Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has requested medical records from a Georgia telehealth clinic that provides gender-affirming care, a newly discovered move that shows the Republican official is looking in multiple states for information about transgender youths.

Paxton requested transgender youths’ medical records from QueerMed — which is based in Decatur, Ga. — late last year, the health provider’s founder Izzy Lowell told The Washington Post on Sunday.

“This request from the Texas Attorney general is a clear attempt to intimidate providers of gender-affirming care and parents and families that seek that care outside of Texas and other states with bans,” Lowell said in a statement.

Lowell, a family physician, said the clinic stopped providing services to minors in Texas after that state banned gender-affirming care for minors in September. Paxton’s Nov. 17 request, however, was for information about patients dating back to Jan. 1, 2022.

Let me be clear: QueerMed will never, ever turn over HIPAA-protected patient information,” said Lowell’s statement. “We are not breaking any laws and we will continue to legally provide care in states that have not made the callous decision to put politics ahead of patient health.”

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) is suing five Texas cities over their decriminalization of marijuana.

In a Wednesday press release, the office of the attorney general (OAG) said it was suing the cities for “instructing police not to enforce Texas drug laws concerning possession and distribution of marijuana.

Paxton’s suit comes amid a broader push by the conservative state government to exert authority over its left-leaning cities.

The five cities targeted in Wednesday’s suit are Austin, San Marcos, Killeen, Elgin and Denton, each of which enacted laws decriminalizing marijuana one to three years ago. Paxton did not clarify why he chose to bring the lawsuit now.
Although none of the cities has legalized the drug — which would allow it to be bought and sold openly — each has passed ordinances directing police and prosecutors to deprioritize pressing charges against people holding small amounts of cannabis.

In Austin, for example, a 2020 city council resolution directed police not to press charges against those caught with less than 4 ounces of marijuana.

Dope. I grew up in Texas and you have to take Texas history twice - once in 4th grade and again in 7th. Well, back in the day you did; no idea what they're doing now but he's not way younger than I am. Besides, Texas has an outsize ego about itself and its history, so everything is a legend. Texas became a republic in 1836 and became a state in 1845 - those two years are burned into the brain of everyone in Texas. Before the Civil War, Kenny boy. And it might be that Texas joined the union after being independent because it COULDN'T protect itself. Sheesh.

And being from Houston, I obviously knew my whole life what day San Jacinto Day is and what day Junteenth is (it started in Galveston). And what those days meant.

What a dirtbag.
"Retaliation": Texas AG Paxton Demands PFLAG Provide Names, Addresses Of Trans Members
On Thursday, a legal filing by PFLAG National revealed that Attorney General Ken Paxton of Texas was seeking identification of transgender members. The organization alleges retaliation.

In a legal filing Thursday, PFLAG National sought to block a new demand from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton that would require the organization to identify its Texas transgender members, doctors who work with them, and contingency plans for anti-transgender legislation in the state. The civil investigative demand, issued on Feb. 5, calls for extensive identifying information and records from the LGBTQ+ rights organization. PFLAG, in its filing to block the demands, describes them as "retaliation" for its opposition to anti-transgender laws in the state and alleges that they violate the freedom of speech and association protections afforded by the United States and Texas constitutions.

The demands are extensive. The letter to PFLAG National demands "unredacted" information around claims made by Brian Bond, PFLAG's Chief Executive Officer, in a legal fight against the ban on gender-affirming care in the state. Bond's claims highlighted that PFLAG represents 1,500 members in Texas, many of whom are seeking contingency plans if SB14, the ban on gender-affirming care, takes effect.

Per the lawsuit, PFLAG National states that it would be required to disclose Texas trans youth members, including "complete names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, jobs, home addresses, telephone numbers, [and] email addresses." It also states they would need to hand over documents and communications related to their medical care, hospitals outside the state, and "contingency plans" discussed among members for navigating the new laws on gender-affirming care in Texas.

I'm a PFLAG chapter leader and this is just so awful. So useless. So unnecessary. So so hurtful. PFLAG has a good team fighting this. At our support meetings, I rarely know anyone's last name, let alone SSN, address, etc. Plus I'd tell them to stuff it if they asked (through a lawyer letter of course). For more info, PFLAG has good info:

Texas AG Ken Paxton to pay $300,000 to stay out of federal court

https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watc ... rial-deal/
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) will have to pay just under $300,000 in a deal that keeps him out of federal court.

The deal — which also requires the attorney general to perform 100 hours of community service and take continuing legal education classes — allows Paxton to avoid a trial for securities fraud, for which he could have faced life in prison.

The pretrial agreement — which the Paxton camp said federal prosecutors instigated — left longtime observers scratching their heads.

“Top of mind: why would prosecutors cut a deal now, [two] weeks before trial,” Lauren McGaughy, a political reporter for Austin’s local NPR station KUT, wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

The Department of Justice has provided little clarity on the resolution to the case, which has dragged on for nine years since Collin County prosecutors in 2015 indicted Paxton — who was then a state legislator — for soliciting investments in a server company, Servergy, without disclosing that he was on the company payroll.

A federal court ruled in 2017 that Servergy founder William Mapp III was guilty of lying to investors about the company’s technology, which he had claimed allowed it to run server farms far more efficiently than competitors.

Mapp was fired by Servergy, was ordered to pay $22,500 and ultimately had to take work as an Uber driver to make ends meet.

Paxton has fared better. As the federal case over his actions at Servergy dragged on over nearly a decade — through fights over a trial venue, back pay and whether the case itself was taking too long — Paxton won election to the state attorney’s office, where he established himself as a dogged prosecutor entrenched in the furthermost right flank of the country’s culture wars.
