Deliveroo’s sudden collapse in Australia leaves delivery riders scrambling to find new jobs
Experts warn company’s closure could be the first of several delivery services to disappear due to challenging economic conditions

Josh Taylor
Thu 17 Nov 2022 07.09 GMT

Business and delivery riders have been left scrambling to find a replacement for Deliveroo after the company’s sudden departure from Australia overnight.

Experts warn Deliveroo’s closure could be the first of several meal-delivery services to disappear due to challenging economic conditions, while prices for deliveries may rise to make the industry more sustainable.

Deliveroo shocked employees, contractors, partners and customers on Wednesday when it announced it would go into administration and stop operating in Australia immediately.

The company’s website was wiped overnight and its app no longer functions.

Riders said they were given no notice of the plans to shut the company.

Scotty from marketing, and ex PM is not having a good week

analysis: The Bell inquiry shreds Scott Morrison's credibility and for Labor the timing couldn't be better

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-11-26/ ... /101698708

Meep, Meep, Meep!", exclaimed the Labor MP this week cheerily as he anticipated the release of the Bell inquiry into Scott Morrison's multiple ministries.

"That, of course, is the sound of a truck reversing over a rotting carcass."

Labor Government returned
3 election wins in a row for Labor

Two party Swing against Labor around 4% (but see below)
Libs regain 2 traditional stronghold seats
Greens win 5 seats, which is a pickup of 3 at Labor expense.
Independents win at least 3, at Liberal expense.

Huge swings to Liberals in wesrern Melbourne suburbs not enough to win those seats.
Swings against Labor of over 20% yet Labor still won by 60 to 40.

Prepoll ballots still being counted so all numbers listed here will change.

:?: Why the "huge swings to Liberals in western Melbourne"? Is there a local reason for that?

Just to remind US-centric folk: the Liberal Party in Oz is the right-wing party with conservative (in US terminology) policies, economic "freedom" etc.

Me: massive suburban development, changing demographics with not enough roads, hospitals, schools.
Small “l” Liberals are closer to centralists (or are), Teal candidates are centralists.
Very few in our Liberal party are as openly as right wing as the most moderate part of the US GOP.

Discontent in Melbourne’s west is seeing Labor’s rivals getting ready to shake the party’s stronghold
Liberal and independent candidates are united in accusing the government of neglecting the region and its infrastructure

No worries! :)

From the Guardian website

the main headlines:
Victorian Labor has been re-elected with a majority. The premier, Daniel Andrews, claims victory and declares: “Friends, hope always defeats hate.”
The Liberal leader, Matthew Guy, concedes defeat, but says the Coalition will have more MPs than in the last parliament.
The Greens leader, Samantha Ratnam, calls the election a Greenslide after her party claims the seat of Richmond.
Teal independents are likely to win two or three Melbourne seats, but rural independents have fared poorly in the election.
The Liberal candidate and former tennis pro Sam Groth wins Nepean from Labor.
The Labor campaign manager, James Merlino, says the Liberals’ focus on Andrews was a “bad call”.
The Liberal MP Matt Bach calls it “a deeply disappointing result”.
The Victorian result shares parallels with the federal election, analyst Ben Raue says.
Labor and the Coalition both see declines in their primary vote.

Yeah.

Labor has been spending LOTS of money in the East to catch up with decades of neglect to infrastructure. They call it the Big Build. They most visible is railway level crossings choking the city. We used to have level crossings closed for 20 or 30 minutes at a time. The triangle between the Dandenong line and the Frankston line around Oakleigh could be cut off by road from the rest of the city (ambulance, fire truck?) For an hour at peak hours.

This is old infrastructure that should have been fixed gradually over the years. In contrast, the west is young. It is growing fast, and needs transport, schools, and hospitals now. It doesn't seem to be happening.

Also, the Labor dominance was so great after the last election that it had to drop off. The demographic is changing from rural industrial to young professional families who are not satisfied with poor schools, non-existent public transport, and distant overcrowded hospitals.

Labor is trying to give these things attention, but they are starting from so far behind that it is hard to see the progress.

In the US they’re called potted plants. Pot plants are something very different than balcony daisies.

I had visions of stoned cockatoos hurling actual marijuana plants at passers by 😄

Not as much fun as the cockatoos.

Scott Morrison censured over secret ministries, as former prime minister decries reprimand as 'political intimidation'

Former prime minister Scott Morrison has been censured over his self-appointment to five portfolios during the height of the global pandemic, which he kept secret from the public and many of his own cabinet colleagues.

The censure passed with the support of the government, crossbenchers and Liberal MP Bridget Archer. Former home affairs minister Karen Andrews, who previously called for Mr Morrison to quit parliament over the scandal, abstained from voting.

The censure motion noted Mr Morrison appointed himself to administer five additional portfolios, that he did not notify cabinet, relevant departments, the House of Representatives nor the public, that (his actions) "fundamentally undermined" the principles of responsible government and that the former PM's move was "corrosive of trust in government".

The Member for Cook was censured for "failing to disclose his appointments to the House of Representatives, the Australian people and the cabinet, which undermined responsible government and eroded public trust in Australia's democracy".

A censure is the most-serious statement of disapproval a parliament can make, although it is symbolic and triggers no consequence for Mr Morrison as a backbencher.

I know nothing of Australian politics or of parliamentary systems in general, but what the hell was he thinking? Is there precedent in Australian or other countries' politics for something like this? Even if you don't understand the maneuvering, how could he possibly not imagine that when this was discovered (as it inevitably would be), that it would blow up massively?

I was just curious why the birds were being so selective in which plants they were dropping.
