The chart suggests that greater than half the population of Victoria are under the age of 18. Is that true?

Assuming it is a pie chart, the void could also include partially vaccinated.

Re: Covid-19 Numbers
I dont read it as a partial pie chart. I think its a weird shaped stacked bar chart.
So the proportion of unvaxxed adults in Victoria is approximately equal to the proportion of vaxed icu patients.
NOT LOOKING UP EXACT NUMBERS....
Of adults in Victoria... About 95% are vaxxed.
Of patients in ICU in Victoria,,, About 95% are unvaxxed.

The United States has recorded more than 1 million “excess deaths” since the start of the pandemic, government mortality statistics show, a toll that exceeds the officially documented lethality of the coronavirus and captures the broad consequences of the health
The excess deaths figure surpassed the milestone last week, reaching 1,023,916, according to Robert Anderson, chief of the mortality statistics branch of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics. The center updates its estimate weekly.
Although the vast majority of the excess deaths are due to the virus, the CDC mortality records also expose swollen numbers of deaths from heart disease, hypertension, dementia and other ailments across two years of pandemic misery.
“We’ve never seen anything like it,” Anderson said.

Experts: Daily COVID case count in Hawaii likely 7 times official figure
Experts: Daily COVID case count in Hawaii likely 7 times official figure
https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2022/04/2 ... al-figure/HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - COVID infections are on the rise in Hawaii, but home testing means it’s hard to get a true picture of the daily case count.
The Hawaii Pandemic Applied Modeling Work Group suspects that are about 1,500 new daily infections on Oahu. That’s roughly seven times the official number.
Based on state Department of Health numbers, HiPAM said that could rise to 2,500 in early May.
“It shows that there are a lot of transmissions, but it seems to be in control in terms of severe hospitalization,” said Monique Chyba, a mathematician who does modeling for HiPAM.

The best data going forward will be found in the sewers of communities that have sewers.
As we see more and more prominent people testing positive but having no severe symptoms maybe that is the new normal. As long as most people can be convinced to get vaccinated the rate of serious illness will be low.

That's pretty much the plan here. While they are still reporting the numbers on a weekly basis, the main thing they are looking at are the numbers from wastewater. They are also looking at the numbers of people hospitalized. The numbers are very low, but are ticking up slightly, but there were no hospitalizations in the county last week.

Covid deaths no longer overwhelmingly among unvaccinated as toll on elderly grows
Experts say numbers show importance of boosters — and the risks the most vulnerable still face
Experts say numbers show importance of boosters — and the risks the most vulnerable still face
https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2 ... -boosters/The vaccinated made up 42 percent of fatalities in January and February during the highly contagious omicron variant’s surge, compared with 23 percent of the dead in September, the peak of the delta wave, according to nationwide data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed by The Post. The data is based on the date of infection and limited to a sampling of cases in which vaccination status was known.
As a group, the unvaccinated remain far more vulnerable to the worst consequences of infection — and are far more likely to die — than people who are vaccinated, and they are especially more at risk than people who have received a booster shot.
A key explanation for the rise in deaths among the vaccinated is that covid-19 fatalities are again concentrated among the elderly.
Nearly two-thirds of the people who died during the omicron surge were 75 and older, according to a Post analysis, compared with a third during the delta wave. Seniors are overwhelmingly immunized, but vaccines are less effective and their potency wanes over time in older age groups.
The bulk of vaccinated deaths are among people who did not get a booster shot, according to state data provided to The Post. In two of the states, California and Mississippi, three-quarters of the vaccinated senior citizens who died in January and February did not have booster doses.

Article about last weeks's milestone...
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-05-17/ ... /100991268
The COVID-19 death toll in the US has passed 1 million
If losing one person leaves such a lasting void, consider all that's been lost with the deaths of 1 million people.
Last week, the White House confirmed the US had passed that once-unthinkable milestone.
The pandemic has left an estimated 194,000 children in the US without one or both of their parents.
It has deprived communities of leaders, teachers and caregivers. It has robbed the country of expertise and persistence, humour and devotion.

Re: Covid-19 Numbers
It was passed earlier.
Before we knew that covid had reached the US, excess deaths rose. Still on the high side. People couldn't be tested for covid unless they had pneumonia. We had so little knowledge about covid for a long time. Some deaths were caused by blood clots - when it wasn't known that covid causes them.
WaPo has an interesting article on excess deaths.
It's from 2/2022. Already, there are changes. The article states "Although the vast majority of the excess deaths are due to the virus, the CDC mortality records also expose swollen numbers of deaths from heart disease, hypertension, dementia and other ailments across two years of pandemic misery." Now we know that covid can cause those problems. particularly heart problems and brain related problems.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2 ... day-surge/
For the third year, Americans are greeting the unofficial start of summer shadowed by the specter of the coronavirus amid rising covid-19 cases and hospitalizations across the country.
The United States is recording more than 100,000 infections a day — at least five times higher than this point last year — as it confronts the most transmissible versions of the virus yet. Immunity built up as a result of the record winter outbreak appears to provide little protection against the latest variants, new research shows. And public health authorities are bracing for Memorial Day gatherings to fuel another bump in cases, potentially seeding a summer surge.
It’s a far cry from a year ago, with predictions of a “hot vax summer” uninhibited by covid concerns. Back then, coronavirus seemed to teeter on the brink of defeat as cases plummeted to their lowest levels since spring 2020 and vaccines became widely available for adults. Even the vaccinated and boosted now grudgingly accept the virus as a formidable foe that’s here to stay as governments abandon measures to contain it.

Re: Covid-19 Numbers
Yep. Our graphs are going up, and hospitals have limited employees b/c of high rates of covid. I always thought it was stupid to throw away all safety, such as masks and social distancing. I picked up my mail today, and I was one of only two people wearing a mask.
I guess the good news is that no one hospitalized on my island is in ICU. But there are a lot more people in the hospitals.

Re: Covid-19 Numbers
We went from low to medium to high transmission in the last few weeks. I am seeing more people wearing masks around here. It is more noticeable every time I'm out. We have a fairly high vaccination rate here in the county, over 80 percent with at least one and several points above 70 fully vaccinated, but it seems like breakthrough infections are becoming more common everywhere.
We are only eating in restaurants that have outdoor seating again, although, weather allowing, that's mostly what we've been doing anyway. Hubby is having his first knee surgery next week on Tuesday. I think I am just dropping him off at the door and picking him up the next day. Spending all day in a hospital waiting room does not feel smart.

Re: Covid-19 Numbers

Despite strong levels of vaccination among older people, Covid killed them at vastly higher rates during this winter’s Omicron wave than it did last year, preying on long delays since their last shots and the variant’s ability to skirt immune defenses. This winter’s wave of deaths in older people belied the Omicron variant’s relative mildness. Almost as many Americans 65 and older died in four months of the Omicron surge as did in six months of the Delta wave, even though the Delta variant, for any one person, tended to cause more severe illness.
While overall per capita Covid death rates have fallen, older people still account for an overwhelming share of them.“This is not simply a pandemic of the unvaccinated,” said Andrew Stokes, an assistant professor in global health at Boston University who studies age patterns of Covid deaths. “There’s still exceptionally high risk among older adults, even those with primary vaccine series.”

Re: Covid-19 Numbers
From the John Hopkins Public Health Expert Insights email newsletter:
Even though the US has been easing into a new normal and more of us are taking vacations and attending gatherings like graduations and barbecues, this past holiday weekend was a reminder that COVID is far from over and cases are roughly 4.7 times higher than they were this time last year.
According to data from the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, the seven-day average on last year’s Memorial Day weekend was 17,887 cases vs this past weekend’s 84,547 cases. However, deaths are down 50% this year.
But how accurate is this data? Adalja says that case counts are likely much higher because at-home tests are going unreported. But this isn’t a new problem.
Back in March 2020, maybe one in 12 infections were being captured, Columbia University Infectious Disease specialist Jeffrey Shaman told NPR.
Now that at-home tests are more readily available, Shaman’s research group believes the actual number of cases could be up to 8x higher than case counts.

Re: Covid-19 Numbers
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/ ... cases-rate
The United States is now in its fourth-biggest Covid surge, according to official case counts – but experts believe the actual current rate is much higher.
America is averaging about 94,000 new cases every day, and hospitalizations have been ticking upward since April, though they remain much lower than previous peaks.
But Covid cases could be undercounted by a factor of 30, an early survey of the surge in New York City indicates. “It would appear official case counts are under-estimating the true burden of infection by about 30-fold, which is a huge surprise,” said Denis Nash, an author of the study and a distinguished professor of epidemiology at the City University of New York School of Public Health.
About one in five – 22% – of adult New Yorkers likely had Covid between 23 April and 8 May, according to the preprint study, which has not been peer-reviewed or published. That would mean 1.5 million adults in the city had Covid in a single two-week period – far higher than official counts during that time.

Just got back from the farmer's market, which shares a parking lot with a state health dept drive-through covid testing site. It's the first time in months the testing site has been open.
Re: Covid-19 Numbers
The numbers here dropped this week from last week by about 20-25 percent. That was a surprise. I thought it would continue going up somewhat, but I didn't expect to see a drop this soon. We'll see what happens next week.

Numbers going up here. 24.7% positivity rate.
I noticed that I was getting a lot of work emails about people on sick leave and wondered if the rate was rising.... Now programs, meetings and events are being canceled.

Re: Covid-19 Numbers
To my surprise, the numbers are down here for the second week in a row, and the CDC has downgraded transmission here from high to medium. I was sure two weeks after Memorial Day the numbers would go up.

Yesterday the positivity rate rose to 26.5%. Lots more notices of employees out on sick leave. More businesses shortening their hours because of sick employees.
Today is a state holiday - King Kamehameha Day. Lots of public events across the islands. Tomorrow there are parades everywhere. Cases are going to explode by Monday.
