Far-Right Platform Gab Has Been Hacked—Including Private Data

DDoSecrets cofounder Emma Best says that the hacked data includes not only all of Gab's public posts and profiles—with the exception of any photos or videos uploaded to the site—but also private group and private individual account posts and messages, as well as user passwords and group passwords. "It contains pretty much everything on Gab, including user data and private posts, everything someone needs to run a nearly complete analysis on Gab users and content," Best wrote in a text message interview with WIRED. "It's another gold mine of research for people looking at militias, neo-Nazis, the far right, QAnon and everything surrounding January 6."

DDoSecrets says it's not publicly releasing the data due to its sensitivity and the vast amounts of private information it contains. Instead the group says it will selectively share it with journalists, social scientists, and researchers. WIRED viewed a sample of the data, and it does appear to contain Gab users' individual and group profiles—their descriptions and privacy settings—public and private posts, and passwords. Gab CEO Andrew Torba acknowledged the breach in a brief statement Sunday.

Gab Hacked Again – Group Apparently Linked to Angry Trans Activist and DDoSecrets

Gab was hacked last week by a group of far-left activists led by trans activist Emma Best. The group DDoSecrets claimed that the hack attack was to help journalists – which makes no sense. The hacker group, DDoSecrets, added that they are making “70GB of passwords, private posts, and more available to researchers, journalists, and social scientists.”

DDoSecrets cofounder Emma Best, a trans far-left activist who previously leaked WikiLeaks group chats in defense of Hillary Clinton, told leftist rag Wired that the data “contains pretty much everything on Gab, including user data and private posts, everything someone needs to run a nearly complete analysis on Gab users and content.” “It’s another gold mine of research for people looking at militias, neo-Nazis, the far right, QAnon and everything surrounding January 6,” Best claims. Though Best is an anti-WikiLeaks nut job, the website for their hacked material is a complete ripoff of Julian Assange’s creation. The unoriginal criminals even called it “GabLeaks.”

Gab founder Andrew Torba did not hold back in a post about the hackers, charging that they were attacked by “mentally ill tranny demon hackers.”

On Monday afternoon Gab was hacked again. The hacker appears to be linked to the Emma Best. The message uploaded on Gab reads,

“The website has been fully compromised last week. 35M public posts and 3M private posts. 50K emails and 7K passwords. 831 verification documents (that I did not send to DDoSecrets or anyone else).

The attacker who stole data from Gab harvested OAuth2 bearer tokens during their initial attack. Though their ability to harvest new tokens was patched, we did not clear all tokens related to the original attack. By reusing these old tokens, the attacker was able to post 177 statuses in an 8-minute period today. We have not independently verified the information that the hacker posted is authentic.

Gab immediately took the site offline, suspecting this was a new attack. We have been able to confirm it was not a new attack, have cleared all compromised tokens, and are requiring users to log in again. As this is not a new attack and no new data has been compromised, there is no need to change your password or take any other action.

We apologize for the inconvenience, and are very confident this will not happen again.

GAB emailed they pushed out a big update. Have a soft puppet account there but it's mostly dead-enders, racists and trolls in their community. It will be interesting when DL2XIT's stye comes out, it'll be GAB, GETTR, TRUTH LIES, and Telegram. Let the deathmatch begin!

We spent last week optimizing our existing hardware to prepare for a big expansion and introduction of new hardware that we purchased at the end of last year. These optimizations resulted in Gab’s speed and performance doubling.

With Gab Feeds you create your own custom feed that others can subscribe to. Feeds can either be private and only viewed by you or Public and subscribed to and viewed by anyone. Our vision for this feature is to take it to the next level by allowing you to “create your own Feed algorithm.”

You’ll be able to add users, groups, hashtags, and more plus decide how it is filtered and presented. This has never been done before and for the first time social media users will be able to fully create and shape their own feed algorithm and then share it with others as well. Stay tuned for more development on this exciting new feature.

GAB got a letter from the Jan 6 Committee:

Gab Received A Letter From Congress Today
AUGUST 19, 2022

Today Gab received the letter below from Congress. We weren’t going to publicize it, but given that the Committee went to the press before we did there’s no point pretending that we didn’t get it.

We are considering our response to the House Oversight Committee.

For the rest of you, know that we cooperate with law enforcement regularly on public safety matters and we never comment on non-public communications with law enforcement, even when it would be convenient to do so for public relations purposes, such as today or in any response to Congress we may choose to send at a later date.

We will add one thing for the public and the media to chew on in the meantime, given that the relevant case is now public. The House’s letter makes reference to a Gab user who posted threats against law enforcement on our platform. The implication of the letter is that we are somehow complicit in those threats. The posts in question were made on or about August 11th and an arrest was made on August 15th.

In that case, as the now-public affidavit supporting the arrest warrant states, we received an emergency data request for the subject through our law enforcement disclosure portal at 6:10 PM on August 11th. We responded at 6:10 (i.e., within one minute) to inform the FBI the issue was being actioned. Responsive records were provided to the FBI by 8:20 PM, or 130 minutes later.

We know for a fact that this is orders of magnitude faster responding to law enforcement than companies like Twitter and Facebook, on whose platforms far more threats against law enforcement – and far more hate, pornography, and other unpleasantness – can be found. Just yesterday for example a man was arrested and found with “buckets of human organs and skin” which he purchased on Facebook.

We don’t scream about how seriously we take public safety. We don’t publicize it. We don’t use it to make political statements. We just do the work, try to be as responsible a corporate citizen as we can, and provide all lawful assistance to law enforcement as efficiently as we can given that Gab is a small business with limited resources. We like to think we do a good job at this.

We would recommend that the members of the Committee call up their friends over at the DOJ to verify our bona fides. In the meantime, as we consider our formal response, for all the commentators out there who have been calling for Gab to be shut down for years on end, just because you don’t know about the public safety work we do doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.
