Re: Gun Control
The Air Force f*cked up BIG time. The suspect's wife had gotten an order of protection against him. Orders of protection prohibit gun possession. Orders of protection MUST be entered into a national database. The Air Force never entered the order of protection allowing the suspect to obtain a gun and kill the church goers.
I wonder how many other orders of protection had not been entered.

An avowed white supremacist is back in federal custody, one of five men who prosecutors say busted through a Southeast Portland pawn shop last month using a sledgehammer and stole 47 guns worth about $20,000.
Kory Dean Boyd, 38, was arrested after federal agents searched his residence with a warrant and recovered eight guns, including seven stolen from an overnight break-in last month at Pawn Central LLC in the 12200 block of Southeast Stark Street.
But it wasn’t until the morning of Jan. 31 that shop owners discovered two large holes in the concrete block west wall of the building and guns missing.
Dozens of firearms -- pistols, revolvers, rifles and shotguns -- were missing from metal and wooden racks in the exposed room of the shop, according to agent Eric Livengood of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2 ... -shooting/He shot a man over tossed popcorn, prosecutors say. His defense: Stand-your-ground.
Lawyers on both sides of Curtis Reeves’s murder trial agree: It all began with a man who left his phone on in the movie theater.
Reeves was so irked by the white light emanating from Chad Oulson’s device that he got up to notify a manager at a Tampa-area matinee. Oulson, 43, eventually threw popcorn at Reeves, authorities say. Then Reeves, a retired police officer, pulled out a handgun and fired into the other man’s chest.
Prosecutors said this was clearly murder — a violent overreaction to some tossed snacks. But Reeves argued that he was protecting himself and cited Florida’s “stand your ground” law, which famously removed the “duty to retreat” from a threat if possible before responding with deadly force.
On Monday, eight years after the fatal shooting in Wesley Chapel, Fla., lawyers gave opening statements in a long-delayed trial that will hinge on whether Reeves can claim self-defense. Reeves’s case has stretched on amid appeals, pandemic disruptions and a battle over stand-your-ground, as he tests the limits of a law that has spread around the country despite concerns that it enables reckless violence.

https://abcnews.go.com/US/tennessee-bil ... d=82757071Tennessee bill would designate some gun owners as law enforcement
The legislation "expands the definition of law enforcement officer," it states.
Two bills in the state assembly and state senate, HB 254 and SB 2523, would amend Tennessee law and designate "a person who has been issued an enhanced handgun carry permit" as a member of law enforcement.
There are currently 686,348 active enhanced handgun carry permit holders in the state, according to the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, which issues the permits. A spokesperson for the department declined to comment about the proposed legislation.

Those were grandfathered-in in 2020 from regular concealed carry permit, to include open carry. I wonder if there is some other legislation in the state that imposes certain prerequisites to be a "member of law anforcement", like knowlege of state law and local rules. IMHO opens up the state, municipality of residence and the permit carrier to huge number of liability court cases. Box of worms etc...raison de arizona wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 6:32 pmhttps://abcnews.go.com/US/tennessee-bil ... d=82757071Tennessee bill would designate some gun owners as law enforcement

Re: Gun Control
Looks like all the bill actually does is expand the number of people who can carry in certain areas. If I am understanding correctly, currently in TN there are three basic 'zones', places anyone can carry, places where only off-duty law enforcement can carry, and places only on-duty officers can carry. The bill expands that second category to include the larger group, though effectively it would probably just erase the boundary between first and second since checking licenses of everyone you see armed in the second would probably become tiresome fast.Dave from down under wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 11:50 pm Qualified immunity????

Re: Gun Control
So basically it would make it so that stores and restaurants would be unable to prohibit folks from bringing their guns in, it sounds like. Which imo is bogus. As a business owner, it seems that I should have the freedom do decide whether I allow armed customers in my business or not.neeneko wrote: ↑Fri Feb 18, 2022 1:49 pmLooks like all the bill actually does is expand the number of people who can carry in certain areas. Re: Gun Control
Something that was not clear to me, since I know pretty much nothing about TN's specific laws, is if the rules regarding restaurants etc are state defined (no guns in venues if you are category 1) vs owner defined (owner decides if category 1 can have guns, but must allow 2 and 3).

Investigators believe a man told his 4-year-old child to fire at officers following a dispute over his order at a McDonald's drive-thru in suburban Salt Lake City on Monday, police said. An officer was able to swipe at the gun as it was fired, directing the bullet away.
The unidentified man brandished a gun at the pick-up window at the restaurant in Midvale, demanding that his order be corrected, a spokesperson for the Unified Police Department, Sgt. Melody Cutler, said. After workers asked that he pull to a waiting area while they corrected his order, they called police, she said.
The man did not cooperate and had to be pulled from the car, Cutler said. But, as officers were taking the man into custody, one looked back and saw a gun pointing from a rear window, she said. The officer who swiped the gun to the side as it was fired also yelled “kid” to other officers after seeing how young the shooter was, Cutler said.
A witness observed the man tell the 4-year-old, who was in the backseat with a 3-year-old sibling, to shoot the gun, Cutler said. She declined to elaborate.

Three men pleaded guilty on Wednesday to a domestic terrorism crime that involved plans to attack power grids throughout the nation.
Christopher Brenner Cook, 20, Jonathan Allen Frost, 24, and Jackson Mathew Sawall, 22, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to provide material support to terrorists, according to a release from the United States Department of Justice.
The release details an elaborate plan between the three to attack the nation’s substations with powerful rifles in an effort to “cost the government millions of dollars.” In doing so, the three men allegedly aimed to cause civil unrest and a race war, potentially inducing “the next Great Depression.”
Court records show Cook, who is from Columbus, met Frost in an online chat group in 2019. Frost, who lived in Texas and Indiana, reportedly shared his plans to attack the power grid with Cook, and the two began online recruitment efforts that included promoting white supremacist and Neo-Nazi ideologies.

Wouldn't that 'what if' require being invaded by a larger and better equipped army than the US military? *checks global spending* The only military that could operate on that scale would be, ahm, the US army... so all they are really suggesting is that americans should be heavily armed in order to fight their own government.
