfunded for decades. Far too often, murders and missing persons cases in Indian country go unsolved and unaddressed, leaving families and communities devastated,” Haaland said in a news release. “The new MMU unit will provide the resources and leadership to prioritize these cases and coordinate resources to hold people accountable, keep our communities safe, and provide closure for families.”

The Jingle Dress Project has been on the road to bring greater awareness. I learned about them from the Natives React YouTube channel.

Authorities in El Salvador are excavating a clandestine cemetery at the house of a former detective which is believed to contain as many as 40 bodies – most of them thought to be women.

The remains of at least 24 people have been recovered so far at the house in the municipality of Chalchuapa, about 48 miles (78km) north-west of the capital, San Salvador. Exhuming the bodies could take another month, officials said.

The search began after the former officer, Hugo Ernesto Osorio Chávez, 51, was detained earlier this month for killing a woman and her daughter. The suspect, who had previously been investigated for sex crimes, confessed to killing the two.

But when forensic teams searched his house, they discovered at least seven pits containing bodies, some of which may have been buried as long as two years ago.

Prosecutors have issued arrest warrants for nine other suspects who may have acted as accomplices.

The institutionalized theft of babies from unwed mothers-to-be began in the 1950s, when it was considered the ideal solution to two pressing social issues.
In the US, pregnant unmarried girls and women were sent to institutions during their pregnancies. They would give birth, then never see their babies. Unbeknownst to them, some of them were also sterilized.

This would be an interesting topic. Quite a few years ago I saw the movie Rabbit Proof Fence. It's a sort of loose telling of the story of three aboriginal girls who were removed from their families in Jigalong (Australia) as part of the government's official policy of breeding aboriginal blood out of "half caste" children. At the end of the movie, we are introduced to the real life Mollie and Daisy, who, along with their cousin Gracie had escaped from the relocation /indoctrination camp. Gracie was captured during their long journey back to Jigalong and they never saw her again. Later in life, Mollie and her two children were captured again. Mollie managed to escape with only one of her children and made the long (1500 mile!!) trek back home once again, as she had done as a child. She never saw her other daughter again. It's a powerful movie. Kenneth Branagh once again shows how wonderfully he plays bad guys. He plays the role of the "Protector" of Aborigines. The Aborigine people referred to him as Mr Devil, a clever play on his real name, Mr Neville.
There's a lot of things that need to change. One specifically? Police brutality.

Finkbonner’s disappearance renewed conversations around which missing-person cases attract national attention. After the body of 22-year-old Gabby Petito was found following a closely watched search effort, some began pointing out racial disparities at play. Families of color spoke out on the noticeably lower level of interest when their loved ones went missing.

Between 2011 and 2020, at least 710 Indigenous people were reported missing in Wyoming, the same state where Petito was found.

When I learned about the extreme difference in handling missing indigenous people and people of color and the handling of missing whites, I turned off tv out of respect for those missing people when Petito was mentioned. I didn't know what to do about it, but now I've decided to email CNN & MSNBC about the double standard. Doubt anyone will see it, but I know I have to do something. It's a start at least.

Towards the end of the search, or immediately after her body was found, there was some soul searching on MSNBC about the missing White girl syndrome. It bothered me, too, so I didn't watch enough much of it. And I get tired of the message to women about the dangers men pose, while rarely getting the message young men are receiving.

Edited for correction. :oopsy:

The disproportionately high rates of missing and murdered Indigenous people is a nationwide crisis, and experts say Montana is an epicenter. Indigenous people in Montana are four times more likely to go missing than non-Native people, according to a state Department of Justice report. As of Sept. 15, Indigenous people accounted for 31% of the state's active missing persons population, though they comprise about 6.7% of Montana's population.

In the eight days between when Petito's family reported her missing on Sept. 11 and when Petito's remains were found on Sept. 19, three Indigenous people — Sterling Prinze Redstar, Markie Shea Williams and Cloelle Buck Elk — were reported missing in Montana.

“ For perspective, Simpson said that between 2011 and 2021, nearly 700 Indigenous women have gone missing in the same area that Petito went missing. Nationally, there are 5,700 unsolved missing Indigenous person cases.”

Did anyone listen to this?

No, Tucson is not the South. Tucson is the West.

" However, no research has been done on rates of such violence among American Indian and Alaska Native women living in urban areas despite the fact that approximately 71% of American Indian and Alaska Natives live in urban areas."

There are far more (and larger) reservations in the western United States, which makes it a bit easier to do the research.

The Trail of Tears made sure of that.

https://www.britannica.com
Trail of Tears
United States history

Trail of Tears, in U.S. history, the forced relocation during the 1830s of Eastern Woodlands Indians of the Southeast region of the United States (including Cherokee, Creek, Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Seminole, among other nations) to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River. Estimates based on tribal and military records suggest that approximately 100,000 indigenous people were forced from their homes during that period, which is sometimes known as the removal era, and that some 15,000 died during the journey west. The term Trail of Tears invokes the collective suffering those people experienced, although it is most commonly used in reference to the removal experiences of the Southeast Indians generally and the Cherokee nation specifically. The physical trail consisted of several overland routes and one main water route and, by passage of the Omnibus Public Lands Management Act in 2009, stretched some 5,045 miles (about 8,120 km) across portions of nine states (Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Tennessee).
