Melania Trump to speak at National Archives event swearing in new US citizens

Former first lady Melania Trump is set to speak at a National Archives ceremony next week to swear in new US citizens, according to a news release from the agency.

Melania Trump, who herself became a US citizen in 2006, will speak at the December 15 event on Bill of Rights Day along with US Archivist Colleen Shogan as 25 people from 25 countries are sworn in to become new American citizens.

The former first lady’s expected appearance will mark her latest public outing amid the presidential bid by her husband, former President Donald Trump, who holds a complicated relationship with the document archival agency.

This is the sort of thing former First Ladies are typically asked to do. And as a naturalized citizen herself, Mrs. Trump brings to the occasion a personal connection. So on the surface she’s a good choice.

What makes her a great choice is that this is, in effect, the Biden Administration asking Trump’s wife to participate in a ceremony sponsored in part by the very organization that has resulted in personal humiliation for him. Frankly, I’m surprised that she agreed to do it because it really is a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

No idea at all. A couple of times there have been Twitter-type rumors of a renegotiation, always with Melania as the power player. But who knows.

Speaking to new citizens in DC today, Melania Trump says she was having a very difficult time trying to get her US citizenship until “ultimately my journey was streamlined” and she got it.

Watch this dilemma play out for Trump. You know he’ll want to use his mother-in-law’s death to his advantage. First guess would be that he’d claim that all of his court cases have to be postponed until after her funeral. But that would mean that he also can’t campaign or golf during that period, ergo, the dilemma. We’ll see.
