UK
NHS still not recognising British citizens’ overseas Covid jabs, says peer
Lord Paddick accuses government of ‘broken promises’ after Pfizer jabs received in Norway go unrecognised

Robyn Vinter
Sun 8 Aug 2021 14.13 BST

Britons vaccinated abroad are still struggling to get their jabs registered with the NHS, a Lib Dem peer has warned, despite government promises that measures would be in place by the end of last month.

Brian Paddick, a former London mayoral candidate and a member of the House of Lords, said the government was “yet again, promising things that they fail to deliver” after his GP was unable to register vaccinations he had in Norway, where he has been staying.

This means that Lord Paddick, like many British nationals vaccinated abroad, cannot get an NHS Covid pass, which is needed to avoid quarantine when returning from amber-list countries and, from September, may be required to enter some bars and venues.

The former deputy assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan police, who has spent the last three months in Norway where his husband lives, has already had three vaccinations. His first jab, a dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine delivered in the UK, was not recognised in Norway, requiring him to have two Pfizer shots to be considered fully vaccinated there.

He said that if the UK fails to recognise the jabs he received in Norway, he may end up needing a fourth jab in order to have a complete vaccination record in the UK, where he lives and works.

Japan is tired of this shit and is calling people out.

Japan names and shames citizens for breaching Covid quarantine rules
Japan has carried out a threat to publicly shame peoplenot complying with coronavirus border control measures, releasing the names of three people who broke quarantine rules after returning from overseas.

The health ministry said the three Japanese nationals named had clearly acted to avoid contact with authorities after recently returning from abroad.

The announcement late on Monday, the first of its kind, sparked a flurry of speculation among Twitter users about the details of those identified, such as their jobs and locations.

Japan is asking all travellers from overseas, including its own citizens, to self-quarantine for two weeks, during which they are asked to use a location-tracking smartphone app and report on their health condition.

Tokyo’s governor, Yuriko Koike, has noted that people in their 30s or younger accounted for many recent cases and urged them to “share the sense of crisis” and follow basic measures such as mask wearing and avoiding having parties.

Nurse in Germany suspected of replacing Covid vaccines with saline solution
Authorities say about 8,600 people may have been affected

Reuters
Wed 11 Aug 2021 01.12 BST

Authorities in northern Germany have appealed to thousands of people to get another shot of Covid vaccine after a police investigation found that a Red Cross nurse may have injected them with a saline solution.

The nurse is suspected of injecting salt solution into people’s arms instead of genuine doses at a vaccination centre in Friesland – a rural district near the North Sea coast – in the early spring.

“I am totally shocked by this episode,” Sven Ambrosy, a local councillor, said on Facebook as local authorities issued the call on Tuesday to about 8,600 residents who may have been affected.

While saline solution is harmless, most people who got vaccinated in Germany in March and April when the suspected switch took place are elderly and at high risk of catching Covid.

Growing New Zealand Covid cluster linked to Sydney Delta outbreak
Jacinda Ardern warns of more cases as Auckland cluster grows to 10, marking New Zealand’s first local transmissions of Delta variant

Eva Corlett in Wellington, and Tess McClure
Wed 18 Aug 2021 06.47 BST

New Zealand’s coronavirus cluster has grown to 10, with genomic sequencing linking it to the Delta outbreak that began in Sydney, as the country woke up to day one of a snap lockdown stemming from just one case.

The prime minister’s office confirmed three new cases on Wednesday evening.

The Covid-19 response minister, Chris Hipkins, told broadcaster RNZ “we’re seeing more cases coming through, I don’t have details of those cases. But yes, I can confirm that we have further positive test results since the press conference today.”

He expected more cases to emerge overnight.

The country went into a snap level four lockdown – the highest level of restrictions – on Tuesday night, after detecting one case with no obvious links to the border. New Zealand has not had a level four lockdown in more than a year, and the case is the country’s first instance of Delta transmission in the community.

The prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, warned on Wednesday that there would be more cases given the activity of those infected and that a link to the border had yet to be established, adding “there is more to be done to help piece together this puzzle”.

“Our ability to narrow down that this is a case that is linked to New South Wales outbreak, gives us a lot of leads to chase down as quickly as we can,” she said.

The seven community cases are all linked to the 58-year-old man who tested positive on Tuesday. One person is a fully vaccinated nurse at Auckland city hospital and another is a teacher at an Auckland high school.

The director general of health, Ashley Bloomfield, said most of the cases identified were in their 20s.

“They’ve been out and about a lot, and I’m flagging that there will be large numbers of locations of interest. It is very important that everybody keeps an eye on these,” he said.

That includes the Sky City casino on Saturday night and a central Auckland church on Sunday.

New Zealand in nationwide lockdown as link between Delta case and NSW evades authorities
By Emily Clark
Posted 2h ago2 hours ago, updated 2h ago

Health authorities know the outbreak of COVID-19 spreading across New Zealand's North Island is linked to New South Wales, they just don't know how or when it crossed the ditch.

Key points:
Cases of the Delta variant have been climbing in New Zealand this week
One case has a connection to the border, but authorities suspect that is a separate infection, not linked to the outbreak
Genomic sequencing has linked the first case found in Auckland to the outbreak in New South Wales

New Zealand's alert level 4 places the country under some of the strictest lockdown conditions in the world.

Residents are restricted to their local areas, they cannot exercise with anyone outside their household and only essential businesses are allowed to open — no takeaway coffee, no Uber Eats.

All gatherings are cancelled, all public spaces are closed, the public libraries turn off their wi-fi networks.

When asked why such a strict lockdown was necessary for New Zealand, Ms Ardern simply replied by saying: "Australia."

Alert level 4 shut down multiple outbreaks across New Zealand last year.

"It effectively puts the whole country into quarantine and it's highly effective because it stops both known and unknown transmission chains," Dr Kvalsvig said.

Thanks, Dave :bighug: It's good to hear first-hand accounts / news from various countries.

I once asked a friend who is well on the way to being radicalized, in response to her statement that doctors were calling all deaths COVID because they were afraid not to, whether this was true just in the States or the world over. We moved from there to "there are no excess deaths; the gov't is lying" and again I asked if that was just in the US or what.

It's nice to have details at hand, just in case one runs into a half-radicalized acquaintance who brings up the subject.

New Zealand records another 41 Covid cases as it braces for biggest outbreak of pandemic
Cluster has grown to 148 people, with experts saying it could grow to 1,000 and take four to six weeks to stamp out

Eva Corlett in Wellington and Tess McClure in Christchurch
Tue 24 Aug 2021 02.55 BST

New Zealand is bracing for its biggest coronavirus outbreak yet as cases rise, the locations of interest balloon to more than 400 sites, and the number of close contacts swells to more than 15,700 people.

On Tuesday, the country recorded 41 new positive cases, bringing the total number in its outbreak to 148 – the majority of whom are Samoan, and linked to a sub-cluster who assembled at the Assembly of God church in Mangere, Auckland before the lockdown.

A nationwide, level 4 lockdown – the highest setting – has been extended until at least the end of the week, as the country battles to contain the outbreak of the Delta variant.

New Zealand Minister for Covid-19 Response Chris Hipkins made an unfortunate error when he advised people to socially distance when they go outside to “spread their legs”.

Auckland – the country’s largest city, where the majority of cases have been detected – will remain in lockdown until the end of the month.

Of the 41 new cases, 38 are in Auckland, and 3 are in Wellington. Of the total 148 cases, 89 are epidemiologically linked to the Auckland cluster, with the remaining still under investigation, but likely to be linked because they are either household contacts or have been at a location of interest.

Eight people are in hospital with the virus, but no one is in intensive care.

Genome sequencing has linked the cluster to a returnee from Australia. It is not yet known how the virus was transmitted from the traveller, who was in quarantine, to the community, but a walkway and an atrium in the facility is being investigated.

On Tuesday afternoon, the director general of health, Dr Ashley Bloomfield, said dealing with the Delta variant was like dealing with a whole new virus.

“It is, as we know, highly infectious and transmissible, and as we have seen spreads rapidly.”

Denmark to lift all remaining Covid restrictions on 10 September

Health ministry says high level of vaccination means virus ‘no longer a critical threat to society’

Denmark is to lift all its remaining Covid-19 restrictions by 10 September after the health ministry declared the virus “no longer a critical threat to society” because of the country’s high level of vaccination.

“The epidemic is under control, we have record vaccination levels,” the health minister, Magnus Heunicke, said in a statement on Friday. “That is why we can drop the special rules we had to introduce in the fight against Covid-19.”

He warned, however, that even if the country was “in a good place right now”, the epidemic was not over and the government would not hesitate to “act quickly if the pandemic once again threatens the essential functioning of society”.

Denmark is the EU’s third-most vaccinated country, according to Our World in Data, with 71% of the population having received two shots. Malta is on 80% and Portugal 73%. The UK has fully vaccinated 62% of its population.
It's should be noted that its status as critical threat to society is what permitted parliament to impose restrictions via the epidemic law.

It's all a bit moot anyway, as there were only two restrictions (having to present a valid coronapass to enter night clubs was one, I can't recall what the other one was) set to remain on the books after September 10th, and those would have been phased out on October 1st.

European Union governments have agreed to remove the United States from the EU's safe travel list, meaning US visitors and those from five other countries are likely to face tighter controls, such as COVID-19 tests and quarantines.

Key points:
The list is not binding on individual EU nations; they are free to decide their own border policy

The EU's safe list includes Australia, New Zealand, Japan and 14 other countries

The list is decided based on the COVID situation in a country and the principle of reciprocity

Why cloth masks are on some airlines’ no-fly lists
By Hannah Sampson4:35 p.m.

Air travelers need to do more than just remember to bring a mask — they need to bring the right kind.

A handful of airlines, mostly in Europe, have banned cloth face coverings in favor of higher-standard versions, including surgical masks or respirators. Last month, Finnair joined a list that includes Air France, Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines and Croatia Airlines.

“The health and safety of our customers and crew is our first priority, and fabric masks are slightly less efficient at protecting people from infection than surgical masks,” Finnair spokeswoman Heidi Lemmetyinen said in an email. The airline allows surgical masks and filtering respirators such as FFP2 or FFP3, as well as others that are equivalent to the N95 standard.

New Zealand eases Covid restrictions outside its largest city.

New Zealand announced on Monday that it will ease Covid-19 restrictions outside its largest city, Auckland, ending a series of lockdowns that began in August.

Residents outside Auckland will be allowed to return to work and school, and the nationwide alert level will be lowered to Level 2 starting Wednesday morning, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said at a news conference. Auckland, a city of almost 1.7 million, will remain at Level 4, which means that everyone but essential workers must remain at home. Schools will reopen on Thursday morning, she said.

New Zealand is one of the last countries pursuing a so-called Covid zero strategy, enforcing severe restrictions on movement and activities until there are no new cases.

As of 10 hours and change ago, the last remainings restrictions introduced in Denmark 548 days ago were removed, marking the return to pre-Covid normalcy.

Or rather, "normalcy". There are still markers on the floor in supermarkets, ensuring the customers can maintain distancing if they wish, just as there are hand disenfectant dispensers at the entrances and around the stores (depending on size), as well as one-time use gloves for use in the fresh produce and bakery sections.

4,427,139 Danes (86%) have had their first jab, 4,276,594 (83%) their second, and a third booster jab is now being rolled out for those deemed clinically vulnberable.

Cases double in new south-east China Covid outbreak linked to school
National Health Commission reports 59 new infections in Fujian, up from 22 cases the day before

Guardian staff and agencies
Tue 14 Sep 2021 04.04 BST

New local Covid infections have more than doubled in China’s southeastern province of Fujian, which is battling a coronavirus outbreak that has sparked concerns over infections among unvaccinated schoolchildren.

Putian, a city of 3.2 million, ordered testing of all residents on Tuesday after Delta variant cases linked to a returnee from Singapore ballooned into a province-wide outbreak of more than 100 people.

The National Health Commission said on Tuesday that 59 new locally transmitted cases were reported for 13 September, up from 22 infections a day earlier.

In just four days, a total of 102 community infections have been reported in the province, which is bordered by Zhejiang to the north and Guangdong to the south.

Authorities said the cluster’s suspected patient zero was a man who had recently returned from Singapore and developed symptoms after completing a 14-day quarantine and initially testing negative for the virus.

The man’s 12-year-old son and a classmate were among the first patients detected in the cluster last week, shortly after the new school term began.

The variant then raced through classrooms, infecting more than 36 children including 8 kindergartners, city authorities said on Tuesday, in the first major school-linked spread the country has seen since the start of the pandemic.

Canada: Alberta healthcare system on verge of collapse as Covid cases and anti-vax sentiments rise
A province that has long boasted of its loose coronavirus restrictions has also been the site of North America’s highest caseloads

Leyland Cecco in Toronto
Wed 15 Sep 2021 11.30 BST

A surge in coronavirus cases has pushed the healthcare system in the Canadian province of Alberta to the verge of collapse, as healthcare workers struggle against mounting exhaustion and a growing anti-vaccine movement in the region.

The province warned this week that its ICU capacity was strained, with more people requiring intensive care than any other point during the pandemic – nearly all of them unvaccinated.

“It’s not easy to go to work every day and watch people in their 30s die,” an ICU nurse in Edmonton told the Guardian. “Having to help a family say goodbye and then going through the actions that are required at the end of someone’s life, is worse than anyone can imagine.”

Alberta has long boasted of its loose coronavirus restrictions – including advertising the previous months as the “best summer ever” as it rolled back those few restrictions. It has also been the site of North America’s highest caseloads.

Supporters of a church that was charged with refusing to follow Covid guidelines at a protest near Edmonton in April. Alberta’s case rate is double the country’s average.

In a province with a long history of skepticism towards government, the pandemic has become fertile ground for protests and anti-vaccine rhetoric, including from elected officials, firefighters and police officers. During the ongoing federal election, the People’s Party of Canada, a fringe rightwing party that has come out against public health measures has seen its largest support base in rural Alberta.

That skepticism towards masks and vaccines has come at a steep cost, say frontline workers.

The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, has said dozens of people in his inner circle at the Kremlin have tested positive for coronavirus, which has affected more than 7 million people in the badly-hit country.

Earlier this week, the 68-year-old Putin said he was self-isolating after announcing an outbreak among members of his entourage.

“Cases of the coronavirus were detected in my inner circle. Not just one or two but several dozen people,” Putin said, speaking via video link at a meeting of a Moscow-led security alliance.

Putin had been due to attend the meeting of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) in Tajikistan’s capital, Dushanbe, in person, but instead joined remotely.

Germany is ending salary subsidies for unvaccinated workers who are quarantined.

Christopher F. Schuetze
By Christopher F. Schuetze
Sept. 22, 2021

In a move that may help boost the country’s flagging vaccination campaign, German health authorities announced on Wednesday that the country’s state governments will no longer pay for unvaccinated people to quarantine, ending subsidies that employers can draw on to cover salaries when workers have to stay home.

The policy is directed at people who are forced to quarantine after having contact with an infected person or after returning to Germany from a designated high-risk country. People in those situations who are not vaccinated will no longer be eligible for the subsidies.

Jens Spahn, the country’s health minister, noted that vaccination remains entirely voluntary in Germany, but “with this decision also comes the responsibility to bear financial consequences.”

The announcement that the subsidies would be cut off by Nov. 1 follows news that a widely publicized national vaccine drive had failed to yield a significant increase in vaccinations.

Currently, 67 percent of Germany’s population has received at least one dose of coronavirus vaccine. The most recent surge in virus cases in the country peaked earlier this month, but appeared to be on the decline in recent weeks.

The new policy is not the first action taken by the German government to discourage people from remaining unvaccinated. Officials announced last month that Germany would end a program that allows any German resident to get a free antigen test. Unvaccinated people are required to show a recent negative test result to enter businesses like indoor restaurants, gyms and hair salons; starting Oct. 12, they will have to pay for the tests themselves.

For the past two days, the entire nation of Samoa has been locked down, with strips of red fabric flying in front of many homes.

Key points:

Authorities hope 99 per cent of Samoa's eligible population will be vaccinated after the lockdown
Workers went door-to-door to administer the first dose of AstraZeneca
In 2019, Samoa embarked on a similar campaign during a deadly measles outbreak
Businesses have closed and people have been urged to stay at home.

But the Pacific nation has not recorded a single case of COVID-19.

This lockdown is for health authorities to administer door-to-door vaccines as part of a mass vaccination drive.
