Man in Van Surrounded by SWAT in Torrance Strip Mall Parking Lot is Dead, Officials Say

https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/loca ... e/3078719/
The man inside a white cargo van that was searched by law enforcement in Torrance in connection with a deadly mass shooting is dead, several law enforcement sources tell NBC News.

Armored SWAT vehicles and law enforcement SUVs surrounded the white cargo van Sunday morning at a parking lot across from the Del Amo mall in Torrance, as authorities searched for a gunman who opened fire at a Monterey Park dance studio, killing 10 people and leaving 10 wounded.

The van, located in a parking lot near Del Amo Fashion Center, matched descriptions of a vehicle sought in connection with the shooting about 30 miles to the northeast in the San Gabriel Valley community of Monterey Park and another incident in nearby Alhambra. Authorities did not immediately confirm whether the van is the same one witnesses said left the scene in Alhambra.

The van was blocked in front and behind between two armored SWAT vehicles in the mall parking lot. A van window appeared the have shattered.

A man appeared to be motionless, slumped over the steering wheel of the van.

About an hour after the vehicle was surrounded by officers, members of a SWAT unit smashed a passenger's side window and entered the van at about 1 p.m.

Monterey Park shooting suspect, 72, found dead of self-inflicted gunshot
Motive for attack remains unclear as police identify gunman who killed at least 10 people at LA-area dance studio

Lois Beckett in Los Angeles
Mon 23 Jan 2023 12.11 GMT

The suspect in a deadly mass shooting at a southern California dance studio on Saturday night died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Sunday morning.

The motive for the attack, which left 10 people dead and at least 10 injured, is still under investigation, law enforcement officials said at a press briefing on Sunday evening.

Officials have identified the shooter as as Huu Can Tran, a 72-year-old Asian man.
:snippity:
At Sunday’s press briefing, Sheriff Robert Luna and local politicians praised the heroism of the two community members who he said took away the suspect’s gun at that second scene, possibly preventing another tragedy. “This could have been much worse,” Luna said.

The Tsay family, who run the Lai Lai Ballroom and Studio in Alhambra, said in fact that only one person disarmed the gunman: 26-year-old Brandon Tsay, a computer coder who works at the ticket office a few days a week and was in the office off the lobby when the gunman entered the building.
:snippity:
Brandon’s older sister, Brenda, who runs the business, told the paper that security camera footage showed a prolonged struggle between Brandon and the gunman. “He kept coming at him, he really wanted the gun back,” she said of the gunman.
:snippity:
Two weapons have been officially identified so far, including a handgun with a high-capacity ammunition magazine, which allows a shooter to fire more rounds without pausing to reload. The weapon recovered from Alhambra location was described as magazine-fed semiautomatic assault pistol with a high-capacity magazine attached, a weapon that may be illegal in California, Luna said.

New reports I've seen say that one of the two counts against Baldwin to be charged in the alternative, involuntary manslaughter by a lawful act, is subject to a firearm sentencing enhancement carrying a mandatory 5-year sentence. That is serious! It made me curious about it.

From what I can determine (for example, here), the enhancement for using a firearm in commission of a felony had been only one year for first felony offense up until earlier this year. That was changed with House Bill 68, signed March of 2022, touted as a bipartisan package of initiatives to combat crime and invest in public safety. One of the things it did was add a five-year mandatory sentence addition for discharging a firearm in commission of a felony. (Description here, which links to source of bill.)

Curious, should this arise, would Baldwin would have a possible issue about ex post facto changes to sentencing enhancements?

The other alternative charged is involuntary manslaughter through [misdemeanor] negligent use of a deadly weapon. I gather that because that crime includes the use of a firearm in its definition, it is not subject to enhancement. Another question I have is how Baldwin could in these circumstances wind up guilty of IM through lawful act, which requires criminal negligence, but NOT be guilty of IM through negligent use of a deadly weapon.

Anderson Cooper has the hero of the Monterey Park shootings on air right now, and I think NBC Nightly News also has one coming up tonight. What an amazing young man to step up to the plate and save lives. CNN is showing new video I haven't seen before of the perp and the gun. I don't know firearms, but that looks like it's been modified somehow.
Edit: Can't resist noting that this time it was a good guy WITHOUT a gun who saved the day.

Seven people were shot to death on Monday afternoon in San Mateo County, Calif., the sheriff’s office said, the second mass shooting in the state in three days.

The shooting happened around 2:20 p.m. local time at two separate locations near Highway 92 and the Half Moon Bay city limits, about 30 miles south of San Francisco, the authorities said. Another person was transported to Stanford Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

A suspect, Zhao Chunli, 67, of Half Moon Bay, was found in his car in the parking lot of a sheriff’s office substation in Half Moon Bay, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said.

“Chunli was taken into custody without incident and the weapon was located in his vehicle,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “There is no current outstanding threat to the community.”

More info about Half Moon Bay
The sheriff's office said shortly after discovering those five victims, deputies found three more victims — all dead — at a nearby location.

Deputies identified 67-year-old Zhao Chunli of Half Moon Bay as the suspected gunman, the sheriff's office said. At 4:40 p.m., over 2 hours after the report of the shooting, deputies found Chunli in his vehicle in the parking lot of the Half Moon Bay Substation. He was arrested there, and deputies found the weapon used in the shootings.

NBC affiliate KNTV reports that the victims were Chinese farmworkers, according to city council member Debbie Ruddock.

What we know: Shooting suspect is an 18yo in custody and has been charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. It is believed to be a gang rivalry. The staff member, who remains in critical condition, is the founder of the nonprofit education center Starts Right Here for at-risk teens, tried to restrain and remove the shooter from the facility.

The shooter cut off his GPS ankle monitor shortly before the shooting. (he was already facing weapons charges)

The two students who died were 18 and 16.

I,sw n article lst night (but don't have the link) nothing that it's interesting that both the Monterey Bay and San Mateo shootings appear to have been committed by older (60s and 70s) Aisen men right at the Lunar New Year. I did NOT get the feeling they were trying to imply a connection, just noting a coincidence.

At least three people were fatally shot in an apparently random attack at a convenience store in Yakima, Washington, early Tuesday morning, setting off a manhunt after the gunman ran across the street and escaped in a stolen vehicle, the authorities said.

Walmart shooting suspect to plead guilty to federal charges

https://apnews.com/article/walmart-shoo ... 6b152f22ce
The man accused of killing nearly two dozen people in a racist attack at an El Paso Walmart plans to plead guilty to federal charges in the case, according to court records filed days after the federal government said it wouldn’t seek the death penalty in the case.

Patrick Crusius is still charged in state court with capital murder and could still face the death penalty in Texas if convicted in the 2019 mass shooting that killed 23 people.

In a court filing Saturday, defense attorneys asked for a hearing to be set so Crusius could plead guilty to federal charges. He was charged with federal hate crimes and firearms violations.

U.S. District Judge David Guaderrama, in an order Monday, set the hearing for Feb. 8 in El Paso.

It's three syllable word with an assumed fourth syllable when your tongue transitions from the L sound to the M sound.

Emphasis is on the first syllable vowel U sound with an abrupt termination on the H with a brief silence before moving to the second syllable.
