Sorry I missed this thread earlier, but oh yes this was definitely a thing.
You can learn all about it in a fascinating and wonderfully entertaining book titled An Irreverent Curiosity: In Search of the Church's Strangest Relic in Italy's Oddest Town, by David Farley. The book inspired me to visit the town of Calcata on a trip to Italy years ago.
