Gregg wrote: Tue Jan 31, 2023 7:09 pm But he doesn't, really.

He has big press conferences where he unveils his new Election Police, but when they go have dramatic raids and arrest 20 people for election fraud (out of what, 10 million?) the cases all get tossed out of court. He gets the Leg to dissolve Reedy Creek, and says no one is going to have to pick up the tab for the few billion that Disney currently pays but the State is actually legally responsible for. Of course, he's won re-election so now they're trying to find a way to save face and still let Disney run all that stuff because fact is, Disney is damn good at it and the people in the two counties affected are gonna be a little pissed when the property tax doubles and the roads aren't getting fixed anymore. Not gonna be his problem, so he really doesn't care.

That's what's he's good at, theater. Actual policy, not so much.
Here's an update on Reedy Creek -

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis moves to install state control over Disney’s land
Lawmakers are moving forward with plans that would give the state more control over the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which Gov. Ron DeSantis targeted last year after the Walt Disney Co. criticized a controversial education law.

A notice posted Friday by the Legislature on Osceola County’s website outlined potential changes that might keep the framework of the special district but make a series of changes such as the state dictating who would run the district. Also, the changes would make clear that the district’s debt could not be transferred to nearby local governments, while raising the possibility of a new name for Reedy Creek.

Yes, it matters little who prevails in the contest, inasmuch as both contestants are constantly reprehensible. The critical, all-important thing is the struggle.

In the modern world, the struggle is an art form and an engineering marvel. See the struggle, be the struggle. The struggle is beautiful and perfect and perfectly done. The struggle is timeless and effervescent. All hail the struggle, is what. Y'all can struggle to the death. Or just have fun with it, your choice.

Now snap your fingers and tap your feet, maybe you got a little something going on, ya think?

Okay, Trump says he has to sit down to tap his feet, you good with that, Governor?

Okay, now Trump says he can't snap his fingers but he can sort of make fists and pretend to pump them in time with the music.

No, Governor DeSantis, he's not actually dancing, so you don't get to dance either.

After heavy criticism from Gov. Ron DeSantis, the College Board released on Wednesday an official curriculum for its new Advanced Placement course in African American Studies — stripped of much of the subject matter that had angered the governor and other conservatives.

The College Board purged the names of many Black writers and scholars associated with critical race theory, the queer experience and Black feminism. It ushered out some politically fraught topics, like Black Lives Matter, from the formal curriculum.

And it added something new: “Black conservatism” is now offered as an idea for a research project.

When it announced the A.P. course in August, the College Board clearly believed it was providing a class whose time had come, and it was celebrated by eminent scholars like Henry Louis Gates Jr. of Harvard as an affirmation of the importance of African American studies. But the course, which is meant to be for all students of diverse backgrounds, quickly ran into a political buzz saw after an early draft leaked to conservative publications like The Florida Standard and National Review.
This is very disturbing.

Desantis outlines the framework for his budget today, including permanent ban on sales tax for gas stoves. Only people who buy electric stoves will pay tax: “They want your gas stove, and we’re not gonna let that happen.”

Oh FFS, that is just amazingly fucking stupid. Absolute bullshit. NO ONE IS COMING TO TAKE YOUR GAS STOVES AWAY - and if gas stoves WERE going to be taken out for SAFETY reasons, who is or isn't paying sales tax WONT MAKE A FUCKING BIT OF DIFFERENCE!

It's one thing to be against the removal and addition of gas stoves for health reasons, it's a whole 'nother thing to actively encourage their use by eliminating the tax on them while keeping the tax on electric ones. He's just an evil SOB intent on destroying and harming his constituents, whether that be through covid regulations, not allowing Black studies, or removing all books from school libraries.

Oh good grief.

The majority of south Florida does not have residential natural gas service (it doesn't get cold enough to warrant running the utility lines for heating). Commercial districts, yes -- restaurants. I'd love a gas stove, but it is not happening.

So I will be penalized for a replacement stove with sales tax because there is no gas service.

Thanks.

From Florida children with asthma least impacted by gas stoves -
According to a 2020 report by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, only 8% of homes in Florida use gas stoves; 92% use electric.

Parents, is it normal to ask such an intrusive question? I get that a school would want disclosure of a health condition that they'd need to be aware of in case of emergency, like, say, anaphylactic reactions to bee stings or peanut butter, but a kid's menstrual cycles?

Its a medical from. Doctors need to know this information.

As I've said the issue is that it is a digital form that the school POTENTIALLY could read when they collect the information for the doctor.

YOUR doctor needs to know that information, not the school district if you don't choose to share it. They could do what most states do, require a doctor examination where the doctor gives a thumbs up or a thumbs down. The details of why aren't anybody's business but the patient's.

As far as the digital issue, the company that will store it digitally is vulnerable to subpoenas. In Florida's current abortion laws, that could be a Really Bad Thing for the state to get ahold of. Potentially.

And as far as what schools could potentially read, that's what this whole thing is about. It makes the school districts the custodians of the records.

While this is all right, it is the last point: "It makes the school districts the custodians of the records." that should really send shivers down your spine. Someone having custody of personal medical records -- likely without oversight for HIPPA compliance -- is a flying leap down a slippery slope in my opinion.

I get that some medical info should be shared with school officials and teachers. Allergies, including food and other. Conditions such as Type-I diabetes. (some teachers keep small packs of Skittles or M&Ms in their desk for if a student is crashing).

But menstrual cycle schedule? Sorry, only a pedo would want that info.

Snopes disagrees with you all.

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/flori ... l-periods/
The ongoing controversy began in the fall of 2022. Florida student athletes, in general, are required to answer dozens of questions on a form before their doctors clear them for practice or play. These questions have to do with physical fitness, and aim to prevent injuries.

:snippity:

In Florida, these written forms with students' medical information are submitted to school officials, contrary to a number of other states where only a doctor's signature is required to clear an athlete for play. While period information is important for doctors to know as it affects an athlete's physical health, some parents and medical professionals raised red flags with the questioning, when, according to an October 2022 Palm Beach Post investigation, a number of school districts shifted the forms to a digital platform.
So having a doctor have access to menstrual info is not a controversial opinion

Snopes does not mention this aspect as its fairly obvious, but the school could be liable if someone was allowed to competed under their name and was unhealthy for some reason. So ya, a school doctor should have access to medical information imo. In any case, as I said, its the privacy concerns regarding digital formats that was the actual issue here.

Again, that isn't how it is usually done.
The student's doctor signs a form declaring the student is fit to compete. In cases where there is something that the school needs to know, that is noted on the form.
It's been this way since *I* was in high school. Which was a long time ago.
There is no reason for a 'school doctor' to enter into the discussion, and I suspect that the 'school doctor' does not care about this information.

HIPAA applies too also. So everyone that touches that information, down to the admins or teachers that collect the forms, has to take HIPAA training and stay current.

That is my thinking. What is a "school doctor" anyway? In primary schools there may be a nurse. But a "doctor"? I don't think so $$$. (unless in college sports molesting athletes -- Gym Jordan, we still see your complicity)

I can imagine that there are a number of medical issues which may affect a female's menstrual cycles. No one other than a girl's doctor or parents should have access to that information. However, without knowing about the existence of these other factors, a school official could certainly make a wrong assumption about that girl's health based just on viewing her menstrual cycle. Or, even just as bad, figure out that there are other medical issues which are no one else's business.
