This is surprising... how soon will Mark be thrown out of the GOP?

Mark Begich @MarkBegich 1h
Mary Peltola's victory is a clear message from AK voters that they will not compromise their values or their rights at the ballot box. Mary is a pro-choice, pro-fish, common sense leader who knows what it takes to protect and create AK jobs. On to November!

And not third-place Nick Begich, a Republican.

* * *

So there were around 55k eliminated votes. Of those, Palin got around 28k (51%); Peltota around 17k (31%); and nobody got around 10k (18%).

Peltota won, roughly 91k-86k.

In other words, the nobody voters sunk Palin.

My theory is House Republicans need a handful of village idiots whose role is to say and do stupid stuff (Boebert, Greene, Gaetz, et. al.). They lost Cawthorn. Was Palin to be his replacement? Surely she doesn't need the salary, although I don't know how much the seat is worth to lobbyists.

Regardless of the outcome, I wonder what people think about the “ranked choice” voting tabulation process:
What is Ranked Choice Voting?
Ranked Choice Voting allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference. In the 2020 general election,
voters approved an initiative to establish a Ranked Choice Voting general election system.

How does Ranked Choice Voting work?
In each race, voters will rank their choices in order of preference. Votes are counted in rounds.
This is what happens:

Round One:
The Division counts all 1st choices. If a candidate gets 50% + 1 vote in round one, that candidate wins and the counting stops.
If not, counting goes to Round Two.

Round Two (and beyond):
The candidate with the fewest votes gets eliminated. If you voted for that candidate, your vote goes to your next choice
and you still have a say in who wins.
If your first choice candidate was not eliminated, your vote stays with them. Votes are counted again.

This keeps happening in rounds until two candidates are left and the one with the most votes wins.

What happens if I only vote for one candidate?
Your vote is counted in round one and your vote stays with your candidate throughout tabulation.

Is there a benefit of ranking multiple choices?
Yes. By ranking multiple candidates, you can still have a voice in who gets elected even if your top choice does not win.
Ranking multiple candidates ensures your vote will go toward your second. third, fourth, or fifth coice
if your top choice is eliminated, giving you more voice in who wins.

It seemed super complicated. Hearing that the idea is to push candidates to moderate and be collegial since they want to be the second choice of another candidate's voters. Alaska voters in 2020 put it in place so let's see how it works for the general election. Who else does this? California does the jungle primary but that's not the same, right?

In California's jungle primary,* all candidates are on the same ballot, and the top two advance to the general election. Some California local jurisdictions have authorized ranked-choice voting, like for mayors and stuff.

Maine and Alaska allow ranked-choice voting at the presidential level (and below).

I really like preferential voting!

I’m not keen on first past the post.

I like that with preferential that my vote continues to matter even when my higher preferred candidate is unsuccessful.

https://www.aec.gov.au/learn/preferential-voting.htm

From wiki
“Ranked (or preferential) voting
The preferential system was introduced for federal elections in 1918, in response to the rise of the Country Party, a party representing small farmers. The Country Party split the anti-Labor vote in conservative country areas, allowing Labor candidates to win on a minority vote.“

Very recent idea, it was used here by 5 states in 1912.

As shown in Alaska, it results in a more democratic outcome, i.e., the Begich voters could have put Palin in office, even though she had far fewer votes than Peltola in the first place.

In this case, it was triggered by the fact that nobody got more than 50% of the vote. The alternative way to deal with that is a runoff. Does anyone think Palin would have won the runoff? Nobody in Alaska thinks that. She's very unpopular now.

Australia has used it for decades.

It is so ingrained that there are professionals called 'vote wranglerd' that set up dummy candidates and parties and make deals for preference deals.

A few years ago a Senator was elected with less than 1% of the primary vote. His party was The Motoring Party, or some such. However, the Senate election is different - there are several (6 I think) per electorate, and a candidate need to achieve a 'quota', not a majority.

They've got the procedures pretty much worked out now. Years ago preference voters used to tell folks to vote 1,2,3 and then stop. They fixed the law to say you must vote all boxes 1 to 60 if thats how many candidates there are. So the opponents said vote 1,2,3,3,3,3,3.... Then they changed it so if you don't number all boxes, your vote defaults to the preferences registered by the party being eliminated. Then the wranglers took over. Oh, and all the 'serious' parties issue how to vote cards which you are allowed to take into the booth with you.

Dearest Sarah:

Its true that 60% wanted a Republican.

But more relevant is that 70%* did NOT want YOU.

Or: They could campaign together, and ask their voters to always list them 1-2 on the RCV ballots.

I kid; they're never take obvious path to ensure one of them wins.

Its called "Proportional Representation" over here and has been used in Elections in Ireland for years. I'm not 100% sold on it myself. Long term it tends to create weak governments and inflate the Small parties representation. Now inflating the small parties could be seen as a good thing, but not when they are extremists, which seems to happen a lot.

We have a "quota" system here as well.
