It's a mockery of justice and the political system. We need a law banning the gerrymandering of districts to benefit either party.

I'm pretty sure that there are laws prohibiting gerrymandering. They're just about impossible to enforce.

We need to make systemic changes that make gerrymandering impossible. Perhaps we could elect our representative statewide, rather than having separate districts. For example, Ohio has seventeen representatives in the House. Allow any candidate that wish, to run statewide. Allow each voter to vote for one candidate on the list. The top 17 vote-getters become our delegation to Washington. People would tend to vote for those candidates that they knew.

I don't think that this would even require a Constitutional amendment.

There are other ways of structuring the election that reduce or eliminated the effectiveness of gerrymandering.

Thought the Supremes ruled on this a year or two ago. Said it was up to the states--at least in that case.

The thing is, Gerrymandering is sort of a difficult thing to stop. It is named after Elbridge Gerry who signed the Declaration of Independence which means, it has existed for quite a long time. Still, the current GOP who longs for their Permanent Majority has taken it to amazing lengths. They see the handwriting on the wall.

I would like to see them come up with bipartisan commissions to do the map drawing, but it is very hard to get past the "to the victor goes the spoils" mentality. Trump wanted to take us back to the pre-civil service laws that were created after President Garfield was shot. Some of his world long for that corrupt party boss model.

The Democrats would do well to try to at least nibble at the white working class and rural folks. There is a real sense from those folks that the urban Democratic folk looks down their elitist nose at them, so they listen to what the GOP says instead. It's hard to convince people to open their mind when you're calling them poor white trash.

Ohio is criminally gerrymandered. Jim Jordan's district is a prime example. As an extra fuck-you to liberals and Democrats, mapmakers stuck liberal college town Oberlin in his district. However, as the attached article from Common Cause explains, Ohio voters overwhlemingly supported redistricting reform in 2015 and 2018. New maps will be drawn this year after the census results come out. Even though Republicans are still in charge of the new redistricting commission, there is hope for improvement.

:snippity:
The following fifteen highlights are from the Timeline below.

Congressman Jordan took the following actions:
  1. Suggested Democrats will try to steal the election (starting Aug. 22, 2020)
  2. Suggested and directly alleged the election was stolen (starting Nov. 5, 2020)
  3. Endorsed Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell’s call to investigate Dominion and Smartmatic (starting Nov. 15, 2020)
  4. Called for immediate congressional investigations of alleged election fraud (starting Nov. 18, 2020)
  5. Endorsed state legislators’ picking their own electors (starting Dec. 7, 2020)
  6. Said Trump should not concede (starting Dec. 7, 2020)
  7. Started public call to object to certification on Jan. 6 (starting Dec. 13, 2020)
  8. Supported call for “special counsel” to investigate alleged election fraud (starting Dec. 10, 2020)
  9. Called Jan. 6 the “ultimate date of significance” (Dec. 16, 2020)
  10. Met with President Trump and small group of House Republicans to coordinate plans to object to certification on January 6 (Dec. 21, 2021)
  11. Raised Trump supporters’ expectations by saying he hoped a majority of Congress will object on January 6 (Jan. 5, 2021)
  12. Helped lead the effort to vote against certification on January 6 (starting Dec. 13, 2020)
  13. Called for Trump supporters to remain peaceful, but does not say to disperse (Jan. 6, 2021 3:02 PM)
  14. Made false claims about Speaker Pelosi and security preparations for January 6 (starting Feb. 15, 2021)
  15. Revealed for the first time that he spoke with President Trump on Jan. 6 (July 28, 2021)
This course of conduct arguably sets Rep. Jordan apart from every other Republican member of Congress who supported the Big Lie, voted to object to the certification of the election, or engaged in other related activities.

I thought it was merely that he is trapped in a mental time-warp in the 80s, when everybody wore blue suits, blue shirts and yellow ties exclusively for a while. Complete fashion lemmings.

Interesting, looks like some company put that graphic together and included their info at the bottom. Pretty clever marketing idea, hadn't seen that before. Would be a pretty cheap idea to take pull quotes and assemble them that way. Definitely will keep that in the idea file.

Republican Rep. Jim Jordan has earned a reputation as a highly controversial politician, though I was a little surprised to see him cause a stir this week with a short tweet.

At a time when the delta variant's summer surge has renewed the nation's divisions over coronavirus vaccines, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) on Monday said mandates enforcing vaccination do not reflect what it means to be American. "Vaccine mandates are un-American," Jordan tweeted.

At this point, we could point to the American tradition and note that George Washington, among others, embraced mandatory inoculations. Indeed, by some measures, the United States might very well have lost the Revolutionary War were it not for a policy that Jordan apparently considers "un-American."
Oh, and he was on Fox & Friends this morning. The discussion over the Afghan evacuations and all his outrage ran right into Benghazi (I'm not kidding). After that, all about Covid beginnings in Wuhan and Rand Paul was right. Nobody asked him about the Jan 6 commission asking for preservation of phone records.

Off topic, but only slightly… The only reason we can say that something is or is not “un-American” is because the colonists won the Revolutionary War. If they had lost, Washington, et al, would’ve been hanged as traitors. I don think most Americans really understand that the Declaration of Independence was an act of sedition.

:yeahthat:

Lots of Americans don't realize that those seditionists of 1776 knew very well the consequences if they failed. MPs would not be going on about how Washington, Jefferson, and Madison were just tourists.
