I lost my dad tonight.
He was doing so well in the memory care facility, but on Wednesday he fell and hit his head. My mom and her caregiver were there with him, so it was just a freak accident. He was out for a few minutes, so they took him to the ER. They did a CT scan and determined he had 2 small brain bleeds so they decided to keep him overnight. I really thought I would be driving him back to his memory care the next day.
He had a good day, then a bad. Up and down. Monday morning, the nursing supervisor came in and asked if there was anything they could do for him, and he said "You have an excellent facility, but I would like to leave now." Said with a smile, then he offered the male nurse his cap to cover his bald spot. Then Monday afternoon he closed his eyes and would not wake up.
We decided to put him in hospice care, and he immediately got the "good stuff" - including morphine. Tonight, he breathed his last. I was there, with my sister.
It's good. It's right. It's sad. It's gonna be a rough couple days.

I'm so sorry. It will be a year on Friday since my husband's fatal fall and brain damage. It's a roller coaster, and falls still terrify me since. And it happens to the elderly a lot more often than people would expect.

Thanks, everyone, for your condolences. I have spent the last couple days working on a slideshow to show at my dad's visitation on Monday. Not so many pictures of him and his own children (since he usually held the camera), but lots and lots of him with his 7 grandkids and 9 great grands!
