Biden fires Architect of Capitol

BY ALEX GANGITANO -
02/13/23 2:49 PM ET Updated 2:53 p.m.

President Biden fired Architect of the Capitol Brett Blanton on Monday, a White House official told The Hill, following outrage over an inspector general report that found Blanton misused a government vehicle and allegedly impersonated a law enforcement officer.

“After doing our due diligence, the Architect of Capitol was terminated at the President’s direction,” the official said.

The president’s move comes just hours after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) called for Blanton to step down or be removed by Biden.

House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil (R-Wis.) and ranking member Joseph Morelle (D-N.Y.) had also called for the resignation of the Architect of the Capitol, who oversees the Capitol complex’s building maintenance, preservation and development.

The White House earlier this month was asked about the inspector general report. Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at the time Biden was “taking this very seriously” and would “take any advice that the members of Congress or any action that they want to take very seriously.”

Only the president has the authority to fire the Architect of the Capitol. Blanton was nominated by former President Trump to a 10-year term as Architect of the Capitol and was confirmed by the Senate in December 2019.

The inspector general report released in October found that Blanton and his family had misused Architect of the Capitol vehicles intended for home-to-work use as personal vehicles, resulting in nearly $14,000 worth of inappropriate costs. Additionally, Blanton had been improperly identified as an off-duty police officer during an incident in which he chased down a hit-and-run that happened outside his residence.

He had denied misrepresenting himself as law enforcement, saying that it was a mistake on the part of Fairfax County Police after Blanton identified himself as a “Capitol Police Board Member.”

Blanton as Architect of the Capitol is one of three members of the Capitol Police Board, which oversees the U.S. Capitol Police.

Blanton was grilled last week by the House Administration Committee on the report.

You'd think one appointee, and to such a low-key position, might not be corrupt, but no.

Republicans take aim at risque jokes and romance novels with anti-sex bills

A wave of proposed legislation pushed by Republicans across the US at the state level is aimed at outlawing aspects of sexuality that could have a huge impact on Americans’ private lives and businesses.

Opponents to the laws before legislatures in various states say the planned new legislation could spawn prosecution of breast-pump companies in Texas for nipples on advertising, or a bookstore might be banned from selling romance novels in West Virginia, or South Carolina could imprison standup comics if a risque joke is heard by a young person.

The bills are part of a post-Roe nationwide strategy by the religious wing of the Republican party, now that federal abortion rights have fallen. They range from banning all businesses that sell sex-related goods to anti-drag queen bills. Tyler Dees, an Arkansas state senator who wrote an anti-porn bill said: “I would love to outlaw it all,” referring to porn.

The most prevalent bills relate to age verification of sex-related websites. Seventeen states drafted porn age-verification bills, many inspired by Louisiana’s law that went into effect in January. Louisiana’s law requires websites featuring 33.33% or more pornographic content to check government-issued ID to verify users are 18 and older. Websites that don’t comply face civil penalties. Parents can sue the site if kids access it.

Republicans to adopt loyalty pledge for debate participants

https://apnews.com/article/biden-politi ... f83348ed68
Republican presidential candidates will be blocked from the debate stage this summer if they do not sign a pledge to support the GOP’s ultimate presidential nominee, according to draft language set to be adopted when the Republican National Committee meets next week.

The proposal sets up a potential clash with former President Donald Trump, who has raised the possibility of leaving the Republican Party and launching an independent candidacy if he does not win the GOP nomination outright. While RNC officials and Trump aides downplay that possibility, such a move could destroy the GOP’s White House aspirations in 2024 and raise existential questions about the party’s future.

“After the primary, it is imperative to the health and growth of our Republican Party, as well as the country, that we all come together and unite behind our nominee to defeat Joe Biden and the Democrats,” RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel said in a statement to The Associated Press when asked about the loyalty pledge.

As many as a dozen Republicans are expected to enter the 2024 presidential contest as the GOP braces for an all-out civil war in the months ahead.

He'll weasel out with the inevitable "They treated me very badly," a nebulous phrase which can mean anything from attempted murder to failing to give him two scoops of ice cream. And which he nevertheless claims as his get-out-of-promise-free card.

As round and round we run;
And the truth shall ever come uppermost,
And justice shall be done.

Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate worked for Republicans

SCOTT BAUER
Fri, February 17, 2023 at 11:29 PM GMT+1

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — One of the two conservative candidates for an open Wisconsin Supreme Court seat was paid by state and national Republicans to advise on election issues, including the plan to have fake GOP electors cast ballots for Donald Trump even though he lost the state.

Dan Kelly is a former state Supreme Court Justice who is one of four candidates in Tuesday's primary. The top two vote-getters will advance to the April 4 general election, with the winner determining whether the court remains 4-3 majority conservative or flips to liberal control.

Kelly was a justice on the court from 2016 to 2020. He was endorsed by Trump during his unsuccessful run for the court in 2020.

After Kelly left the court in August 2020, he went on to be paid nearly $120,000 by the Wisconsin Republican Party and the Republican National Committee to work on election issues, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel first reported Friday.

Kelly's work for the state GOP was revealed in testimony that former party Chairman Andrew Hitt gave the U.S. House committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, attacks on the U.S. Capitol.

Hitt, according to his testimony that was released by the committee last month, said that Kelly was working as a “special counsel” and had “pretty extensive conservations” about the fake Republican electors. Hitt testified that he brought in Kelly to “kind of advise on election law matters.”

The Republican fake electors met in the Wisconsin Capitol building on the same day that Democrats cast the state's 10 electoral votes for Biden. Hitt and others who cast ballots for Trump said they were doing so in case courts overturned Biden's win and gave the state to Trump.

Biden won the state by nearly 21,000 votes, and every attempt by Trump and his allies to overturn the results failed.

Kelly's campaign spokesperson, Jim Dick, said Kelly "took a call from RPW Chairman Hitt on the subject of Republican electors and was asked if he was in the loop about this issue and Justice Kelly stated he was not.”

RNC Chair: All candidates will pledge to support GOP nominee ahead of debate

https://www.axios.com/2023/02/26/rnc-ch ... =editorial
All candidates wishing to take part in the Republican party's first presidential debate will have to sign a pledge to support the eventual 2024 nominee, Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel told CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday.

While the criteria for the debate haven't been released yet, the pledge was a requirement in 2016 and should be a "no-brainer" for the 2024 presidential debates, McDaniel said.

"Anyone getting on the Republican national committee debate stage should be able to say, 'I will support the will of the voters and the eventual nominee of our party,'" she added.

State of play: Host Dana Bash then played a clip of former President Trump's appearance on the Hugh Hewitt Show earlier this month, in which he was asked if he would support the GOP nominee, even if it wasn't him.

"It would have to depend on who the nominee was," Trump said.

McDaniel pointed out that Trump and all the other Republican candidates signed the pledge in 2016.

"I think they're all going to sign it. I really do," McDaniel said, adding that, "I think President Trump would like to be on the debate stage."

Bash then asked how the pledge could be enforced, given the fact that by the time the nominee is chosen the primary debates will be over.

Not to mention that even if you follow down the path of "cost savings" what about that very expensive murder trial for his parent(s). Wouldn't that just eat up all those wonderful cost savings we enjoyed by the child not surviving?

An image appearing to show Tennessee governor Bill Lee in drag has gone viral on social as he is set to approve a bill that will make drag performances illegal in the state.

The photo was shared on Reddit on the r/PoliticalHumor subreddit. The user who posted it noted in the caption that the image was found in the 1977 yearbook of Franklin High School.

'Hard Luck Woman'

The picture seemingly shows the governor in drag costume posing alongside three other women. "Hard Luck Woman," the image is captioned.

As Tennessee moves forward to ban drag, enjoy a high school yearbook picture of Tennessee Governor Bill Lee in drag (Franklin High yearbook 1977, page 165)

The photo instantly went viral on social media with users calling out the Republican party's hypocrisy, after images appearing to show U.S. Rep George Santos participating in drag shows while he was a teenager in Brazil surfaced last month.
Of course, it's not the drag that's the bad behavior.
