So here I am again, sitting on a hotel bed and planning our day, which is easy - we spend the day with my dad in the skilled nursing unit.
He had a scare over the weekend, they took him to the hospital for possible hernia. It turned out to be constipation, they gave him an enema and sent him home. But he picked up some sort of infection and couldn't communicate with us. He was barely better than catatonic. We gave him some food and he's getting antibiotics, so hopefully we can talk with him today (but he will be busy with aides until 11 or so).
Time to get breakfast at this Embassy Suites.

We’re all thinking of you and Commander Dadhorn.
Hoping for a full recovery!

He's conscious and recognizes us, but he's not really able to communicate and he doesn't have his usual sharpness of mind. This is horrible, even though he doesn't seem to be in any pain. My dad is ... it's like he's gone already.
And they aren't feeding him adequately. He's lost a lot of muscular coordination, and they need to cut up the food and feed it to him, bite by bite, until he gets through this. Ol' Wifehorn is doing that, and he's showing signs of improvement under her care. But we have to leave mañana, early in the morning. I fear for the care he'll get after that.

Mrs went through that at the rehab I placed her last year. I brought yogurt, graham crackers, and whatever she asked for. We always ate lunch together. The children that worked there were competent and caring, but under-staffed, and couldn't offer the quality of care we wanted. So, my phone number was plastered everywhere*.
* Except on her forehead. And if I had written it on her forehead, there was no chance it would have been washed off.

He's got COVID-19 again. They're treating him in the skilled nursing facility, not taking him to the hospital ... yet. He's unable to feed himself or talk on the phone. I'm afraid he won't last long, but he has told us he's ready to go. There's absolutely nothing I can do to help him. Nothing. I feel ... helpless.

Death is always sad but it is better to drift away in peace when one's bell tolls than to cling on in misery among a tangle of tubes and a squadron of bleeping machines simply in order to repeat the experience some days or weeks later.
Off Topic
I was distributing tea and coffee around my local hospital's emergency room a few weeks ago. I chat to the patients but I don't ask about their medical condition. That's often the most important part – the coffee on the trolley is foul – and some embrace the opportunity to talk and they are free to tell me anything they wish.
I was struck by one lovely old lady, she seemed cheerful considering she was in an emergency bed awaiting medical attention. She told me about her cancer and other medical woes and that she had a short time left to live. She said she was at peace with that but her (adult) daughter wasn't, and that bothered her a little.
Perhaps a crucial difference is that the child has never known a time without the parent. A permanent fixture is disappearing. Permanently. It is different for the parent.
