Puerto Rico - Next State?

https://www.yahoo.com/news/sen-martin-h ... 24452.html
Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and Rep. Darren Soto (D-Fla.) announced Tuesday they would introduce legislation to start the motions for Puerto Rico statehood.

Why it matters: More than 52% of Puerto Ricans voted last November in favor of statehood, three years after Hurricane Maria struck and caused one of the worst natural disasters in the island's recorded history. It exposed Puerto Rico's vulnerable position as a U.S. territory and its lack of resources to battle poverty.

52% is still not where I want to see it. Maybe under Biden we can get that number up.
Statehood is a big step, because then they have to pay federal personal taxes. We have to treat them better. We have to treat them as fellow citizens -- and not just toss paper towels.

I don't think Biden will throw paper towels. ;)

Imma thinking you might probably be right on that. ;)

I'm in south Florida -- we have many "poor ricans" here (one of my Puerto Rican friends jokes with that). They are American citizens, 110%. Just because they may be ESL doesn't change that.

I haven't seen any info on how the Senate feels about this. I can very well see all the R's plus a Manchin or two against it. Usually new states are brought in in pairs. The only other choice I could see would be the Virgin Islands. In that case there would be over-representation of the VI in the Senate. Does anyone think this will be brought before congress during the Biden administration?

That's how I see it.

But they will both vote for Democrats, IMHO. That's a problem for the Rs.

Yeah, but I think eventually, once they got a few lumps from the Republicans, they'd come around.

In California, the Hispanic vote was not solidly Democratic ... until Prop. 187.

The R's would probably insist that Puerta Rico formally adopt English as their official language and that they print ballots only in English.

Many R's and other conservatives are upset that the Voting Rights act of 1964 requires ballots to be available in both English and Spanish.

'Chaotic situation': Puerto Ricans indignant at tourists breaking Covid mandates
Experts and residents worry that tourists’ unwillingness to follow Covid-19 measures could reverse the island's successful efforts at containing the virus.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/latino/cha ... d_nn_tw_ma
Scenes of American tourists violating Covid-19 measures and mandates while visiting Puerto Rico have stirred indignation among residents worried that their efforts to control the pandemic may be marred as more visitors arrive on spring break trips.

Israel Meléndez Ayala, 34, a longtime resident of Old San Juan, saw many tourists without masks when he and his partner went out to walk their dog this week.

:snippity:

Puerto Ricans in the U.S. territory have avoided overwhelming their already fragile health care system during the pandemic so far, mainly because of extraordinary measures the local government put in place early on — and people’s willingness to comply with them. Puerto Rico was one of the first U.S. jurisdictions to issue a mask mandate and currently has the longest pandemic-related curfew compared to any state.

A series of viral videos have shown tourists violating the island’s midnight curfew, mask mandate and physical distancing guidelines, among other restrictions. Other videos show disorderly tourists getting into fights, dancing on top of moving vehicles, and destroying private property around Puerto Rico’s metropolitan area, including well-known tourist spots. One of the most viral videos showed a tourist riding a scooter in the middle of a busy highway in San Juan, the capital city.

Puerto Rico gets over $900M in education funds previously restricted by Trump admin
"Our students have endured a lot, since the hurricanes from 2017 to earthquakes and the Covid-19 pandemic, and they deserve to go back to normal," Gov. Pedro Pierluisi said.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/latino/pue ... d_nn_tw_ma
Puerto Rico has been granted immediate access to $912 million in federal funds that had not been available to students in public and private schools on the island as a result of restrictions imposed by the Trump administration, Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona announced Monday.

“The Department is committed to partnering with and supporting Puerto Rico in the efficient and effective use of department funds to serve Puerto Rico’s students, including to safely reopen schools and maximize in-person instructional time," Cardona said in a statement.

The new funds come less than two weeks after Puerto Rico reopened dozens of public and private schools for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic began.

The aid was awarded after Puerto Rico Gov. Pedro Pierluisi sent a letter to Cardona on March 5 requesting immediate access to previously approved aid "in order to provide the necessary resources for the students of Puerto Rico," Pierluisi said in a statement.

That's pretty much the case with every US territory...I say make them a state or give them their independence.

Ironic that we're a country that was founded upon fighting colonialism...

Fixed it. I doubt any current US territory could afford to be independent.
