‘Conspiracy nuts’: DeSantis is in the hot seat after his aide gets caught pushing anti-Semitic theory
Alex Henderson
November 17, 2021
Long before anti-Semitic conspiracy theorists became obsessed with billionaire Democrat George Soros, they were obsessing over the Rothschild family and their firm Rothschild & Co. — which has been around since 1810. Christina Pushaw, a spokesperson for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, recently claimed that the Rothschilds played a role in the launch of a new COVID-19 vaccine passport system in the country Georgia. Pushaw had a playful, quirky tone, but journalist Jonathan Chait, in an article published by New York Magazine this week, stresses that the comment was nonetheless offensive.
On Twitter, Pushaw posted, "Georgia decided to enact a 'Green Pass' system (biomedical security state). Immediately after that, the Rothschilds show up to address the attractive investment environment in Georgia (lol). No weird conspiracy stuff here!"
Chait points out that Pushaw misrepresented what actually happened in Georgia.
"First of all, the timing is completely wrong," Chait explains. "Georgia did not announce its green-pass system 'immediately' after meeting with the Rothschilds. The Rothschild meeting occurred five months ago."
Chait continues, "Second, many countries have implemented COVID pass systems. A handful of Asian countries, as well as Europe and, um, Israel, are setting up passport systems that will allow people to gather in public indoor spaces. DeSantis and his spokespeople are furious about this because they believe people who refuse vaccinations should not be denied any privileges, either by a government or a private company. Indeed, this has become DeSantis' defining agenda."
The journalist points out that Pushaw is "happy to" pander to the "right-wing conspiracy theorists" who are "an important part of DeSantis' power base."

DeSantis moves to raise a FL army under his control.
I'm sure nothing could go wrong with that.

DeSantis said the proposed unit would "not be encumbered by the federal government," adding that this force would give him "the flexibility and the ability needed to respond to events in our state in the most effective way possible."
DeSantis is asking for $3.5 million from the state legislature to establish the unit.

WTAF?
I'm pretty sure that just down the street 150,000 people had a pretty involved argument about that. Surely, surely, there is some law against the states raising military forces outside the National Guard.

Will they be issued with black or brown shirts?
Re: Ron DeSantis
Civilian state guards are not uncommon, there are apparently 20-ish of them in existence.

This might be brilliant.

Joy Reid of MSNBC was speculating this might have something to do with his opposition to vaccination and the mandate for National Guardsmen to get one, but she wasn't sure if there was any connection.

You don't need religion to have morals. If you can't determine right from wrong then you lack empathy, not religion.

This is very disturbing. What is it he wants to order of "his" militia?

Re: Ron DeSantis
Eh, I think he is just trying to play up the 'look how horrible the (biden) government is for requiring vaccination, we will provide a home for all those disgraced soldiers! He probably has no plans for the guard itself other than existing.

University of Florida researchers pressured to destroy COVID-19 data, told not to criticize DeSantis: report
BY SARAKSHI RAI
Researchers at the University of Florida allegedly felt pressured to delete COVID-19 data while working on a study for an undisclosed state entity, according to a report released on Monday by the Faculty Senate committee.
The report stated that staff felt "external pressure to destroy" data and "barriers to accessing and analyzing" data in a timely manner.
The document added that staff said there were "barriers to publication of scientific research which inhibited the ability of faculty to contribute scientific findings during a world-wide pandemic."
Other challenges reported to the committee included "palpable reticence and even fear on the part of faculty to speak up on these issues." In addition, faculty "often engaged in self-censorship and chose not to 'rock the boat' for fear of retaliation," according to the report.
University of Florida employees were reportedly told "not to criticize the Governor of Florida [Republican Ron DeSantis] or UF policies related to COVID-19 in media interactions."
However, the Faculty Senate committee said that they "did not have the resources or the time to fully investigate these reports or their legal and policy implications. Faculty did express discontent about political interference with our mission, that academic freedom is under attack, and that we will likely lose faculty as a result."

I used to know a guy who went by a variant of 'Tek' in the UF BBSing community in the early 90s, actually. We both ran BBSes in a shared mini-network of similar theme and some meta-RP in our fora. But I've been assuming you're not him.

"Private right of action" to sue if they think their kids are being taught critical race theory? I'm sure nothing could go wrong with that.

The boogeyman that keeps on giving, I guess. When CRT was banned in classrooms this summer, all Central Florida school districts told WESH 2 News that they don't teach critical race theory anyway.
